DeAndre Ayton Enamored With UK

I don't understand the reasoning here.. Has a top recruit ever committed to a school he had no offer to? Ayton is the #1 player in his class and is a teenager. I can't see a kid in his position taking a shot at his own pride like that.
Didn't OJ Mayo do it ?

dont believe it.

i'll bet ben roberts is being played here. everyone knows he is a reporter...he will write what he is told by. recruits inner circles use that to their advantage. roberts really isnt an insider.

i love ayton, he is the best player in the class by far. but if he was THAT enamored with uk...call cal and commit to him.

Like with Duval, Cal isn't going to let his hand down until he's assured that both players background grades with those wantabee high schools are enough to keep them out of trouble and on the playing floor. He will not make that mistake.

Plus by reading several articles with him, it looks like he would like to play forward, not center so Bamba will not be an issue if Ayton comes.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree...you are just trying to look for nitpick issue because they didn't win a title.

Too many example just with UK team, which btw is usually a GIANT sized team that you seem to fail to realize (probably think all college team is that enormous).

Last year's team was probably one of the smallest team we had...hell 2012 team was large team too. MKG killed spacing at the 3, jones and davis was solid spacer, neither should shoot the 3. Jones kept on shooting it tho, but he became much better in second year about selection.

The key is to just surround them with right players. That team that went to national title with Twins as freshman, was HUGE team as well. They have absolutely 0 spacing. Twins can't shoot, young was terrible, randle sucked, and johnson couldn't shot unless he was below the rim...yet they made it to the final.

Basically what you want is get Bamba and Ayton, and surround him with player like Trae Young...and one more decent shooter. You'll going to kill every team out there. Bamba and Ayton isn't anything like Skal either. (Well, to be honest, i don't really know for sure). They are physical guys who can control the paint with their length, athleticism, strength, and size. (maybe not Bamba yet, but he'll get there).

People on here seems to criticize and over emphasis on shooting, because most title contending team we had was huge team that for some reason did not have single shooter, exception of 2012 which had Lamb.

And yes, you can have undersized player be great rebounder because of their tenacity, but i rather have big guys with length have that same tenacity, and we can control the possession of basketball.
Terrence Jones, Anthony Davis, Julius Randle, Karl Towns (and Trey Lyles, though he played a ton of 3). And Willie Cauley Stein on the defensive end.

No, I haven't somehow missed the fact that UK has had huge teams (like the "bigger than all but one NBA roster" stat that showed up pretty much EVERY game in 14-15). What you seem to miss is that all of those had guys playing the 4 and/or 5 with far more versatile offensive skills than Ayton and Bamba. And in WCS's case, more versatile defensive skills.

And show me the teams that are winning, college or NBA, by dominating the paint with size? The trend has been in the opposite direction.

Ayton or Bamba would make for a tremendous anchor on the interior. Together, they're very likely to make for a clogged toilet offense. I actually think they know this (no matter how much Ayton wants to call himself a forward), so I think it's highly unlikely they go to the same school.

I actually would like to see Bamba/Ayton together not only from the perspective of what they offer on a defensive level, but also from what they would offer Kentucky from a continued relevancy level (a machine that Cal has attempted to monopolize). I think acquiring real talent, even at the expense of a few points per game on offense, is really the key. Landing as many potential max NBA players as possible is really the name of the game now, and Ayton/Bamba are both representative of that type of potential. Add in the fact that acquiring both of them would come at the expense of Duke's efforts, and it would be enormous (although I think it would be highly unlikely to land both).

It's an arms race at this point. Cal's made his goals clear: he wants 10-12 future NBA All-Stars and he wants a 40-0 team. Landing two of the top three amateur prospects in the world puts him a few steps closer to both of his stated goals.

