I had a sweet gig at the Florence Mall Quizno's from 1996-2000.
As it was being constructed (behind a mysterious wall of food court wonderment), the manager sat out front in a school desk with a pile of applications. As I turned in my application, I got three friends to apply as well.
We were all hired and went through corporate training on how to run a Quizno's - all the while we were just four 14/15 year old ********, dicking around with all the fixin's of a brand new restaurant with no skin in the game, at all.
The part time crew essentially consisted of our friends, and the owner's son and his friend. It was like something out of a Saved By the Bell plot but without any Stacey Carosi - just ******* boy teenagers: forgetting about a running mop sink and flooding other restaurants, shooting scalding hot water at each other with a hose, getting high from huffing cleaning solvents during cooler wipe downs, reprogramming the registers to print jokes about our boss/owner on every receipt, "TED IS A 'REAL LIFE' PIMP," (Ted was pissed!) burning oregano in the toaster to screw with mall cops who "smelled pot," stretching the definition of free "cheezy bread" to just eating full subs at the counter, falling asleep on the register until customers woke you up, filling our friends Mello Yello orders with Peppercini juice, THE WORKS.
I also invented a sub based on the Hardee's Frisco burger, and a new size, "The Traybender."
And you bet yer sweet *** we also engaged in the illicit 8:30pm Food Court Phone Tree to see what Auntie Anne's and Baskin Robbins had on the offer.
I also got about $100 dollars worth of Spencer's Gift merchandise through the years - just to be complicit with some other guy - who must had a huge deal with the Spencer's guy: Maroon Velour Inflatable Chair, etc.
For the last two years, I had other jobs off and on, but I always maintained a 4-hour a week schedule and only handed out samples to the Sunday church crowd.
That way, as far as my dad knew, I "had a job," and he didn't get on my *** for doing jackshit all day.
At the end, my paycheck was $17 a week and I would spend $10 on Quizno's after my weekly shift.
