What Does This Team Consistently Do Well?

This is an honest question. I really don’t know what we do so consistently well that you can say, ‘Well, if so and so isn’t playing well or the team isn’t doing this or that, well at least we’ve got whatever to help us out.

Does anyone know what we consistently do well?

No you are correct. We are very inconsistent on anything. We are hard to guard against or scout because we aren’t so sure what we are trying to do.

Honestly I think we're pretty efficient offensively. But the epically bad D overshadows it.

I think the defense will turn back around. It had been pretty good for a few games until the second half against Tennessee. It probably won't become elite, but it can be top ten in efficiency.

This team does 1 thing really well: drive some of our fans nuts.
I think a couple players are struggling (Richards and Knox), but we have a couple of players that are playing incredibly basketball in SGA and Washington.
Keep in mind, PJ was getting trashed on here just 2 weeks ago, now we wouldn't want to ever play without him.
Give KK and Richards time, they'll get there.

All of those dudes need to attack the basket at every opportunity, but also learn how to kick the ball out when bottled up.

I see too much hesitation (not all the time, but enough to be a problem) from each of them to drive...and then, when they do, too much forcing the ball up even though they haven't gotten a clean look.

On the defensive end, I really don't know. It's 3 seasons in a row now that we've been dominated inside (and letting guys get to the rim). Cal values speed/length over big bodies...sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse.

Heart. They don’t quit. Even the games they lost, they scrapped until the very end.

Think about the 2011 squad. They did not win a single conference road game until the very last one. It took them much longer to learn how to fight then it has this team, even though they might have had stronger talent.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand being frustrated with this team. I also understand people who say they won’t make it out of the first weekend of the tournament. They very well may not. But if this group of freshman has learned to fight this hard this early in the season, I would not be surprised if they were able to fight their way to a much better finish.

I agree if we can have Diallo or SGA be like Lamb and Knight and know they can get 25 if we need it they feel similar. They seem to play hard and are never really out of it. I hope Vanderbilt does play and gives us one more dude that has five fouls and can do everything, get everyone healthy and see what we can do.

We win alot . We play great Zone D , We have guards who can really handle and shoot and pass. We can really rebound .

I and a lot of people have been saying since before the season to look to 2014 when judging this team. Remember how inconsistent they were? How a player would have some great games and we thought they'd found their game, then would suck for a few games? I remember just thinking "if we could only ever get all of these guys playing well at the same time, we'd be a hell of a team." By March I wasn't really expecting it to happen, but then it did.

Inconsistency is to be expected when you're as young and inexperienced as we are. But almost every year, by tournament time our freshmen are playing better and more consistently than we've seen through the year. When almost ALL your players are freshmen, the whole team is going to be up and down in a big way. I still see us as a dangerous team in March. And for all the crap Cal gets, his teams have performed very, very well in the tournament even if they struggle through conference.

Over the last decade we are a program that has been spoiled with not-so-typical freshmen. Every year we seem to have at least one 17-18 year old who plays well above their age and level of experience. The toughest thing for a young player with little to no experience is maintaining a level of consistency every game. This team is showing us that while we have some talented freshmen, there just isn't a player on that level. Wall, Knight, MKG, Davis, Randle, Towns, and Fox are guys that we depended on to play more like a three year player than a first year guy. And they met that challenge. It's rare to ever have that kind of freshmen and we've had quite a few. This year we don't have one so each game will be a bit of a surprise. Shai has shown that he has the potential to be the Mr. Dependable that we currently lack. It's a long season and we're 13-3. Looking at our roster and the schedule so far, I'm pretty happy with that.