Yeah the next UK coach has no choice. He will have to recruit like Cal or else be shown the door. Cal is like post WW2 America. You can't go back.

gotta disagree..........Bowie & Turpin played together without any problems. See no reason that Bamba & Ayton couldn't do the same. Ayton prefers to play outside & Bamba inside

In a perfect world Ayton and Bamba both decide on Kentucky and Cal figures out how to play both guys in the same lineup without clogging the paint too much. Ayton is listed as a forward, but i do agree the kid looks like a center in college to me. I don't think he has the shooting touch to step outside the paint and knock down a few jumpshots. He still has plenty of time to learn this skillset so who knows what this kid will look like once he's starting his freshman career at Kentucky or pro somewhere over-seas. Bamba is a center and looks nothing like a power forward. Bamba doesn't have a shooting touch. If you put Bamba inside, you have a team that has a man inside that can control the entire game with elite defense. The funny thing is, while most talk about how awesome Ayton's offensive game, it's not like the kid is bad on defense. Ayton will be an elite defender himself once he gets used to the pace of the college game. I know if both guys decide on the same school, it could cause future spacing problems for the team. The thing is, recruiting and starting both of these kids is too much fun to think about to consider the spacing problem. Both kids can be elite defenders and i'm sure Cal is thinking about this and is the reason he can't just leave Ayton alone and let him go elsewhere. If i'm Cal and both kids want to play for Kentucky, i take both and figure out the best way to play with them in the same lineup and i take the chance.

There were more problems with Bowie and Turpin together than people remember...although the obvious issue with that team was the guard play. Different era, though, with no shot clock and no 3 pointer. A huge percentage of shots (from everyone, not just UK) came within 15 feet of the basket. Not the case today.

If Bamba and Ayton are willing to play at the same school, you probably can't pass on it. But I think people would fool themselves about it- there'd be this level of expectation , "oh my God, we're going to kill everyone", that wouldn't translate onto the court.

I don't think you can underestimate the importance of guys 6'8" and up who have some legitimate perimeter skills. Not necessarily shooting (though that helps), but an ability to move, laterally and up and down the court, the ability to keep the ball moving, the ability to put the ball down for at least a few dribbles to drive to the hoop. If you get the rare bird like that, then you can more effectively field a huge lineup. If you get a guy like Ayton, who has some shooting touch, and a tiny little bit of ballhandling skill, you're still better off utilizing that in the middle, as opposed to pairing him with another giant body who has even less skill.

When AD first arrived at UK, we had people on here wondering if he'd play the 3, and we had people thinking that he was just too skinny to possibly play center. But he did, superlatively. And going back nearly 30 years now, I can't think of a single time when I thought (or reality showed) "oh, UK would be so much better if they went bigger". The opposite has often been the case.

This can't be right, can it? How many times have we had Ku posters on here telling us Kansas is where the kid's heart is. Ayton probably hasn't heard the latest recruiting scoop from Ku insiders yet about Ku leading for his services. I'll trust Cal knows what he is doing when it comes to recruiting. How much would it suck if it turns out this kid gets to play college basketball and ends up playing elsewhere? This kid is the type of talent that can turn a class from good to very good. If it's possible the kid plays college basketball, let's hope it's Kentucky. Looking at the kid, he has the look of a Cal coached big man. Just imagine a frontcourt of Bamba and Ayton. As many good frontcourts we have had while Cal is here, that could turn out to be the very best frontcourt yet.

"Sources close to Ayton..."... come on. That article is pure speculation. I would even venture to say there are no "sources" at all.

It never works.

Defensively, there are some advantages (sometimes). But people have fantasies about these giant lineups that never translate to any kind of reality. Spacing gets screwed, perimeter shooting is usually an issue, ball movement tends to suffer, and driving lanes tend to shrink because teams pack the lane with defenders. And the NBA, in particular, is showing that it's not as hard for guys 6 inches shorter to guard the paint as it is for the guys who are 6 inches taller to chase people out to the 3 point line. The rebounding advantage is overstated, because rebounding is about more than just height (ask Skal).

It only works if one of the big guys has serious perimeter skills (ala Dirk Nowitzki, or someone like him), and no matter how much Ayton might think he does, he doesn't. He's a center. Bamba's a center. Wendell Carter is a center.

I think people are actually getting over enamored with this small ball play of the Warriors. Not speaking towards you specifically or your comment at all, cause I understand your point. I'm just talking in general and the way others are thinking nowadays but it seems like everyone acts as though that way of playing is taking over basketball. In reality, there has had 1 team that has succeeded at a high level playing that way. Also, the 1 title that was won playing that way was against a Cleveland team who lost 2 of their star starting players. So, I'm not confident that the NBA has shown us that team 6 inches shorter can be more successful. You also MUST have great shooters to win that way. And several of them! Without the elite shooters, you're in trouble. We see what lineup won the title, a much more traditional bigger lineup that we are used to seeing in the NBA.

