We didn't win the NC in 2012?

Have I bumped my head? Alternate universe?

Yes, the National Championship has been the goal as long as I've been watching (1981).

We've even won it THREE TIMES. Three times in 35 years...I'd be pretty miserable if that's all that mattered to me. Maybe as miserable as you.

Just call it like it is man, K and Duke are living rent free inside the heads of a lot of our fans.

Actually yes you're right, the numbers don't lie. You listen to coach so long about using speed and talent in transition you forget that alot of our teams played inside out.
I do stand by my point of not getting enough time with your guys to really teach a smooth half court offense. This is why I wish folks wouldnt complain about losing confidence in the team. It's like, who sold you a bill of goods? The team or yourself?

I think we are often shaky early but usually pretty strong by the end of the year.

But this team is different. The question for me is how sustainable this uptempo style will be.

I hope we can stick with it. It's fun to watch, imo.

There's some truth to that. But Duke had an eight year stretch with one Final Four. Problem was those were the Tubby/Gillispie years where we weren't getting a whole lot accomplished.

Even in the Cal years, Duke has 2 Titles but the other years were nothing special.

Of course I wish we'd closed the deal another time or two, but going to these 4 Final Fours has been a blast.

This team, like all of Cal's team will improve. We will be in the mix with a handful of other teams to cut down the nets. Takes talent and some luck to win it all.
Every year Cal has been here sans the Noel injury year. I have felt like we have at least had a shot to win it all. That is all you can ask for.

What's amazing are the folks who say we have a young team and that means we likely won't win it all. Newsflash every team we have is going to be young. If we don't make a final four this year with this talent I guarantee there will be a movement by lots of fans to call for cal to start retaining players. Next year could be a major nightmare depending on who goes this season which appears to be about everyone

btw stop hanging your hat on a championship we won 5 years ago. We are past due for another one based on the players we have brought in the last 5 years. Our program has actually underacheived. This season is a big one in terms of keeping up with Duke lately or catching UCLA as cal has stated is his goal

Of course we likely retain more players if we don't make a deep run.

If we make a Final Four run, Briscoe and Gabriel, for instance, will probably need to play well.

Their stock goes up, as does their probability of leaving.

I say we let the season play out, then come late February or early March, lets have this conversation and see how things look then.
This is like comparing apples to oranges; our team with all its youth to teams with multiple returning players.
Pretty much all of you have made good points on things we need to improve upon, but right now, I am looking at which teams have the greatest ceiling. If we hit our ceiling, then you can bet we will be in the mix come late March/early April

Yes you must've bumped your head because you said national championships and repeat in the same post and, he hasn't done that and I don't have faith that he will anytime soon.

You can label me miserable or whatever you'd like, you're not changing anybody's mind raving about finishing 2nd 3rd and 4th-8th place(that's great, if you're a millennial pu**y). Especially when we lost to worse teams(often dogcrap, see UConn) in falling short of the main goal.

I have competitive fire and expectations of what is supposed to be best program in my favorite sport. With what we're putting in to it as a university(of which I'm an alum as well), program, and fanbase we should've repeated by now.

I don't think losing 1 home game means that we can't win it all. In 2015 Duke lost by 16 at home to a Miami team that didn't even make the NCAA Tournament. UCLA easily looks like a Final Four team, at least right now. Our '98 team lost 3 home games, so that statistic seems pretty meaningless.

Now I'm not going off the deep end and saying that UK is a horrible team and doesn't have a shot of winning it all. However I have my concerns, some legit and some superstitious.

Only 2 of the 8 past national championship teams have lost at home. This team lost at home. 3 point shooting is atrocious and shooting in general isn't great(not including dunks and layups which UK is very good and why we have 48% FG). Coach Cal seems reluctant to play our best 3 point shooter, because he isn't a good defender(the 8 guys that let UCLA score 97 points are CLEARLY much better defenders). Something else that is troublesome is the fact that coach Cal encourages Briscoe and Fox to shoot jumpers(guessing for NBA draft stock and to raise their confidence). Fact is they aren't great shooters, but that's ok. We don't need them to be good shooters. They are really good at other things that help this team be a title contender. They need to understand their role on the team and sacrifice for the greater good of the team to succeed. My suggestion is take one three a game and if you make it then shoot them until you miss.

I feel like if this team is going to win it all this will need to happen. Willis needs to play more consistent and stronger with the ball. Gabrielle can't break down and have mental lapses on defense(as much). The team needs to get Bam more involved on offense and help defense needs to improve when we do have defensive break downs. I also feel like UK should try to have two of Monk/Willis/Mulder on the floor as much as possible to help with driving lanes.

