He's patronizing you. Cal doesn't care what I think and I'm well aware of that fact. I just like talking basketball with other fans.

Even though I did coach a 5th grade team to an 11-2 record, I still understand that Cal knows quite a bit more about the game than I do. And he knows the personnel that he recruited and coaches every day about 1000 times better than I do.

But Cal's got his eye on you Terry. He's watching you man!

Then he is barking up wrong tree

Sure, we do not really no why; however, this is a message board to talk about the team. So all we know is he did not play - there is nothing that indicates Mulder mouthed off or did something off the court.

All we can do as fans is make inferences based on what we know.
Yeah but when people call Cal an idiot or say it was gross negligence not to play a guy, that is ignorance to the point of idiocy. Both of those things have been said in this thread.

I like Mulder a lot. But the folks saying he deserves more playing time than Briscoe are totally clueless about basketball or are just trying to stir the pot. Briscoe is one of the best guards in America. UK needs Briscoe on the court, end of discussion. It's not even debatable.

Mulder will get some PT but he is not as good as Briscoe or Fox or Monk and therefore will ot play as much. It is as simple as that .
.
Rex addressed Mulder/Willis issues quite candidly and intelligently on the pregame show. He said Mulder is a relatively weak ball handler and passer under pressure and a sub par defender but has other great skills. He said Willis lacks lower body strength to box out defenders and also lacks upper body strength and lateral quickness. He prefaced these remarks by saying that he attends practice frequently and that he likes aspects of both players' games . He emphasized that his remarks were based on his observations not those of any one else. P.S. Anyone listening to him for two minutes understands that he knows whereof he speaks.

Mulder wasn't one of the sick ones. It was Willis,Hawkins, SKJ and Hump. Willis and Hawkins played so it had nothing to do with sickness and everything to do with Cal thinking they weren't ready to play a team as good as UCLA. For that game I can agree because Mulder wouldn't be able to guard any of those UCLA guards (worse than what the better defenders were doing). And SKJ is just not good enough right now

And for the last time. Mulder AND SKJ didn't play in the UCLA game because they were shaking off the Bahamin virus effects. You Cal haters need to back off! Several players (5-6) were a step slow due to that virus; it did cost us the game, NOT Cal's coaching, for chrissakes.

Well Rondo became a allStar in the NBA while being one of the worse shooting guards in NBA history and continues to start as a awful shooter soooooooo

Briscoe is the worst shooting guard I've seen at UK in close to 50 years of watching the Cats play. Unreal how someone that's supposed to be a five star player can't hit the broad side of a barn into his second year of college. Dickie Beal was bad his first couple of years but Briscoe makes him look like Jerry West.

Ktcatattack...are you a coach??? If we have regular jobs we cant claim to know basketball

Dude, are you still trying to convince people of your genius intelligence? You can't even put a normal freaking sentence together but somehow you know as much as a hall of fame basketball coach.

I tell you what, why don't you give some actual input. In all of your personal back patting, when have you ever said ANYTHING that an average person hasn't said before? Have you ever talked about basketball in an X's and O's sense? Or is "duh, play mulder more, duh, I know what I'm talking about. I used to coach baseball 30 years ago, duh" all you can come up with?

Here is a little test for you guys in terms of Cal...when he says you basketball beanies...you realize he is making fun of us??? Basically saying we know nothing

In some cases, he's damn hard to argue with. In a few cases, he's so right, its embarrassing.

You know, I find that you realizing he's making fun of a few fans might indicate its not your first rodeo in that regard.

Mulder & Brickso are pretty even players. They both bring their own set of skills that can help this team do great things. Both should play around 20 minutes per game.

I get that Brisco isn't the best shooter, but I can't for the life me understand when it became OK to disrespect our players on the forum like this. You have referred to Brisco as "Brickso" in several threads. You should be banned for it.

FWIW I'm not saying Mulder shouldn't play. It's just when this question is raise it's always at the expense of Briscoe. And I don't think that should be the case.

If anything I see him taking more minutes from guys like Hawkins and maybe even Willis

Now this is closer to the mark than any. Mulder is a good ball player. There is only one problem with that: Better ball players.

We have many.

Give Mulder Bridcoes rope and you would see all the stats flip in Mulders favor...we need them both but Briscoe mins shoul not double or triple Mulders...but i work at UPS...what could i possibly know that Cal doesnt???? Sarcasm drips
dude...you say this...then state you can't possible know as much as a hall of fame coach, and he probably knows what he is doing.

Haven't looked since last night but before that Mulder was averaging 8 points per game in his very limited minutes. He had also made only six less 3's pointers than Monk while taking 15-20 less 3 point shots than Monk. That is Outstanding production from the SF spot. Add in Mulder's rebounding and he's been great. Go back and Actually watch him on defense against Valpo. He wasn't bad, in fact he was actually good. Some can defend Cal on not playing him all they want but it won't make them or Cal right.

As for comparing Mulder and Briscoe's per minute stats, Briscoe is a pg playing SG while Mulder is a SF/SG. Mulder isn't supposed to have to same number of assists as Briscoe or really even close. Also the only reason Briscoe is shooting a better percentage overall is because 85% of his shots are layups while 90%+ of Mulders are at or behind the 3pt line.

