Just wanted to say something positive in the wake of a loss for once.

I think what Cal does goes well beyond just wins and losses.

The remarkable talent of the players he's brought into the program is only exceeded by their character.

Cal himself has been nothing but exemplary as a face of the program, the university and the state. He's had the team involved in numerous charity events and he's raised and donated extremely generous amounts to multiple charities during his tenure.

Now I understand the bottom line is he's paid to win games, and no he's not perfect as a coach, but I think he's more than exceeded expectations in that category as well. To the point that when coupled with the things mentioned above it would be nice if Mitch just came out made it known Cal can leave when he's ready and no sooner.

I also think the response to this from the fanbase would be overwhelmingly positive and show once and for all the that the people voicing displeasure with his overall performance during his time here actually represent an insignificantly small percentage of UK fans.

The loss to Wisconsin in the 2015 FF stings even worse now. Honestly, that was Cal's moment. If UK goes 40-0, he's unassailable. And it was so close (at least having the chance for it). I worried then that it was like being a 100 feet from the summit of Mt. Everest and having to turn back, and I worry even more about it now.

Bob Knight went 32-0 in 75-76. IU was 16-11 the next year, missing the NCAA's, and missed the NCAA's again in 78-79. People barely even noticed. Different times, but still- if UK wins out in 2015, this is all a silly blip that no one takes all that seriously.

Still plenty of time left to turn this year around, but Cal as historical coaching great is losing momentum. I actually think he might need this kind of setback to reinvigorate him. Guys like Cal have so much ego that not being the clear best burns their asses. Lifetime contract is a bad idea for anyone, but I still don't see anyone else I'd rather have coaching UK any time soon.

The issue with Cal is not Cal losing interest (I have seen that in a lot of posts lately) nor with his not coaching X's and O's (he can, far better than most all top coaches). IMO, the issue is that UK has gained the reputation for being the place to go get ready for the NBA and be seen by their scouts daily. Some kids also fall in love with the program when they get to Lexington (when that happens you get Ulis), but most that PLAN to fall in love with college ball go someplace else. UK still gets the most talented, but not always those that fall in love with the college game. If a group happens to have several players that fall in love with the college game you get KAT and Ulis, if not, you get Monk and Fox.

Cal does not have a lifetime contract. Kentucky doesn't offer lifetime contracts to anyone. But I get the nature of the OP. I would say however most people forget, Coach K was on a warm seat in 2009. It wasn't public but there were rumblings across the Duke fan base that he'd lost his ability to recruit and compete. Half of them wanted a change if it didn't turn around quickly.

Kentucky isn't so different from other top programs and organizations. Unless you've won recent championships it's always a bit tougher to sell yourself long term, but Cal has done a really good job and he deserves whatever time he wants to turn it around. I usually argue from the position of legacy rather than job security, and Most people misunderstand it.

I just think if Mitch were to come out and publicly make it official that would be a good move. My theory is that if the possibility of Cal being removed for wins and losses was completely off the table(and I agree with you it's not actually a possibility anyways) then some of the few fans that actually think it is possible to begin with would probably focus less on the idea of replacing Cal as a solution to what they perceive as falling short of the programs lofty standards and instead focus on how the team can improve under Cal.

I think its okay to be critical of a man making that much money to do a job. I just think any talk of even the idea of getting rid of an active Hall of Fame coach is really destructive.

His players stay out of trouble, go to class, and Cal understands the enormity of the program. The biggest problem is Cal, himself has set a pretty high bar, and we, as fans, have gotten spoiled.
