He averages 6 & 6 for UK right now. At this moment he's not a lotto pick. Best case scenario today he would be late 1st round
What were Trey lyles and Karl Towns averages? Devin Booker? Daniel Orton? He's a 6'10 wirey, long, athletic 4 with great form on his jump shot. A stretch 4 with his athletic abilities along with size and length is almost guaranteed lottery. The only area he truly needs to improve on is growing into his body and adding strength. Which is just a matter of time due to how young he is.

If the kid is good enough to go and make NBA money...why would you not root/encourage them to do so. Kid can always come back to school but I'm pretty sure the change to play in the NBA is at best a one in a million opportunity.

First of all he looks closer to 6'8 than 6'10 out on the court. His athleticism is average at best and his length is nice but there's 0 strength behind it.

As of now he's a 6'9 forward with spot up 3 shooting ability who rebounds and blocks shots. Nothing about that screams NBA first rounder as there are plenty of guys in college who are 6'9 and can hit a 3. He's not a guy that has shown any ability to create off the dribble or use any craftiness to get to the basket. He has average athleticism and his lateral quickness is subpar and a little awkward to be honest. And he's also technically a sophomore at his age. If he was 6'9, 230lbs with a 38" vertical and the ability to do like Monk does and drive, stop, and rise up for jumpers, then you may have something. Spot up 3s aren't enough to make you lottery picks with his measureables from what I've seen.

That being said it's hard to see him returning since everyone mentions how bad his family needs him to make it. I think he may be gone even if he's undrafted. Could go overseas and still make very good money to support a family. I wouldn't hate on him for trying to be the breadwinner for them. I wish him the best but I hope he stays one more year to learn true wing skills, add some weight and work his way into a future with the NBA making millions instead of a couple hundred thousand dollars a year.

When I said Lotto pick, I meant, and alluded to as much, if he keeps this up. While he's 6 and 6 on the year, he's at a Double Double over the last 3, against two team that are pretty damn good.

So my question to you, and this may be premature, which player is Gabriel? The barely 6 and 6 guy (or less, removing his last 3 games) in the early going as he adjusted.. or the top25 recruit that's recently putting up 10 and 10? Or even, is this 10 and 10 area even his peak?

Point being I really don't weigh the first 10-15 games of a Freshman forwards career at Kentucky. I don't think the NBA will either.

He is not "wirey". He is skinny.

He has nowhere near the body or basketball instincts of the guys you mentioned.

WG still cannot dribble, not a great passer.

He cannot defend straight-line drives.

Somebody please look up the SF's in the league right now and tell me who he guards and how he scores?

Do the same for the PF's.

He very well might be drafted, but he has a ways to go to be anything more than pure potential right now.

Hope he stays and gets stronger and more comfortable with the game and secures a high pick next year.

Unless of course he absolutely blows up and we win #9.

Hey, Brian...how you doing? wife and kids are great? (I hope)
I agree with everything you said...especially the NBA drafting on potential...
who knows what some of those GMs are thinking?
But, if he gets a 1st round nod, I think he has to go...Alex is an example of that. Alex was one of my favorites, but he should have left for the NBA after his freshman year (IIRC he was projected 1st round, an maybe top 20)

Wenyen deserves much recognition for his play of late. Rooting for him like any other player. He appears to be a great kid. I hope he achieves all his dreams and does great things at the next level. But rather he's a one and done or a two-year player, I think the argument could me made that his rookie contract would be much larger if he came back and found himself in the lottery verses 2nd round (and that's where I think he is today.)

If Wenyen can average 10 &10 here on out I think UK will most likely win the title and he would go first round, probably not lottery. I also don't think that he will average 10 & 10 the rest of the year. Over the last 3 games he has shot better , but still against USC he was 3-8 from 3 and 4-9 from the floor for 11 points.

Those numbers don't exactly scream drastic improvement for me, especially because all of his 3 pt attempts are wide open and teams are daring him to shoot. Add along what BP said above about his passing, dribbling and defense. And those are the reasons why I believe gabriel will back next year. The only bad thing about that is IDT that we get Knox if WG stays.

I don't see him going much better than 10 and 10, but who knows. He may not be done. Cal definitely loosened his leash. He's going to get more minutes and more touches, and be trusted in big games.