I think the stretch forward and the big men who can move to the perimeter are more of a game changing type skill set. The more guys who can pull the defense out and spread the floor to open space is going to change the way the game is played, IMO. Spacing the game out to a more freestyle game is exciting to watch and exciting to see come to the NBA. I think it's more of a European game and I think we will see more of it in the NBA. Especially after the Olympics and seeing how much trouble it game our Olympic players. Just my opinion though.

But it wasn't really a traditional big lineup for the Cavs. You didn't see Mozgov and Thompson (or Mozgov and Love) out there at the 5 and 4. You saw Thompson and Love, or Thompson and Jefferson, or Love and Jefferson. Of the 7 guys who played significant time for the Cavs in Finals, 5 were under 6'10". And with Love, they have a 6'10" guy who's a legit perimeter shooting threat.

Before the Cavs, you had the Warriors, the Spurs running a lot of lineups in 2014 with Leonard at the 4, or Boris Diaw playing center, and the Heat playing a ton of smaller lineups with LeBron at the 4 in 12 and 13.

It's also been the trend in college. Villanova won with a 6'6" guy at the 4. So did Duke in 2015. 2014 UConn mainly used 6'8", 210 lbs DeAndre Daniels. UL had a more traditional 4 in terms of style of play, but Behanan (or Harrell) also wasn't some 7 footer.

De Aaron Fox and Malik Monk are going to be a great freshman starting back court for Kansa...oh wait. ;)

I'm big enough to admit I was wrong, but I gave up on Fox the minute Kentucky offered and he started doing cartwheels. Monk I thought we still had a legit shot of landing.

No...typical KU fan says "but Matt Scott says says KU leads".

Matt is the ultimate optimist about who KU is going to get every year. Everyone hammers him when it doesn't work out then they fall for the same thing the next class. 'Rinse....repeat'

BTW....I like Matt but he's too positive...needs some realism to be trusted. UK fans couldn't follow someone like that.

Bowie and Turpin were a nightmare for Joe B Hall, if we played the quick 3-4 guys than we were in bad shape. UNC one year in 81, Geoergetown, Auburn and Ga ULwere tough outs.

UK had 6'5-6 guys such as Hord, Hurt, Verderber, Tillman.
Joe Hall and Leonard Hamilton all put major emphasis on the 6'8-9 jumping jacks that were killing us and giving our big guys fits, the first of these we landed was Kenny Walker, we lost Billy Thompson and our asst. coach to UL from Laurel Ms. We were getting Bearup and UNC and Maryland were getting Len Bias and Perkins and Worthy.

With Thompson, Love, and Lebron starting, that's a pretty traditional lineup. Height isn't the only factor. To your point, I never said that the Warriora were the only team going with the small lineup. UI was just saying that they've been the only ones to have significant success and that's because you have to have elite shooters for it to work. Villanova went on a historically great shooting run to win the tournament. Without that type of run, they don't win the title. So, I wasn't disagreeing with you at all. I was simply saying that I think people are too enamored with the idwa. It's not taking over the NBA or college ball like some would believe. You have to have the elite shooters for it to work and elite shooters are rare. That's all.

The shiver had very little info they just pretended they were landing everyone and when they finally landed a few that's all the "insiders" focused on. Once the shiver landed at 24/7 any real info they had dried up. Much like gotigers and Brooks Hansen for Memphis. Many rules to follow once you go that route. It's basically selling out your subscribers for financial gain. They are not allowed to divulge the info in the same manner at 24/7

I was a long time poster on the shiver as well as TBK and GoTigers. Back when inside information was real. Nowadays it's all just a crapshoot. Matt at the shiver, much like Matt Jones, Brooks Hansen, and the UNC guy (can't remember his name) don't really have inside "recruiting" info pertaining to the families anymore. Matt jones never really did anyway. They've got some program connections. Far different things. I miss the old days.

