Coaching has nothing to do with spectacular games by Bell and Dorsey.

Yeah, Self's Elite 8 record is atrocious, but Oregon hit some crazy *** 3s and Devonte Graham picked a bad time for his worst game of the season. 0-for-7 from the field and was averaging 20 ppg in the tourney coming into tonight.

This has to be a gut-wrenching loss for them. Mason's a First-Team All-American, Jackson could be the No. 1 pick in the draft and Graham is a dynamite guard, despite the no-show tonight. Plus, playing a hop, skip and jump from campus against a team similarly sized, that basically beat them at their own game.

I guess having players that beat and threaten women can get the basketball Gods on your bad side.

Self should have 0 titles. His team is over seeded annually because of corrupt officials in the big 12. Half his wins in the tournament are against double digit seeds. He is the most over-rated coach in college basketball history.

Two of our scorers didn't show up tonight. That said, I don't understand why Coach put Josh back in during the first half....Josh wasn't rebounding for fear of fouling. I question some of Self's decisions but he is a great coach and I'm glad we have him. Good luck tomorrow against UNC.

I guess when Self gets 4 NCAA titles and ties Rupp he can consider himself equal. Until then, that stat doesn't mean much.

Heard that too. Isn't KU close to either the Army's maximum prison or one of the largest federal pens? Maybe some bad juju flows from whichever prison it is to the students/players/coaches. There is always violence flowing out of that school(or it's flowing in and being enacted).
So it's both: Ft Leavenworth and civilian Leavenworth(although that may be a state institution).

I created a thread on Self, by the numbers, but here are the key points:

Dude lost 6 times to teams seeded 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14.

He has racked up a seemingly impressive 33 tournament wins at KU. But 25 of those came against teams seeded 8-16.

It seems he beats up on a weak Big 12, then beats up on lower seeds, then meets his match against real competition (and often gets ousted by lower seeds).

Wonder how 5* Carlton Bragg felt while getting no playing time when KU played basically only one bigman and 4 guards/wings vs. Oregon.

Self made no move to develop Bragg's role and was happy to go small ball all year long.

I think it has a lot to do with the protection they get in the Big 12 by the officials. They just expect to get runs handed to them magically like they do in conference

Cal has already proven himself as twice the coach Self is (still true after factoring in talent, which Self has plenty of).

Since he's been at a big boy school, Cal is at or near the top in a zillion statistics - regular season game wins, tourney wins, Final Fours, winning percentage, etc..

And the one mitigating factor that Kansas fans try to use when comparing Self to Cal (strength of the Big 12) gets flattened every year in the tourney. Sure, the tournament has randomness to it, but over a long span, you start to see clear patterns.

The whole conference outside of Kansas has been getting like 2 Final Fours per decade lately. So when we see the teams beating up on each other and Kansas running away with the title every single season, and we question if that's really so different from Kentucky's situation - it seems that we're justified. The metrics like the Big 12 better, but in the science world, we hastily abandon models without predictive power - if they're really gonna keep calling the B12 the best conference in the game every other season, it's worth doing the same thing here.

I don't think people say that. He is stubborn, and will win, or go down in flames his way, but nobody said he cannot coach at all. People criticize cal for having the best talent year in, year out and in 30 years only having 1 title to show for it. That's where people give him a hard time on his X's and o's. I personally wish he coached here long enough to pass UCLA in titles.

I have seen people on this board, this season say Cal cannot coach. Great recruiter but cannot coach. I kid you not!
