Guess he did what was right for him, but he played 10 minutes a game as a freshman here and had to sit out last season.
Gotta believe he'd have been our 3 last year and who knows how the roster shakes out as far as recruiting SGA or Diallo if we know we have him back. Just hard to project hypotheticals like that.
What's clear is he can play and Cal knew he could play which is why he brought him here. From there, the kid wanted something different. Can't blame him. Can't blame Cal. Just happens sometimes.

Came to UK because he thought he had one and done talent. He didn't. Didn't wanna wait and develop so he quit and transferred and is playing pretty damn well as a red shirt sophomore.
Matthews could not shoot as a FR. Briscoe was the better player 2 yr ago, no reason to think he wouldn’t have stayed better last year.
Whenever a player transfers from UK some fans here build him up like we lost Lebron James.

Charles Mathews is shooting 28.6% from three, and free throws at 56.3%. People are like HE CAN SHOOT.
Isaiah Briscoe shoots 28.8% from three as a sophomore (more than doubling his percentage from freshman year) and FT at 63.5%. HE CAN"T SHOOT. He'll NEVER be able to shoot.

Hell, did you know Briscoe at one time in the season was shooting 40%.
Besides, i am comparing to a 2nd year player and third year player. People attack briscoe so much here. Even so he showed huge progress. Cal said "your goal is to shoot 25% this year. " He achieved that. I believe he could be in steady 33 - 35% shooter this year had he stayed. But what's the point, Many UK fans would bash him.

We needed a long, hard nosed defender for wing scorers last year. Was supposed to be him. Wouldve been the perfect fit.

Because he's a transfer so it wasn't technically a redshirt year. When his eligibility is up then they'll grant him the extra year if he needs or wants it, I believe is how that all works.
They may also just have him listed by his academic standing.
He was on one of the many teams you predict to go 40-0 ofcourse you know who he is.

Was 9-9 from the field when I dropped in last night , after scoring 20 plus on LSU .. Looks better than Briscoe to me . Briscoe didn't go 9-9 in his career here . And we played cupcakes too . Thats when he kicked butt and inflated his stats . But people wouldn't accept that truth . And to suggest Mathews isn't a far far better shooter than IB. .. nonsense. Mathews looks like he would be the second best player on our current team right now .
But its a meaningless message board thing He's with Michigan now , my only hope is drops 40 against Tosu. I sure do wish he would have stayed with us .
The same reason Derek Willis and Dom never redshirted, we don't do that here. Plus people around here believe you can't improve after your freshman season and you are who you are at that point.
Doesn't Gonzaga redshirt freshmen who aren't ready to contribute rather than play them meaningless minutes in garbage time?
I guess when he thought he was one and done, and wasn't, he thought Cal would continue to bring in that kind of talent and he would be recruited over, and forgotten on the bench. He would have been a nice addition last year, and this one.
Good for him. I knew he would eventually ball out. You could see the talent during his Freshman year. I said when he transferred that him leaving was my least favorite transfer since Rhodes.
Agree 100%. Would've loved to have had him on last year's team. I hated seeing him transfer because he's playing exactly the way I envisioned him developing for us after a couple of years' seasoning.
Exactly. Not everyone is Brandon Knight as a freshman. But sometimes kids get homesick too. Who knows? I respected his decision then, respect it now. Same with Wiltjer.
It's the same thing every year. Every player that has ever transferred from UK was the "missing piece"
The guy is averaging 17.5 points per game on 58 percent shooting (.375 on threes) at Michigan. Sounds like he can shoot to me.
And, btw, Matthews is also putting up excellent rebounding, assist and steal numbers. And he was always a good defender. Appears the kid's developing into quite a baller.
Shame he didn't stay. We surely could've used him last year at that 3 spot--where his only competition would've been Briscoe--and in our backcourt this year.
