Cal ruined this team.

Back in November and December we looked like the best team in the country. The guys were having a blast on the court. Now we look like an NIT team full of miserable players who spend most of the game arguing with the refs and each other.

I don't know what Cal did to them but i wish he had left them alone.

Early season games are all about who has the better athletes the players haven't been together very long and just learning the system and integrating new players....games in conference are about coaching and who has there players running their offensive and defensive systems the best.

Like jedwar said, Cal started to force the ball down to Bam rather than playing to our guards strengths. That killed our flow.

That and our players seem like they don't give a crap.
Just came here to post it. Instead of letting guards free flow like they were, and Bam get what comes to him, Cal forced the issue and it disrupted everything.

It seemed to start when Camp Cal and the 3 a day practices began. He messed with their heads it seems like. There is no flow to the offense. It looks as if they're thinking too much.

Suggested the same thing and got bashed.
Not a bright move by Cal brining him in mid season but he had to land another guard desperately for next season.
Yeah diallo sitting on the bench is killing the players on the floor. I'm sure if diallo had never joined we could play defense and have a better offense than "hope monk makes this tough shot"

I don't know, the team with Julius Randle looked bad against Michigan State but came on later.

I like Briscoe and he is tough and good around the rim but sometimes he tries to do to much and keeps making bad decisions. Also he has more rope than anybody on the teams as far as getting jerked out after making some bad plays. Other players notice things like that.

This is my thought as well.

Also think we heard how bad we were defensively and shifted focus to that in practice. Doesn't seem to be working.

Lastly, we play a lot of garbage teams early in the season, when athleticism plays a bigger role, so we're going to look decent in Nov-Dec.

What is really funny is that Cal decided to force feed Bam after he scored 20 points on Tenn 6'5 post player. Bam should only catch alley oops and attempt to rebound and dunk.

I'd be more apt to agree if Diallo was playing and taking minutes. How does a kid who is not even getting/taking minutes negatively impact the team? He can't be anything but an upgrade to go against in practice, so what is the issue?

Or is it the fact that team is just lacking some pieces, plays a small 3 guard lineup with 1 shooter being relied upon to hit, and has a hole at SF, and a PF who has to masquerade as a Center and has limited and robotic post moves? The bench is bad, although I'd give Dom Hawkins some shoes next game instead of the ice skates or whatever the hell he was wearing that forced him to slip/fall on the court all night. Willis is an unmotivated, soft minded guy who is a good front runner. Humphries isn't a UK caliber player. Neither is Wynyard. Briscoe is a Slice recruit and plays like that. Some love that gritty, street ball, pound the ball into the ground and create a shot for myself game. I think UK is better with him scoring 8-10 a game and deferring. I also think they'll be better when he leaves. Others disagree.

Great coaches can have off years and I agree that Cal has done a poor job to this point with this team. They haven't shown a proven leader, yet he's taking trips/time off as if they can be trusted in the hands of a leader. UK isn't paying Cal to have Ulis coach the team or Briscoe. The Ulis coached team had worst results of any NCAA UK team under Cal. This one could surpass that unless he takes over and starts doing his job. That doesn't mean to yell/scream and try to make these guys into past UK greats. It means find a way they can play their best TOGETHER and adjust to coaching them that way--and force them to play that way. Or take people's minutes and stage away from them. But he's had a ****** year imo as a Coach to this point in terms of understanding this group isn't as elite as he may have assumed. And he certainly has done a lot of things away from the program that benefit him and don't benefit UK.

Do think he's understanding this program needs to move away from small ball and get bigger and he's recruited like it. My friend who has some insight mentioned that Cal privately thinks this group is too soft and he can't stand 2 players on the team. He may say publicly how much he "loves his team" but he's realizing need for size and toughness.

I'm tired of briscoe defenders. He only gets his stats from changing the way we play which screws our mojo up. When briscoe plays his way, it makes it hard for others. I'm not saying it's impossible to have him play well and us win. I'm saying when his stats look great no one else s do - typically.

You have to try and develop even the threat of an inside game for postseason, otherwise you're one dimensional and likely to flame out . Yea it messed with the team dynamic but a necessary step , the players and team need to evolve even at the expense of what's good for now . We can revert for the tournament and at least we will have worked on post play .

exactly. It's the reason Cal coaching vanilla basketball works early and sometimes doesn't late. Yea, being a young team and winning on the road is tough, but some of it is exactly what this post is getting at.

for march we need to be able to play in the half court in general. what's frustrating is we are use to having an effective base defense to build on. but we don't have that or the offense in the half court. if we wind up on the bubble cal may consider just opening things back up. we gave up 80+ and whether we can average 90 or not i believe we won't win in march without defense. but a better flowing offense for these athletes and we can at least get 2/3 wins imo. when we're cold we have zero chance. no defense is the reason and tat reality is starting to sink in. so sad too they all have the talent/quickness to be great on ball defenders.

Our problem has been and continues to be ONE thing and only ONE: our defense. Fix that and we win #9.

I feel like he hurt the 2015 team with his insistence on pounding it in the post. I think the South Carolina game we played bad down low and he said he was going to tweak our inside game. From that point on our shooters started passing up shots and thinking about it too much. That messes with a shooter. I know there needs to be balance, and we also had KAT, but a team that had been on its toes and gutting people, seemed like they started playing on their heels more. I know it sounds crazy about a 38-1 team, but it is how I see it. That team was so good early but he messed them up.

Well Cal and his staff are the ones that recruited the small and apparently weak guys. No one on Cal's staff could not see Bam could not shoot more than 2 feet away?? No one on Cal's staff could see that Hump is no good? What did the even recruit SKJ for? I believe there are serious internal conflicts on this team.
The wheels have came off to quickly. We got guys with mystery illnesses and injuries? Some players look miserable on the court.
These guys honestly just look like they can't wait for the season to end.

Bam needs to learn to give the ball up. Players would not feed him because he rarely gives it up. He did once last night. Bam is also hacked continuously.
