I don't disagree that next year's team is going to be a great collection of individual talent, though who are going to be the shooters that make it a dangerous team to win it all. If there's one knock against Cal since he's been here in my opinion, it's that he hasn't been able to surround a lot of his team's with superior individual talent with some maybe lower rated shooters to make them a better TEAM. Walls/cuz team was the classic example of this. I know they shot way below even their average against wva, though it is what it is. Now, looking at next year's team, I am afraid of the same thing. Folks, there is nothing I have seen or read about Gabriel that makes me think he is going to be a credible outside threat. Other than monk/fox who are expected to be average shooters who else is there. The way Cal coaches I am afraid Willis doesn't get much pt. The 3 spot needs to be able to score from the outside and the 4 needs to also. Just worried!

Nah. Even Cal won't be able to keep him off the floor.
Yep Willis will be the main shooter on next year's squad . Monk will make an average of 2-3 a game as well. Briscoe I think will return to his HS form and make 35% which keeps people honest and I think Fox will shoot around that as well. But the big thing next year we will have guys that can just destroy you off the bounce like Briscoe , Monk ,Fox , and even guys like Gabriel and Bam can drive for guys their size.

Gabriel isn't a bad shooter at all. Fox, Monk, Willis, Gabriel, & Bam will be our most potent lineup IMO.

First let me say I hope and pray you are right but that being said. [roll]

Are there rainbow unicorns and strawberry ice cream sky scrapers in your world??? From 13% to 35% in one off season??? That's something that should be a huge surprise, not something you expect.

there is a difference between optimism and delusion and you having been crossing that line a lot lately

Fox, Monk, Willis, Hawk and an improved Briscoe shot that was coming around end of last year. Gabriel will make a few as well. I'm not understanding everyone thinking we aren't gonna be able to shoot next year. I don't think it will be a problem.

He thinks every single UK fan is a neanderthal, other than him. He never lets up.

not neanderthal...just stupid. i mean look at the topic itself. its april 7th, we dont even know what the roster will look like next year...and we have folks complaining about the season already. oh i mean "critiquing". do we know for certain shooting is a problem right now by the way?

but lets say it is...ok great...we need more shooters....now what? what are the next steps to solve this problem (if it even is one)...please, all ears.

and to bring up the wall team...dumb....team lost 3 freakin games all year. give me a team like that each and every year please!

"just worried" in april....get a life

Hawkins and Briscoe are not going to be consistent credible outside scoring threats that pressure defenses, not sure why that's so hard to understand

I don't remember his name, but didn't Tennessee have a player improve his % by 20 pts this year over last? I'm not saying it will happen, but it's not totally crazy. Especially since Briscoe was a decent shooter in high school. He struggled as a freshman. If he can only improve enough to keep defenses honest, I'd be happy.

We had two, and Willis who was not on the floor a majority of the time
We had 3 shooters on this years team, 2 are now gone, 1 is coming in, you must have Willis and Monk on the floor. Unless on of the PF coming in can hit the medium range jumper, Cats could struggle at times !!

no. Moore went from 18% to 31%. But it is skewed because he went from making 6 threes to just 18 threes.

That type of improvement would still only be 1 made three every other game..... Not enough to keep defenders honest.

Take a chill pill and relax. Cal knows what he's doing. If Cal thinks we'll be fine, we'll be fine.

OK. I coulda swore I remember ESPN hyping a higher percentage than like and making out like he hit multiple threes per game. I don't really keep up with what other teams do, so I took there "word" for it. Big mistake I guess.

Why is shooting almost exclusively the worry of our fans? Occasionally someone will mention rebounding or needing a rim protector but the fetish with shooters just induces eye rolls at this point.

You never stop calling UK fans stupid. What's in it for you, other than pumping up your fragile ego?

It amazes me how UK fans blow up other players as shooters and talk down UK's players in that category. Doesn't matter who Cal recruits, it's never enough. There will always be one aspect people will point to as to why we haven't won more titles. We had 2 guys shoot over 40% from 3 this year, but Cal doesn't get shooters. Booker was a great shooter until a late season slump. Lamb was close to 50 percent for 2 seasons, but Cal doesn't recruit shooters. Whatever. Oh, yeah, and Wiltjer.

Pretty much agree with this, but...wouldn't it be nice to have one season where the 3 point shot is a weapon, not a question mark? UK actually did have that this year for a while, when Willis was starting before he got hurt (and Murray was going nuts), but you have to admit it's been pretty rare. Really only 10-11, and that was mainly out of necessity.

Past 10 NCAA champs have made:

8.7, 7.3, 7.2, 5.8, 5.6, 5.7, 7.6, 6.9, 6.8, and 7.4 threes per game.

That's UK 11-12 at 5.6. Cal's had 1 team average over 7, 4 teams average below 6.

The obvious question is what kind of sacrifices you make to get shooting? You obviously need to look at the game as a whole, with perimeter shooting as just one element, but given how good the offense looked this year with a just a little more oomph from 3 than normal, it would be nice to see something like that again, except with some legit interior play.

Especially since Briscoe was a decent shooter in high school.

Be nice if Briscoe would go back to weighing 203 pounds like he did in high school. Unfortunately, he's packed on a lot of weight, and he's going to pack on more. Ridiculous for a player at his height and position to push 220 like he does, and undoubtedly this is the major factor for why his shooting results are different from his high school days. Mechanics are all different, bad. His height to weight ratio is pure flub to NBA general mgr's when looking at college guard / wing talent.

We have four starters set in stone:

Fox
Monk
Briscoe (I think he will be back)
Bam

The fifth starter will be between Willis and Gabriel. If Gabriel can shoot the 15-20 foot jumper, then he starts. If he struggles to shoot, it has to be Willis (to offset Briscoe's lack of shooting).

We have to have a shooter at the four with Briscoe on the floor.

Below are the minutes per game each of the last five national champs had outside shooting threats on the floor. This is out of a max 200 minutes per game. See the trend! Some of you may not call Siva an outside threat, though he did have to be guarded. Also, the McCoombs/Smith threats maybe be slightly overstated, though they could hit an outside shot. I think the metrics prove out.

Needless to say, the ability for defenses to sag off briscoe was lethal for us, among other things, though it was HUGE. That's probably why Cal kept telling him to shoot it.

Fox guess of 32?
Monk guess of 32?
Willis guess of 20?

Doesn't bode well......even if Willis MPG are pumped up. this is why i am concerned. Hopefully someone surprises, or our bigs can overcompensate for it
