Mulder makes his point

To be fair, Mulder's role when he's in the game is much simpler. He's just being asked to shoot and be an energy guy and defend. Briscoe is being asked to be the backup point guard, the starting small forward, often assigned to the other teams best player on defense, as well as kind of quarterback the team defense and do a lot of the talking and sort of be the coach on the floor guy.

But Mulder had 0 turnovers and should at least play 30 minutes at pg cuz he's better than Briscoe and Fox.

I like Mulder a lot. But the folks saying he deserves more playing time than Briscoe are totally clueless about basketball or are just trying to stir the pot. Briscoe is one of the best guards in America. UK needs Briscoe on the court, end of discussion. It's not even debatable.

Mulder will get some PT but he is not as good as Briscoe or Fox or Monk and therefore will not play as much. It is as simple as that.
Just because you say he is one of the best guards in the country doesn't make it so. Including his teammates, there were at least 3 better guards on the floor against UCLA. I really wish he were the player you think he is. But he's not. And it's best that he plays to his strengths in limited minutes as he did, for the most part, against Valpo.

Mulder & Brickso are pretty even players. They both bring their own set of skills that can help this team do great things. Both should play around 20 minutes per game.
Briscoe is the worst shooting guard I've seen at UK in close to 50 years of watching the Cats play. Unreal how someone that's supposed to be a five star player can't hit the broad side of a barn into his second year of college. Dickie Beal was bad his first couple of years but Briscoe makes him look like Jerry West.

Briscoe isn't a shooting guard. I hope you are smart enough to realize he is playing out of position.

Well, number one, he isn't a shooting guard, he is a point guard playing small forward. Secondly, that should tell people just how good this guy is, the fact that he doesn't shoot the ball very well, yet 9games into the year, he is averaging 16.3 points per game. As was also noted, Briscoe usually draws the assignment of the best guard of the other team.

Not in reference to the quoted post, but to this thread in general, there is more to basketball than shooting. However, for whatever reason, people seem to think shooting fixes everything. It can masks some things, but over time, even those things come to light. As has been said before, Cal values defense over everything else. And to be honest, basketball is more complex than most are giving it credit for. Just because Mulder does a decent job guarding his man when he is in there, doesn't mean he is adequate at playing it. If he plays for Briscoe, then it is likely that Fox now has to switch to guard the guy Briscoe was guarding, then Monk has to switch to the guy that Fox was guarding so as to give Mulder the weakest of the perimeter players. Meaning that you didn't just get worse at Mulder's position, but actually 3 different positions. Then Mulder does an adequate job on his man and many people claim he isn't as bad as it was claimed to be. Yes he is just as bad, but it is being masked.

Cal plays the regular season for 2 reasons, seeding and preparation for the NCAA Tournament. Fans live game to game, but Cal does not. Most of Cal's decisions revolve around those two things.

As in what?
Briscoe - 24 minutes, 10 points, 1 board, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 TO

Milder - 16 minutes, 9 points, 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 0 TO

Stole this from the first page but this is probably what they are referring to.

Mulder proved before tonight that he's earned playing time. He's been our best shooter and a really good rebounder. His defense isn't bad like some try to say either. His defense was good tonight. That's just an excuse that the Cal super friends throw out there to cover Cal's ***. Cal can be just as big of an idiot at times as anybody else. He's no god or genius and it's about time many realize that.
Thank you. Excellent post..Way too many on this board that think Cal walks on water.

He does walk on water if it's frozen .
I believe Cal is the reason Mulder and most of the players are on the team.

Yeap. Antoine Walker (not that he's a genious or anything) seemed call Cal out on the post game show when he commented that Cal can go 10 or 11 players deep. And then he asked the other commentators if they felt that Cal didn't trust his team. Fact is, IMO, and you all can have YOO, but IMO, Mulder is a better all-around player than Briscoe. Briscoe will be here this year, next year and the year after. He has nothing to offer an NBA team at this point.

And for the last time. Mulder AND SKJ didn't play in the UCLA game because they were shaking off the Bahamin virus effects. You Cal haters need to back off! Several players (5-6) were a step slow due to that virus; it did cost us the game, NOT Cal's coaching, for chrissakes.

if the sickness is true no problem, but it does seem that some players have a shorter lease than others
Mulder needs to be given a shot during the tough games. He may be needed in the NCAA tourney

Couple things...

1. You know it's going to be a good day when you open up a thread and find UMM and Zaytoven teaming up on the same side of an argument.

2. Y'all are some miserable people. Honestly, truly, really, sincerely - you should go cheer for another team. Maybe try the Golden State Warriors.

Because Cal coaches the way he does and he's going to play who he plays.

