Cal's Recruiting Weakness

We have been lacking that 6-6/6-7 athletic do it all wing who can shoot and create off the dribble. I get that those guys are tough to come by. The last few years we just haven't had anyone who fits that bill...I guess James Young was the last guy who fit that profile and he helped us to a deep tourney run. Cal has put a ton of bigs ...4/5 spot players, and guards in the league...but SF's other than journeyman MKG have been sorely lacking.

We've been basically playing a 6-3 guard at SF for the last couple years....our only other option are 6-9 guys like Gabriel and Willis..or another guard (Muldur).

It has really hurt the last couple of years. Briscoe should be have been a sub for Ulis and Fox, not the starting SF. Don't forget there was no SF on the 38-1 team either.

James Young really wasn't that either. He stayed on the perimeter, wasn't an elite athlete, he lacked effort on defense and he was awful actually handling the ball. To say he could "do it all" is kind of an insult to real "do it all" guys.

James Young was pretty Elite athletically. He had a 7ft wingspan with a 37" vertical at 6'6. His lane agility was strong too.

It was odd though, other than his jumper he really didn't possess a ton of ability in any other aspect of the game. Ball skills were atrocious, footwork bad, passing bad, low bball IQ on both ends. He just had this unbelievable knack for willing in tough baskets and pulling down tough rebounds.

I said when he was drafted that he had bust written all over him. I'd like to be wrong about that one. But it's not looking good.

Wow, now we're critiquing Cals recruiting? Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe you can list the true top flight SF's we've had the last few years. If you read my post, you'd notice I said Cal has been enormously successful recruiting and sending bigs and guards to the league. I actually think he's a great recruiter but we've haven't been able to snag an elite SF.

Yeah, MKG is on his 8th team now.

Oh wait...
I am listing him as an elite SF...at least at the college level. In the NBA, he's been a decent player. Averaging 9ppg, and 46% FG%, and 21% 3pt FG% for his career. Sounds like a journeyman to me.

Only listing PPG for a player like MKG is very misleading and you know it. He's not a "journeyman". He's on his second contract with the Hornets.

Well, journeyman doesn't have a bad connotation in my book. It describes someone who is solid at their craft, but isn't a star performer. Doesn't that describe MKG?

I'm going to have to disagree... if we're looking for 6'6 - 6'9 players who can create easily for themselves, 38-1 had three players who could do that adequately [harrisons, booker] and 2 different ones that were not absolute turnstiles on D [lyles, poy].

Poy got hurt but I don't think the rest were utilized optimally even though a 38-1 record says other wise..

That's bc youre only looking at his shooting stats. His general scoring is still abysmal but the ability to guard the best player on the other team helps you carve out a niche in the league

Yeah, that team had some answers at the 3 spot, but Booker is basically a guard (as was Andrew), and Aaron never was anything approaching an elite athlete. Lyles was more of a PF in college and AP never had the skills to be an elite SF. Though any of those guys could certainly help us this year.

Agree 100% none of those guys were ideal 3s in college, except maybe booker. But any of those guys should have been able to be positive players at the three. The fact it 39 games that season to show we had a glaring problem there just is a testament to how much talent Cal brings in.