Either way, he'll get a look from NBA teams if he continues his play. That's for certain.

1 other thing is (I know we don't pick our conference) he's doing this against SEC teams. Might be factored into a scouting perspective. Also next year I can see WG much improved, If he can get a consistent 15 foot jumper he will be unstoppable next year.

Well, those three games.. two of them were against a top25 team and probably a top50 team. He did pretty well against tough competition, even if it is SEC.

MisstSt is probably a top50 team (idk if they lost the other night). On the other hand.. BPI and Knepom have them averaged right around 100.

And they did lose the other night.. @Tenn..

Still before Kentucky and a tough game @Tenn.. MissSt looking pretty solid. Probably on the verge of receiving votes.

I still cast my vote with the wait and see crowd. I'm not not sold that he's gone yet. How many here are kind of giving him an extra nudge in hopes it leads to us landing Knox? While I would like to have Knox, i would love to have a sophomore Gabriel back instead

He is at this moment a top 20 pick . Hell even 2 weeks ago he was a 1st rounder on potential alone. If he continues this play he is a top 12-15 pick.

Where are you seeing this?

Draft Express doesn't list him in their top 60.

Family is great thank for asking.

I do not disagree with anyone leaving for a guaranteed 1st round contract, whether they are ready or not.

So since when did someone being skinny not qualify them as 'wirey'. I would call Marcus Lee wirey and he was always skinny. It's a matter of height and length and nothing to do with being big or skinny. Wenyen is not a future SF. He's a stretch 4. The only knock to his measurables are strength. Yet did you see where Thon Maker and Brandon ingram and KD were drafted? Being skinny as a freshman does absolutely nothing negative to ones draft stock when the player is that young. It's pretty much expected for freshman big men who leave for the draft that they will be skinny. Because most of them haven't filled out their body. Which isn't one of those things where NBA GM's are going to be like I just wonder if he'll fill out. Because when you're working out with an NBA regimen if a franchise wants you to add bulk they'll add bulk. AD was very skinny as a freshman at UK. It's not a matter of if but when. If we're to base this on potential which is all the NBA draft is then yes he is a very likely first round pick and nobody should ever pass that up.

The passing and dribbling are a bit overstated.. Regardless.. The NBA cares about potential. Hart is a superb dribbler and passer, poised, floor general. Where is he in the draft, after 3-4 years of college?

Gabriel has that raw potential and NBA size.. Even if he doesn't have it all down yet. He's exactly what the league wants. Buy low, get possibly a top10 recruit next year, but a year earlier around 34.

First you compare the kid to Lyles, Towns and Booker.

Now it's Maker, Ingram and and KD.

Maker is at least 3 inches taller and can do this...

Ingram is way better tooled player than WG right now.

Let's be honest, WG isn't at this level yet.

And KG? Seriously?

I love WG. But the kid does not have the skill for the 3 or the defense for a 4. Keep in mind that a stretch four is only on offense. If the other team has a PF he still has to be able to defend guys like...

AD
Randle
Griffin
Randolph
Aldridge
etc...

I dont doubt he will get bigger and stronger. He has a nice shot and is rebounding and blocking shots well.

But he still cannot create a shot, because he doesnt dribble, and he still gets lost on both ends of the floor. Lateral movement is suspect but he has a great motor.

He is not a natural though, kid was playing JV as a sophomore in high school.

I think he can be a fine player and in the NBA, as of today, right now, I dont think he's worthy of a 1st round pick. But if he gets one I'll cheer him on.

Yeah im not accusing anyone here of sabotaging him and hoping he fails so that he returns. But it's potential, I'll continue to say it. It'll be interesting to see how this all goes in the next few weeks. Personally, I don't mind if we lose him from a kentucky standpoint.. We have like 23 recruits coming in next year anyways.

Ingram is having a pretty awful rookie year btw. This guy, many said would be better than Simmons. He posted like a -45per the other night.