And we win all the freaking time. Just like we did last night. By a bunch.

He's made his point a few times already, IMO.

This. Frankly, I think Mulder nearly ALWAYS makes his point whenever he gets a chance at extended run. For two years the kid has consistently impressed me. Aside from his shooting skills, he's also been an outstanding rebounder and really has a nose for getting to loose balls.

But it never seems to make much difference for him, it just seems like Cal's never gonna give him much PT no matter what. Guess there's something Cal doesn't like about him that I'm missing.

But what you mean is Mulder is the better shooter. In per minute stats, there are only 2 stats that Mulder is better in, 3pt%, and rebounding. Briscoe is better or even in every other statistical category, with 3 times the assists/min, and twice the steals/min, with a slightly better assist-to-turnover ratio, all the while playing immensely better defense. And while Mulder is the better 3 pt shooter by a wide margin, Briscoe has the better fg%, and both average 1 pt/min.

I am not a Briscoe defender, and I actually like Mulder a lot. I thought he should have played against UCLA as well, but people need to quit acting like playing him would have won the game. Maybe it would have, maybe not, but there is no way to tell, and had we won, nobody would question the decision. I don't think Cal walks on water, but I do believe that he knows more about this team and what he is doing then the general public. It's one thing to question whether a guy should play more or less, but to start acting like your opinion is the solution to a complicated game in which our knowledge of the team is limited is asinine. I think Mulder should play more, but I am not around the team everyday like the coaching staff is. If it were me, I wouldn't start Briscoe, Fox and Monk together, I would replace one of them with either Willis or Mulder, but I haven't won a single college game as a coach or player.

You know we really have no idea why Mulder didn't play against UCLA. Maybe he mouthed off to Cal at practice or did something off the court and Cal benched him for a game. We have no clue what goes on behind the scenes for Cal to make those decisions.

But yeah, lets just assume it's because Cal is toting his 5* players and call him an idiot. It makes us look like we know what we're talking about.

You're last line is right. There's something that Cal doesn't like that you're missing.

Cal runs his team how he runs it, and he sees Mulder every day in practice. The rest of us don't.

I get people liking Mulder and wanting him to play well. We all do. But Cal has earned my trust and respect based on his amazing track record.

Nobody is perfect, except for UPS workers.

Other than shooting the ball I would really like to know what people think Mulder brings to the table that's better than Briscoe.

And Briscoe can get to the hoop.......he's making 58% of his twos this season. He's made 71% of his free throws.

I mean I'm at a loss here.

Sure, we do not really no why; however, this is a message board to talk about the team. So all we know is he did not play - there is nothing that indicates Mulder mouthed off or did something off the court.

All we can do as fans is make inferences based on what we know.

He's patronizing you. Cal doesn't care what I think and I'm well aware of that fact. I just like talking basketball with other fans.

Even though I did coach a 5th grade team to an 11-2 record, I still understand that Cal knows quite a bit more about the game than I do. And he knows the personnel that he recruited and coaches every day about 1000 times better than I do.

But Cal's got his eye on you Terry. He's watching you man!

Haven't looked since last night but before that Mulder was averaging 8 points per game in his very limited minutes. He had also made only six less 3's pointers than Monk while taking 15-20 less 3 point shots than Monk. That is Outstanding production from the SF spot. Add in Mulder's rebounding and he's been great. Go back and Actually watch him on defense against Valpo. He wasn't bad, in fact he was actually good. Some can defend Cal on not playing him all they want but it won't make them or Cal right.

As for comparing Mulder and Briscoe's per minute stats, Briscoe is a pg playing SG while Mulder is a SF/SG. Mulder isn't supposed to have to same number of assists as Briscoe or really even close. Also the only reason Briscoe is shooting a better percentage overall is because 85% of his shots are layups while 90%+ of Mulders are at or behind the 3pt line.

He grabs more offensive boards than Briscoe I'll give you that.

Defensively, Briscoe actually had the better rebounding %.

Which really drives home the point that I think people are underrating. It's easy to assess offense. We can quantify it pretty well. Defense is a bit harder to quantify and I think that's what Cal sees that most aren't. Briscoe is a better defender than Mulder. And that's important to Cal.

I've always noticed Cal shortens the bench in big games. As much as I love and respect Cal I don't understand why he does this. It has led to big losses in big games imo.
especially against UCLA who went seven deep, it seems like you'd try to wear them down with our depth, but what do I know? I ain't no college coach.

FWIW I'm not saying Mulder shouldn't play. It's just when this question is raise it's always at the expense of Briscoe. And I don't think that should be the case.

If anything I see him taking more minutes from guys like Hawkins and maybe even Willis
