Totally agree with that. Players reacted poorly.

Really hope it's just youth, but if they continue to not react well when confronted with adversity or a tough team or **** officials, then you wonder about coaching.

Briscoe becoming the target of in-game redass was a considerable upset imo. It is EARNED NOT GIVEN though.

Versatile bigs have been Cal's Kryptonite and here's why:

When you switch everything on D, you're putting pressure on your bigs to guard the ball. Well, if the other team has bigs that can step out and make shots, you can't help off of them. So, bigs get beat off the dribble, guard comes over to help, kick to big who can shoot. OR don't give help and watch Lonzo Ball take Humphries, Willis, or Bam to the rack.

Also, you get Briscoe blocking out Whateverabu on the glass. Not ideal.

Because we switch, it also allows players to be "soft" on contact from the other team. At some point you have to fight through one to get the matchup that best benefits you. I would say that's something this team will learn from, but Cal has always been content to keep the switching D like it is. It's how UCLA won last year's game.

Glad this game is on 12/3 and not 3/12. This game had the same feel to it as the Wisky FF and IU game last year, knockdown drag out brawl, team got shell shocked and just couldn't recover. Once we lost the lead we just couldn't match their intensity and seemed to be chasing the entire second half.

Much of the bad matchups had nothing to do with switching, I think that's what basketballs are confused about. Bam began countless poss on Ball, and Hawkins/Briscoe began poss guarding Leaf. I mean, WTF?

- First off- props to UCLA. They made shots, were incredibly poised and tougher than us. Their balance was remarkable- no weak links. Welsh killed us again. Holiday was outstanding. Ball is another Shaun Livingston. Leaf is Nick Collison-plus.

- Willis pisses me the F off. If he's too big of puss to take open 3s then he gives us nothing. Dude is one of the best shooters in the country and passes up shots all game.

- Briscoe was awful and worse than that acted like a complete *****. He's supposed to be our leader? Should've gotten T'd up.

- Fox was terrific in the 1st half but not great in the 2nd. Overall, can't get too mad at a freshman PG making a few dumb decisions.

- GET MONK MORE LOOKS. Or just let Humphries take 15-footers at key moments.

- Bam was awesome today and will just keep on getting better and better. Needs some help, though.

- Disappointing effort. Right now, we're nothing but frontrunners. Still it's early. We'll get better.

It gives me a little comfort to hear Willis say that many of the players have been sick with a stomach virus and he was up all night throwing up.
Maybe explains some things?
We never quit, so that is a plus.
Learn and move on.

-Poor finishing around the rim and baffling decision making cost us in the second half.

-Fox needs to shoulder more of the playmaking load over Briscoe. He is much better at setting teammates up. Briscoe's skills fit the glue guy role better.

-Monk is vanilla off the dribble. His handle and creativity aren't good enough to get his own by driving to the rim. A few of his 1v1 attempts in transition were awkward in how futile they were. He's an off the ball weapon that we must properly employ to reap his full potential.

-If Willis going to play, we need to practice running stuff for him so that he has the confidence to shoot. Right now he is deferring way too much to the guards.

-Bam is a beast. He played great today despite shooting 33 FG%. It would have been an all time type performance if he could finish a few of his two footers.

-I know Cal is experimenting with combinations, but some he employs are doomed to fail. That Hawkins-Fox-Bam-Hump-Gabriel lineup he threw out for a few possessions epitomized some of the baffling lineup choices in the first half.

-Defensive rebounding is typically a weak part of a Calipari defense. We weren't totally eviscerated on the glass, but allowing a 37 offensive rebound % is a below average showing.

I think Bam starts out on the guards so he can switch to the better matchup later. It makes sense. But again, it's the philosophy of switching everything that puts him on the guards to start with. Scheming to match the philosophy.

I'm not criticizing Cal at all. He has these super athletic bigs, so why not? Got to get them to the glass though. That's the biggie. It's great having 6'10 contest long jumpers but you need somebody a little bigger than 6'3 boxing out the tall timber underneath.

I'm not worried.

Wish Monk would have gotten a little aggressive earlier when we really needed him, but yeah, he's good.

Seems pretty happy on Twitter with his performance right now, too.

Willis playing scared...and you can't play scared. He gets yanked for doing anything remotely wrong on defense...to be fair he doesn't do a lot on defense. But he has to have a green light on open 3s. We won't realize our potential until he does.

Also, Monk has been to the line only 19 times in 8 games...w/ zero trips in half of them.

TJ Leaf is what we all wish Willis would be.
Not enough can be said about the huge let-down from Willis coming off a strong finish to last year. He looked like he was ready to jump to the next level against Stephen F. Austin....

The 4-spot is a major weakness for us (both offensively and defensively), which is probably one of the biggest surprises of the season so far...

As odd as it sounds, unless he's dunking he doesn't finish strong to the rim on layups. Fades away trying to avoid getting blocked.

Missed a few of those today.

I liked the play we ran where he caught the ball off a curl with a head of steam toward the basket in the lane. More of that. Doesn't have to create off the dribble for himself, but has the defense back peddling.

Willis was apparently up all night puking his guts up. It was bad enough that Cal cancelled shoot around. In general, Willis has been a big disappointment this season, but if that is true, then he gets a pass today. A stomach bug, plus no sleep and I'd have been passed out in the locker room.

He's been passing up open looks all year. Dude's a 45% type shooter and we need him to pull.

How many dudes were sick? We're they all up all night puking? That would explain a lot. Probably not.

-I'd feel bad for Willis if we didn't have 3.25 years of game tape that looked just like today.

-Told the boys before the game I was nervous of a clunker after that performance last week.

-love when teams get back to prevent transition and still get Off boards. We got worked in there.

-think we focused to much on Ball.

-Overall I'm whatever on it. This team needed adversity. Gotta play every possession or you're going to get beat.

-How many jumpers and 3s did Fox/Briscoe miss? Had to be 20ish. Infuriating when a shot is taken without a pass.

ESPN.com did a story on how they disinfected the entire Lodge this week because so many guys had been sick. Willis named four guys. Willis, Hawkins Humphries, and SKJ.

Based on play so far, the front court players in the 8 man rotation appear to be correct. Humphries gets a ton of flack, some deserved, but he was the best rebounder and shot blocker per minute through the first 7 games of the season. SKJ is young and has great potential for growth so I wouldn't be surprised if he did indeed crack the rotation.

The most contested spot in the rotation will come down to Hawkins and Mulder. By the end of the year I actually expect Mulder to consume Hawkins' minutes. He has so much more upside than Hawkins on offense.

Mulder looked great last week. Better than he ever has as a Cat. Today: DNP - Coach's decision. Cal is gonna ride or die with Hawkins. Again, we scored 92 points. We got offense.

Not worried about Willis. Expect the Dad/Girlfriend intervention at Christmas. He will be fine. Just trying to get his mind wrapped around some things.