This all started with people saying Mulder should take Briscoe's minutes, so comparing them works. When Fox is in the game, which is a lot, Briscoe occupies the same position Mulder plays when he is in. The per minute stats were in reference to someone who said they thought Mulder was the better overall player, which you would have a hard time finding evidence to back that up, and is why the per minute stats were used. It is as simple as this, a lot of people value shooting much more than any other aspect of basketball, which is fine, but is does not make one player so much better than another, when the other player does virtually everything else better or equally.

Having said all of that, if we were having trouble scoring, then the need for a shooter like Mulder is more important. At that point it wouldn't matter about all the other aspects. Problem is, we have no trouble scoring, as is evident from our 90+ ppg average. There may be a game where you need Mulder to do some shooting to make things easier on the offensive end, but against UCLA was not one of those times.

When a 5 star plays poor defense, well, he's a 5 star so you live with it, if your a mutt, well, you get the picture......

Yes cause Cal doesn't take guys out when they are lazy on D, even the 5 stars *rolls eyes.

It doesn't matter to Cal. First half last night Willis goes in, messes up on D and gets yanked 30 seconds later.

Second half Fox does something similar, gets pulled.

Cal even mentioned in the post game interview how he had to yank guys because they were playing lazy on D.

oh, I thought you were serious; when you implied that Cal. may no much more about coaching (since he is a fulltime, HOFer, National Champion coach, at UK); than a fan that coaches on the side while working a fulltime job (you).
I know, I know...crazy thought on my part...

Well, number one, he isn't a shooting guard, he is a point guard playing small forward. Secondly, that should tell people just how good this guy is, the fact that he doesn't shoot the ball very well, yet 9games into the year, he is averaging 16.3 points per game. As was also noted, Briscoe usually draws the assignment of the best guard of the other team.

Not in reference to the quoted post, but to this thread in general, there is more to basketball than shooting. However, for whatever reason, people seem to think shooting fixes everything. It can masks some things, but over time, even those things come to light. As has been said before, Cal values defense over everything else. And to be honest, basketball is more complex than most are giving it credit for. Just because Mulder does a decent job guarding his man when he is in there, doesn't mean he is adequate at playing it. If he plays for Briscoe, then it is likely that Fox now has to switch to guard the guy Briscoe was guarding, then Monk has to switch to the guy that Fox was guarding so as to give Mulder the weakest of the perimeter players. Meaning that you didn't just get worse at Mulder's position, but actually 3 different positions. Then Mulder does an adequate job on his man and many people claim he isn't as bad as it was claimed to be. Yes he is just as bad, but it is being masked.

Cal plays the regular season for 2 reasons, seeding and preparation for the NCAA Tournament. Fans live game to game, but Cal does not. Most of Cal's decisions revolve around those two things.
In response, when I'm talking about shooting guard, I'm referring to ability and not position, meaning a guard that can't shoot regardless where he is on offense. Secondly, basketball is more than shooting but when your guards cannot consistently hit the outside shot it's trouble, especially with limited offensive ability in the post.

Briscoe isn't a shooting guard. I hope you are smart enough to realize he is playing out of position.
I hope you're smart enough to realize he holds the single game record for stepping on the baseline. Glad you're soon be a coach since you know so much. Read my last post; I was referring to a guard that can't shoot rather than a reference to a position players. Guards that can't shoot, regardless of where their position on the floor are a liability against good teams.

Cal said he didnt play SKJ and Mulder due to defense. Unless you think Cal is lying.

If Kentucky can get to the title game in 97 and win it all in 98 with Cam Mills playing serious minutes......... Then we can win a title with Mulder playing serious minutes.

Not sure Mills is the best example. He played 11 minutes a game during that tourney run in 1998. Unless you think 11 minutes a game constitutes serious minutes?

He did play 22 minutes in the Title game loss in '97. Remember that game where Arizona's guards torched us?

Well I consider anything in the rotation and beyond like 5 minutes to be serious minutes.... Non serious would be what Brad and Tai gets..

But 11 minutes should be what Mulder gets and if he's playing well... increase those minutes.

Fair enough. It's fine with me if Mulder plays 25 minutes. I just want us to have the best chance of winning, no matter who plays.

It's safe to say Mulder deserves more clock. For him to be shut out of the UCLA game was a poor decision by Cal. I think he'll get his chances this year and suspect his minutes will go up. He's an underrated athlete with a vertical that is quite impressive. We have some interesting battles for PT with these two and the 4 spot as well.

A couple thoughts:

1. I'm thrilled for Mulder. He was outstanding against Valpo and I hope he continues to make the most of his minutes. I'm still hoping he can produce against legit P5 competition and Cal gives him a little more clock, with his minutes taken from Hawkins/Willis/Briscoe (maybe two minutes off each to get Mulder six). I would love it if he hit a few shots against UNC or UL.

2. Why does there have to be a whipping boy(s) and a bench guy everyone goes all "backup QB syndrome" over almost every single year on this board since Cal's been here?

Whipping boys on the left:

2010 - Miller/Dodson
2011- T. Jones/Hood, Vargas
2012: Teague, T. Jones/Wiltjer
2013: Goodwin/Hood
2014: Everyone was a whipping boy/Hood
2016: Skal, Briscoe/Willis
2017: Briscoe/Mulder
