Very annoying indeed. Hedge and bust your *** over the screen. Switching everything is the lazy way.
They dont even set real screens. Just kinda stand there and we auto switch with a big on a guard.

Exactly it's a Cal staple but switching creates serious mismatches hedge and fight over screens
We had went away from switching the last couple of games and did more hedging and it worked well.

Good coaches with capable players kill us with this crap. It will cost us again at a crucial point this year I'm afraid. Gotta hope we get the right match ups in the dance. We get the combo of smart coach and fundamental athletes and we are beat. Hope we don't catch that perfect mix

We've done less switching on screens than any team in the Cal era but people just refuse to change their rants.

I won't do the usual and call you idiots and reference the final fours and hall of fame and all that, you all know that stuff. Think of it this way. There is no defensive system, no philosophy that is perfect. Any system will have weak points. Can we agree on that? Cal is one of the best defensive coaches in the country. He annually has highly ranked defenses, playing mostly freshmen.

They "made" us switch into idiotic mismatches at will, almost lost us the game yet again late.
Cal will never learn, apparently.
It will more than likely be a prevalent factor yet again when/if we lose in March.
So for those who have never played I'll ask, what do you want them to do on it? The hard hedge works if you're quick enough to do that but They aren't quick enough to do that and get back to their man in time. Feel free to suggest what else would work

We're not quick enough? Then how the hell do we run the break so well? Fox and Monk are as quick as anyone out there! They just can't play defense and Cal is trying to hide that apparently. Almost all other good teams fight through the screens by having the off guy hedge out and then rotate back to his man. It's all about effort and coaching.
Yep. Willis hedged and his man got a open three, Wenyen hedged and his man rolled to the basket for a layup and two other times for fouls. Mulder hedged and his man hit the three. There were other examples where Hump was involved and Dom before they decided to switch.
The switch is t the problem, the problem is guarding a three point shooting team with a foot between you and him, Bam and Wenyen are notorious for doing this thinking they can recover in time to effect the shot. The correct way would be to get in their players chest and personal space to give him no other option than to drive. Cal yells "GET UP" over and over on the switch but instead the players stick their arms out and gives the shooter enough room to to load up and fire.

And you noticed their man doesn't go and screen because both are quick enough to switch and make sure you don't get a open three. You didn't see guys using them in the screen and shooting jumpers over them
And that would be exactly what UK would want. Twos won't kill them because UK can it score pretty much anyone, but three pointers are the great equalizer so giving them up is a no no, especially a team that is good at shooting them

Having your 4 and 5 getting driven on out at the 3 point line is an automatic basket every time... no one over 6'2 would be back to defend.
Many teams win with 2 pointers, in fact I have seen games in which teams made more 2's than 3's and still won the game...

The reason this worked with the 2012 team is because of a guy named Anthony Davis.
He was a rim defender and erased a lot of breakdowns on defensive switches.
Gilchrist was fast enough to come from the weak side and help too. This team doesn't have that type of guy. I agree that the blueprint to beat this team is out there now.

Who has more final fours in Cal's time here? Or is your brain too one dimensional to know the answer?
No it's not a automatic basket. That's why you have help defense. What is you're soulation then. Hedging was tried and it didn't work, switching was tried and that's not working so what's you're solution??
How can Cal and the assistant coaches not see on film that the constant switching on defense is the biggest reason UK's defense is broken down? A couple of other notes from tonight's game - Fox has to learn how to stay in front of his player on defense. He gambles way too much and causes other UK players to help and get in foul trouble. Last but not least, someone on the team has to call out Derek Willis and the zero effort he plays on defense.
Another thing that Vandy did was send only one guy and sometimes no one to the offensive boards. They conceded the rebound to keep us out of transition.
You know what's really hard to guard? A pick and roll where you don't switch. No defense is perfect, but the switch defense is a great defense. Cal can't pack in all kinds of defense in a year starting four freshmen. Jay bilas said recently that if the pick and roll is run well, it's impossible to guard. Our defensive efficiency is great, and we'll be much better in March. Relax..
Sometimes there just isn't a right answer if he players aren't quick enough or good enough on defense to switch or hedge. Some people just aren't good defenders and you have to live with it and hope for the best like Cal did with Willis last season. You just hope they do more good than bad