That being said I've been really impressed with the team. They have exceeded my expectations so far. Briscoe imroved his FT % and FG%. Bam is becoming more consistent and learning to stay out of foul trouble. Monk is playing like Derek Anderson. Fox is an all around great player and probably the most diverse player in UK history. Minus the UCLA loss this team has been the most consistent team through 9 games in UK history. Overall I'm excited to see how this season plays out. One thing I know for sure is that this team is the most exciting team to watch since I've been born 1988. What do you all think about this season so far?
15 Duke lost to unranked Miami at home and then looked dominant the tourney and won. Individual w l in December is just about seeding.

Millennial :joy:.

No, I've been around long enough to hopefully gain a measure of wisdom.

What are you competitive about? What, did you win a cheetoh eating contest or something?

Because unless you're Phil Jackson or maybe Nick Saban, you sound like a moron claiming we haven't gotten enough out of our program.

No, take that back. Game recognizes game. Only someone who has never competed and won would think we have underperformed. People who are irrational.

I've competed plenty, won and lost my share. But not sure why you're diverting to my success and failures. That has nothing to do with this thread and why I think we'll fall short, once again, with superior talent.

You're the one who said you weren't satisfied because of your competitive fire.

I'm suggesting that your expectations are unreasonable.

You whine about losing to UCONN, without crediting wins over Wisconsin, and Michigan, and UL, and Wichita St.

That is the definition of unreasonable.

Yes, fans, alum, program supporters are allowed to and supposed to be competitive. And I am.

UK had incredibly superior talent and resources and beat those teams to win it all, once, out of how many times. I expect it to be repeated at least once as the superior talent, resources, and competitive advantage is repeated. Finish, again.

Because no other schools had talent or resources?

What make our resources "incredibly superior?" You have any data to back that up?

So you aren't satisfied with Final Fours and championship game appearances, only Titles.

But if/when we win again, you will suddenly shut your mouth and be happy? Somehow doubt that.

Btw, which one are you? Cut-nets or...?

There certainly have been a handful of others of your breed.

Fan support, monetary input, facilities, overall talent. UK is unmatched when all of those factors are put together. Period. Not even arguable.

No, not satisfied with Cal only winning 1 title so far. Certainly not satisfied with how tight Cal gets in those FF and NC games. Except for being at the games in 2012 those games weren't even really satisfying, almost blowing it to UofL and KU, squandering away huge leads and control of those games.

If Cal wins it all again, then yes, I'll be satisfied. Knowing that how he does it, turning over the roster each and every year, can actually repeat the excellence that is the main goal of this program.

The advantage Calipari has each season in talent is completely offset by extreme youth and the necessity of constructing an entirely new team- and sometimes playing style- every season. That baseline of talent ensures consistency- since he's been here, no won has won more NCAA games or been to as many Final Fours as we have- but the tradeoff has probably cost him another title or two.

The vague (or not so vague) sense of underachievement many of us feel (myself included to some degree) comes from the great expectations suggested by our #1 classes, along with the fact that both Duke and UConn have managed to win two titles to our one, with UConn's coming at our direct expense.

That, overall, we have been far more consistent than these two programs- and everyone else- is offset by the fact that Cal has yet to win a 2nd title.

I don't think we'll win it all because Cal lets his chosen handfull play through mistake after mistake. And they'll still be making those same mistakes in March(playing against better teams/coaches) because that's what the young ones do, especially when a minute or two on bench isn't used as motivator/teaching. Meanwhile other players that should be getting minutes and development will stay at the same level on the bench, not improved for March or the year/s after. Rinse, repeat.

This is so freaking dumb:flush:

So have you been down on the program for your whole life?

Joe B. only won one Title. Ditto Rick. And Tubby.

Have you been bitter over our lack of "excellence" 90% of the time, or did something change when Cal came along?

I enjoy every season of UK basketball, to varying degrees. Ending any season with an L is painful. At least in seasons under all other coaches I could immediately look forward to and hope that the majority of the team would be back to try to do better.

I don't think they will win it all. However if they can get some luck in the regional then they can make a final four run. As of now I think sweet sixteen or elite eight.

Before last weekend I thought they were an elite team but now I think they are just a good team. It is essential they beat either UNC or Louisville.

Cak says we are KENTUCKY we can do what we want...why are we starting four freshman and then use it as an excuse?...the gold standard of cbb should not be in this position.

Do you ever not complain?

What position are you talking about?

Ranked 6th in the country? Number 7 offense? Number 4 defense?

Which of those numbers isn't good enough for you this week?

Derek Anderson never played like Monk. Monks a much better athlete and a much better shooter.

As far as being concerned about winning it all, the sun will still come up, and life will go on. There's always next year.

Only 2 of the 8 past national championship teams have lost at home.

98 championship team had an ugly loss to a very bad unranked UL team in Rupp. UK fans at the time said the team would be lucky to get to the Sweet Sixteen. Don't worry about UK now. It's about getting it together in March.

Being forever young and then complaining( using as excuse) that we are that way.
