Could Kentucky still win it all without Vanderbilt?

UK took a beating in the press over Kanter. Memphis lost a final four banner over a player. Wonder why Cal is risk averse to someone with sketchy academics? Maybe because KY and Cal are being watched intensely by the NCAA unlike two certain schools on tobacco road that can do pretty much whatever they like...

I don’t think you understand what I am saying. I am saying that Cal would much rather have Bagley be ineligible and attend UK (and hence not play this year) than to be eligible but at a different school. That is, Cal would much rather not have to play against Bagley.

Anything can happen come March. I think we will have a shot at a NC if Cal does his magic like he always does. If all the kids buy in then I think you will see a team that can win it. Teams that win a NC has to have some luck along the way. It will all be determined by how we are playing in March and if we can get some of that luck going our way. I never count our team out as long as we have Cal leading them.

Hahah cal already said he was afraid of playing the big boys in the pk80. While duke has already played Michigan state Florida Texas and Indiana. U guys play no one. U thought UCLA would still be good even though they lost Lonzo?
We played Kansas. You played MSU and Florida. Don’t know why the hell you mentioned Texas and Indiana, as if they would ever be ranked. [roll]

Also, considering UCLA and UL were preseason Top 25, it was fathomable that they would still be ranked when we play them. Not to mention the road game against WVU.

And the rest of Duke’s OOC schedule is a cakewalk. So you can still argue that when all is said and done, Kentucky’s OOC will be stronger.

Sure they can. Vanderbilt will help, of course, but some fans need to calm down about him.

Can? Yes. Will? Odds are against it.

Teams worse than us have won it due to seeding, teams better than them getting beat, hot games, etc etc etc. Look at our team with Terrence Jones and Brandon Knight. That team over achieved like nobodies business. I say expect the worst, hope for the best. This team is Sweet 16 caliber as of now from what I've seen, anything more than that is gravy going into next year which should be a Final 4 team.

Color me negative, but I don't think Cal will ever win another title here.

I think it will be very difficult now that Duke has changed recruiting strategy and taking all the OAD's they can get...4 years ago we would sign a class like Zion/Reddish/Barrett...now it's all fragmented. Even Mich State taking guys like Bridges. That, coupled with UNC being cleared of sanctions, means us getting super teams is unlikely.

No. UK lost to KU when KU had off shooting night.

Granted that UK’s defenders had a lot to with that, but uk is not as strong as in years past.

This is just not a great UK team.

Cal will coach them up, he is a good coach, but they are sweet sixteen and out.
Kentucky is shooting 38% from 3 this season. They shot 23% against Kansas. They had a worse shooting night than Kansas did.

You’re really judging an entire season on the 3rd game that the youngest team in NCAA history played together?

Obviously the odds are against Kentucky winning it all. Duke is the clear #1 team and the odds are against THEM winning it all. But this far in, I’d say we’re a legitimate top 10ish team with room to grow and improve. Lord, if the 2014 team can make the final four, this team can absolutely do it. Realistically, I’d say the odds are 30-1 for a championship and 8-1 for a final four. That being said, in my heart, I always believe we WILL win the championship until we don’t.

We also turned the ball over in that game 1 in 4 possessions. And KU ONLY beat us by 4 points.

I mean it works both ways there.

In a rematch would KU likely shoot better? Yeah.
Would we not turn the ball over nearly as much? Yeah

BTW some of that poor shooting had to do with our length. Outside of UK, Kansas hasn't really played anyone of note. So it's even in a rematch, they prob don't shoot anywhere they have been shooting in those other games.

Can they? Absolutely. There are a handful of teams that "can" win it this year, and I would put UK in that handful. Will they? I wouldn't bet on it, just like I wouldn't bet on Duke/MSU to win it either if you play the percentages. We know damn well the best team or most talented team rarely wins it.

Lol u all must be smokin something. This is the worst Kentucky team since cal has been there. So bad cal wouldn’t even play in the pk80 but u think u can win it all.
We are better than the NIT team. But you're not far off. We will be much better in March, but no way we win it all. Just being honest. You can USUALLY tell when we have the best team. 2012 I had ZERO doubt from start to finish that was our year! 2015 scared me I wasn't sure because 38-0 was weighing heavy on our players....by the Notre Dame game, we started playing timid. This year is not even as good as our 2ND round exit team two years ago. I'd say this is his second worst team he has had here. But I'm not saying we won't make some noise, I just don't see us winning it all.

