It's big.

It's also soft.

And becoming less and less rather than more and more, imo. For overhyped.

It's a fantastic rivalry and well-deserved... I just think the media over-commercialized it and it's lost some luster.

So in other words.. I agree with OP.

Cheaters vs Kicky Boy. Difficult to imagine a successful outcome to that contest.

I lived in France and Belgium for 2 years. Not exactly 3rd world countries. And there wasn't one person who really knew much about college basketball. The NBA registered a little with them. This was right before Nowiztki and the influx of euro players so it might be a bit bigger now. But not college ball.

Other than the states of KY, NC, IN, and KS, no one cares about college basketball.

I lived in Germany for 6 months and the germans I associated would go on and on about the historical Duke vs UNC games of the past and hopes for many many more wunderbar games in the future. Spent 3 months in the Philippines and most conversations revolved around pancit, shabu, Duterte killing people and the Duke vs UNC rivalry.

I wonder if the game is beamed into outer space so all the extra terrestrials can watch it to !! Hell they may think Rat Face is one of their own !!!

There is no doubt this is the biggest rivalry in all of college sports. Both teams are ALWAYS ranked, most times both are in the top 10, and look how many Final Fours both these programs have gone too in the last 30 years!!! And no doubt it holds a national audience based upon ESPN's TV ratings for the game.

UK/Louisville is a great rivalry now but how many years and decades did they not even play each other??

Coach Cal would never make a grandeur proclamation like this.

By the way, we are the needle.

Not speaking in relation to the Duke/UNC rivalry but have to say I have been very few places across this great land that I haven't ran into UK fans. On the other hand I don't see that many Duke or UNC shirts and hats. Maybe they just don't proclaim their love for their program like UK fans.

We can make fun, or perhaps some just can't stand the idea of these two programs getting the major attention, but if you are a fan of college basketball, it is one of the best rivalries. I think if ESPN promoted the Kentucky/UL rivalry better it would be up there. However, this game holds more significance because it impacts the ACC standings.

For us old timers, Kentucky/Tenn used to be very similar or perhaps even more before the advent of cable, ESPN, etc. But, when the Tenn team would come running onto the Memorial Gym court spinning Orange Basketballs on their finger tips and Ray Mears would be wearing his bright Orange coat, it set the tone for the hatred of the two rivals. It was way better than UNC/Duke and at that time Tenn also had some great teams.

Wait...so you're telling me he has an inflated sense of self-importance?...Nah I just can't wrap my mind around that.
Can anyone find a coach at a top school that does not have an inflated sense of self-importance. I certainly cannot.

The national media certainly hypes this game more than any other. I will give him that. So in the eyes of college basketball fans he is right. UL - UK is huge with UK-UL fans. I certainly view it as the BIG ONE. But not so the average fan Some of it might be due to ESPN and other sports outlet hyping it as they do. UK - UL does not get the hype compared to Duke - UNC.

The Duke and UNC rivalry is so big because of marketing. ESPN has made it what it is. They (ESPN) could make UKvsUL the same level with enough hype.

No they couldn't, because Louisville is much more of a regional team with zero following outside of basically one city in one state, and which gets repeatedly owned. Badly.

I really, really hope Gracie trips someone bigtime and the benches clear. I want to see that slap fight.
The game used to have the potential to draw blood(Hansbrough vs Henderson)Maybe Allen gets to feeling his oats a little tonight and Roy pours a co-colar on him to cool him off if he tries to walk thru a UNC huddle.

Not likely. The NCAA Men's Finals are the 4th most watched sporting event in the U.S., behind only the BCS Championship, the Olympics and the Super Bowl, and ahead of the NBA finals, the Kentucky Derby, the Daytona 500, the Masters, the World Cup and the World Series.

UNC's Eric Montross bled a lot against Duke's Christian Laettner. Duke's Greg Koubek left a lot of blood on the Chapel Hill floor in 1990.