This is an interesting discussion, so don't worry about the "argument" thing. My point about not really wanting Bamba and Ayton together isn't even really talking about a preference for smallball. Put Ayton or Bamba with Julius Randle, Terrence Jones, or even Patrick Patterson, and you have a perfectly viable traditional lineup with enormous size. But putting Ayton with Bamba wouldn't really be a traditional lineup, it would be playing 2 centers and calling one of them a 4.

It's been a theme in basketball to project bigger guys into the lowest possible position than they might possibly play. It's the idea of "how cool would it be if this 7 foot guy could play small forward, or this 6'9" guy could be a 2 guard, or this 6'7" guy could play the point?" Which is a large part of why no one seems to want to be listed as a center (7'4" guy who can't dribble, pass, or shoot- "I'm a 4").

What a lot of teams seem to be discovering is that there's a ton of utility in taking things the other direction- "what's the HIGHEST possible position this guy can play, how much of a skill advantage does that give us versus how much physical superiority we're giving up?". The best-case is that you get both- think LeBron, think Kevin Durant- but that's not practical in most cases, because those guys are unicorns. A lot of teams seem to be finding that the skill advantage you can gain with smaller lineups, or more of a focus on skills than pure size, outweighs the physical advantages of pure size and athleticism.

Have to admit this entire thread is pretty funny now. All the debates, arguments, the thread title, etc. Now of course I see the new threads on how we didn't want him, he will never play, etc. Actually, I hope that proves true but at Zona the NCAA will likely be fine with it, at UK, he would not have approved.

Unless they have been deleted, I see no such threads. I see one that was started to say it shows the experts don't know anything. And one post that said Cal wasn't after him that hard (proven by Ayton's own comments) because of eligibility issues. Both sentiments expressed many times well before this announcement. But of course every time something like this happens, we get comments like this. Calling us out for not really wanted the guy, he was never really any good, won't play, etc.

You must not know the same KU fans I do. We're always the pessimistic type and note that we never lead for much of anybody except a No. 39 ranked SF (Ch. Brown) and No. 90-some ranked PF (Gak).

If you are referring to the thread "What the Ayton announcement proves", then no I did not see a single post saying we didn't want him. One said Cal was leery of the eligibility issues, one agreed with that post, and another one said he was focusing on Bamba more than Ayton because of the eligibility thing. To me, that is not UK fans saying we didn't want him. As for not playing, there were tons of posts that said that long before the announcement. I just see the same thing over and over. As soon as we don't get someone, posts pop up saying UK fans are already saying we didn't really want him, etc.

Hmmm, let's see: 1.Sandy Bell and company are the reason that Ayton is not coming to UK. Arizona did not have another big that interested and decided to take a chance. UK is in on several others and decided it is not worth the risk of running them off with a commitment that may not be eligible.
2.actually it proves uk can cal is the best staff in the business. uk didnt and wasnt recruiting ayton...reason...no one thinks he is actually going to play college ball. where as ku has been recruiting him forever. and of course sean miller who wants to be associated with elite players...even if they dont actually play a game. see terrance ferguson
3.Cal is wanting bamba bad, if he is holding off a commitment from Richards and not even sniffing ayton then he must be very confident
4.Cal is wanting bamba bad, if he is holding off a commitment from Richards and not even sniffing ayton then he must be very confident...(or 3 and a half)
I am confident you don't have a clue.
5.Not sure he'll play a minute of college basketball.
6.If Cal wanted this kid he would be at UK IMO . He doesn't want to deal with the uncertainty . Bamba and Richards will do .

There are many more.

Again, all eligibility issues and NOT "we didn't want him". Am I speaking chinese or something? You implied UK didn't want Ayton. I still haven't read any comments initmating that.

There are many more solid points? I don't understand what you're bitching about. This isn't a UK Fan narrative that Calipari, at best, was slow-playing Ayton. Dude said it himself.

Some of us have actually gotten a feel for Cal's recruiting by now. Not all offers are the same. For some reason, he doesn't go after some guys hard and throws the kitchen sink at others. It's pretty obvious his priorities in this class:

Bamba
Knox
Diallo
Young
Washington
Walker