Lol. Have you seen Maker play in person? Because I have. Absolutely hilarious you use a highlight reel as to why he's such a great prospect. His little brother impressed me more than he did. In fact Thon Maker was a virtual non factor in any way shape or form. Against high school competition, granted it was the best high school/prep competition. But still. That highlight reel was up before I ever saw him play in person, and if you're saying wenyen needs to stay and gain strength. Then Thon Maker need to be in d league next year or 2. Most thin prospect I've ever seen in person i was honestly shocked by it when I saw it he was the sole reason I even went to the event because of the highlight reels I had seen and he did nothing. And pretty much further proving my point. THAT NO MATTER WHAT STRENGTH WONT EFFECT A PLAYER HIS AGE DRAFT STOCK.

It's all about measurables, skill, and potential and if you don't see a ton of that in Gabriel then you're a crazy crazy guy. And besides strength. What other area besides strength does he truly need to severely improve on to be a good stretch 4? Height, length, athleticism and the form on his shot are all very good. He doesn't need great ball handling to be a 4. Just decent. And I'm almost certain that improves greatly over time too since he is such a skilled player with thru the roof potential. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree but I think you're dead wrong. He has all the measurables to go lottery and if it were last season's class id gaurantee he would The only thing he truly has going against him is such a great, deep class. I'd love wenyen to return. But if he's projected 15-20 then I can't phathom any earthly reason for him to return. You can't gaurantee yourself you can leave next year or the year after that and see those same kind of numbers.

And the only comparison I made with those players. Was the fact strength doesn't matter. I do not think Thon in any way, shape or form was a better high school player than wenyen last season. Cmon now that's hilarious it's a highlight reel. I've watched entire games of the guy before he entered the draft and his little brother outplayed him. Thon got manhandled. Not saying the potential isn't there with him at all. But anyone who went to Dunbar for those games saw what I saw and came away very unimpressed. But just proving the point strength doesn't matter when it comes to draft stock at all. That is my only comparison between them.

Let's get one thing straight right out of the gate. Gabriel turns 20 in 2 months. He's not some 17/18 year old like SKJ or Humphries. You can tell the difference between guys like SKJ, AD, etc as guys who, while thin, have broad shoulders and will fill out as they get older. Wenyen has a build more similar to Durant, a guy who will struggle to make it past 230lbs. He has definitely added weight and strength to his frame but for someone who should be a collegiate sophormore, he's still severely lacking, even if he was a freshman. The fact that he's almost 20 just makes it worse.

As for his athleticism, I never said he was Dakari Johnson. I said he's an average athlete. An average athlete will still dunk and block shots. I'm simply stating that at 6'9 with a 6'11 wingspan (which, by the way, are not eye popping numbers for a 4 in the NBA) he doesn't have incredible athleticism to make up for his deficits in strength or size. Incredible athleticism would be guys that get their head at the rim or run like a gazelle. He plays hard and no one can take that away from him. But you can tell a difference the way someone like AD or Durant get up and down the court and navigate around on offense and defense and the way Gabriel does. He looks like a newborn horse at times.

As for all your comparisons to players, refer to BrianPoes post. None of this is to say Wenyen will never be an NBA player, let alone that he won't be a good one. The point of this thread is to voice opinions on whether A) He's gone or not and B) If he is gone where will he go. Nothing Gabriel provides or can provide in the near future screams lottery pick to my eyes. That's reserved for players like Monk, Fox, Fultz, Tatum, Jackson, etc. Gabriel is as best a late first rounder, more likely second rounder.

You've seen him play in person? And still had the audacity to judge him by a highlight tape? If you've seen the guy in person. You can't possibly tell me you've ever seen a more thin prospect in your entire life. When I saw him, he got manhandled. I don't think I saw him score anything besides a free throw. He missed every field goal attempt and got blown away like paper in the wind. Much more thin than wenyen btw. Further reaffirming my point that strength does not matter in the draft. I have a really hard time believing you've seen him in person considering you're talking about him like he's a human highlight reel. My only point has been strength does not matter and is hardly ever a reason for a player to return. Like you keep claiming.

You are obviously struggling here.

Did you just see WG attempt to drive vs UT?

An NBA player can be skinny if he is skilled, the video I showed was Maker displaying high end basketball skills. Good handles and good move.

You have not seen WG create his own shot yet. Maker was doing this in high school.

If WG is not going to bring solid basketball skills - dribbling, passing, feel for the game then he better get stronger. No way he rebounds like he has the past couple of games in the NBA.

And lets not talk about audacity while on your 4th screen name in less than 2 seasons.