Cal doesn't care. He has to worry about his team not worry about the eligibility of a player who decided to go to the only school that could get him eligible.

The problem will be Duke, and maybe Florida.. I think those two teams will be tough outs for us.

But there's no reason Kentucky can't be a top3 team as soon as January. I don't trust MSU, or anyone else for that matter. UNC is weak, ND got smoked, WSU is beatable.

Get back to me when u play someobody better than Utah valley state or the other garbage non conference schedule u all have. U all might not beat one top 25 team in the non con. That’s sad.
Wow ur so pathetic as a troll ur not worth the effort. Comments so obviously fake ur either a really bad troll or the lowest iq basketball fan with a reading comprehension problem I have ever seen. Admit it's Uks far from even practiced defense that caused Kansas to shoot bad then say worst Cal team ever lol it's just to pathetic

Yep, you're a moron. You think we scheduled the UCLA game after Lonzo Ball left instead of a few years ago before he even committed?

Yes, but to say that he stopped recruiting him because he didn’t think he would be granted eligiblity at UK is foolish. That is what I am pointing out.

The SEC road games will absolutely beat down this young team.
Getting to the Elite Eight will be a stretch.
No one hates Duke more than I do but it looks like Duke will rule until coach K retires.

It's possible they could win it this year. I'm not saying they are the odds on favorite, but stranger things have happened in the tournament. As far as anyone thinking Duke has it locked up because of Bagley who is to say he doesn't brake an ankle in his next game. Not wishing injury on any player, but it's a long season and players get injured all the time. As Kentucky fans we've had a lot of bad fortune with injuries over the years. That being said Duke can be had with Bagley. Takes more than one player and a lot of luck to win 6 in a row in March. Had Anderson not got hurt we three peat 96-98.

Actually it is not foolish at all because you do not know the reasons. Neither do I but I did give you several reasons why he wouldn't recruit him due to eligibility issues. You see Kentucky has to be concerned about the rules and the media. The NCAA and ESPN do not carry UK's water or lick Cal's boots like they do for Duke and K.

I doubted it in 2014 but look what happened. Side from the youth this team hasn’t all the components of a champion.

I'll never understand the people that say this. Exactly what are the components of a champion?? And with over 3 months of basketball to be played, how do you know we don't have them. The short answer, and the only logical answer is yes, because there is nothing at this point to definitely keep us from it. The odds are heavily against it, but let's take a step back for a second. Last year when everybody was proclaiming Duke's dominance because of how much better they would be once everybody got healthy, there was a serious flaw in their logic. In order for the guys out with injury to play, they were going to have to sit another good player, and the gap wasn't that huge. Despite what people think, the gap between these top players isn't that big, with rare exceptions, Bagley being one of them. The tournament is generally more about match ups than anything else anyway, so without knowing the matchups, it's hard to even guess how far we can go. Also, in some of these games, it's all about having a player get hot, and then a single player can carry a team, even if that player wasn't a top 10 player. What happens if Knox hits a hot streak where he is just unguardable? What happens if SGA and Diallo become lock down defenders, and Richards becomes a double double guy while adding 2-3 blocks per game?? In the end, they could, but it's impossible to even put odds on it right now.

Ok, so tell me again how UK would be hurt by having Bagley sign and then be declared ineligible. And, tell me again how it would be better for UK to face a Duke team that has Bagley instead of Bagley sitting on the UK bench, ineligible, when playing Duke.

So your advice to Cal would be to spend his precious recruiting time going after players who will never play to keep Duke from getting them.

That is some "strategery" right there. The basic goal as a coach is to get players who will be able to play.

Since Duke seems to have no concerns about a player receiving impermissible benefits before going to Duke or going to a real high school before going to Duke they can recruit anyone without concern. That is a new concept the rest of college basketball will need to adjust to. I expect Shaq to show up with some kind of awful disguise and fake name and suit up for Duke next year based on the new Duke recruiting model.

Are you saying that UK can't win the NC because we lost a close, competitive November game to Kansas? Or because we didn't look like a NC team in November? That doesn't make sense. Have you learned anything since Calipari got here? We start 5 freshmen. I am seeing real progress now. Nick Richards is turning out to be a game altering baseline defender, and Knox and Washington improve every game. This team will go as far as our guards take us. Every team has imperfections. Camp Cal will make a difference, as it does every year. By March, we are good enough to beat anyone if we value the basketball and cut down on turnovers. Vanderbilt's absence is unfortunate. But this team never had Vanderbilt on the floor in the 1st place, so they won't miss him.
