But over all the country this is a problem, officials are inconsistent, emotional calling( which is why most home games are nightmares for the visitors), and ego maniacs. I have a brother in law and nephew who officiate and they tell me all the time that there is always ONE guy who thinks he's God and wants to make all the calls. In college it's seems like every game has one or two of these type officials.
I wonder if the position attracts certain personality types that like to have control . Some get into police work for that , pedophiles like to be teachers and priests . Not saying everyone in those proffesions fits that description but those that do seek these types of jobs .

We've really been hosed by refs this year. I can think of a couple of games every year where it seems pretty blatant, Arkansas and UNC on the road a cpl of years ago, but this year it's every single road game, and we're not getting the same whistle at home.
Just wait. It's coming.
The game at Vanderbilt is going to take the award home for the worst officiated game this season.
Good thing our guys are used to it.

Absolutely! Go to a local high school association meeting and you will see quite few that officiate just for the authority alone. However, there are some great guys there too that make great officials.

Greene had his moments throughout this game too but the spotlight was fed on Sirmons. They all 3 missed Murray getting tackled and then rolled over on. That's why Cal lost it and I don't blame the guy. Awful awful awful

True about Greene, but unlike Sirmons, Tony is just going to have a few questionable calls every game because he is who is, while Sirmons is intentionally bad.

And Tony has always given Cal a pretty long rope.

Actually the refs during the UT were wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy worse. I stand by my statement that the refs during the game at UT were on the fix or something as I watched it 3 times and I counted 11 phantom fouls called and a bunch of other nonsense.

ABSOLUTELY!

He left along with several others a few years ago, what was the reason? Eades,Stuart, Smith,Crawford were a few others that left for the big 12

No, this was worse than in Knoxville. The whilstle was tight for us and non existant for them. I don't complain often, but I'm proud of our guys for winning so big against at least 6. The UT game the Vols just got hot and UK quit after 10 minutes.

After watching Doug Sirmons do his thing today and watching Kansas-Oklahoma/A&M-LSU, I've got a few thoughts. Is there a sport in America where referees have a bigger impact? I honestly can't think of a single one. The inconsistency in calls, the fact you can mug a guy on one end and have a ticky tack foul called 30 seconds later on the other team, the 8 minute delays on replays that should only be 2 minutes maximum, etc. These guys want their wives to see their ugly mugs on tv every chance they get. They don't officiate games as much as they make themselves apart of it. IMO the NCAA should model their refs after the NBA. Watch an NBA game and you'll actually see some resemblance of flow. CBB is foul, foul, whistle, commercial, foul. It's way past time for change.

They can make or break a team mentally....and it then affects their physical play.

I tell you its strange, some of the rules. Briscoe just bounces the ball and it does not really affect anybody and gets a technical from some insensitive ref.........but south carolina takes the ball and throws it as hard as they can at our player in order to save the possession from going out of bounds with the ball. I know its just part of the game....but if you think about it...some people would see it as a technical also.

The ref in the KU/Oklahoma game today actually stopped a KU fast break to tell two players to stop starring at each other.
But honestly someone could put together a 1 hour highlight video of the bad calls in UK's league games this year.
An hour may not be enough time actually.

Football. They only need to make a couple bad calls to change the outcome. For instance, a team driving for a go ahead touchdown in the 4th quarter and on third down a bogus pass interference call can make a break a game for a team.

Couldn't agree more. Could you imagine a college football game with 50-60 penalties a game? But we've become immune to it in basketball. And I agree 100% about how much they can effect the outcome. Thank god jay bilas was jumping on them today in the ku/ok game. Way too often announcers don't say a word on obviously terrible calls. The first step is the national media pointing out what a huge issue it is.

I don't mind letting them play or closely called games if they're consistent. As the op pointed out it is very rare to see a consistently called game

Just so glad to see Cal fight for the kids. Now maybe some light will come onto the situation. Cal is a Hall of Fame coach. Why not the same respect for him other Hall of Famers get?

I agree the ego driven seem to be the main candidates. The T given to the SC player for smacking the ball should have been a strong warning nothing more. Home cooking has been around forever but now they make bad calls on both teams the whole game. There are very few good officials today which really destroys the game today.

This is what needs to be done. A very large multi-sourced barrage of video evidence would eventually have an effect. Send obvious errors, stupid errors, etc to the conference offices, to the media, etc. There is a thread on the board that recommends calling and that would be worthless. Solid evidence in the form of video, backed with the applicable rule would have an impact.

At some point people need to ask why with football and both basketball teams, why isn't our AD going to bat for us with the sec??

Briscoe deserved that T.

Do you not remember the Jorts peg vs. Ohio State? I agree, the reffing was BS but come on now. You sound like a damn card fan.

Said it will be enforced at the Tenn game Thu by allowing the Vols to shoot tech free throws to open the game.

Just for good measure, he has already ejected Briscoe for that game.

What about the personal foul that Sirmons called on Briscoe about a minute later from the other side of the floor?

Mods, can we get all troll threads merged as well from now on? Ulismyman has 17 threads a week with 2 sentences total but all talk about officiating deserves 1 massive thread?

Case in point was Humphries at the 9:38 mark in the first half. He goes up for a rebound, the SC guy grabs it a split second later and yanks it from him, and Humphries gets a foul.
That one bothered me. And it wasn't called that way on the other end of the floor. Go Cats!!

Question, I know you have 1 lead official on each crew. Why does he not take a official to the side and tell him he's making a lot of bad calls or to let them play and not have a chip on shoulder

Worst officiating of the year so far.

I didn't think I could see a more poorly officiated game than the UK Kansas game. But that jackass Doug Sirmons proved me wrong. It was 6 on 5 today. Unbelievable. And we still kicked USCs ***.

Yup. Officiating in the NFL and college football is dreadful too. I honestly don't know of a single sport where officiating is fair. Officiating has really fallen off the last 3-4 years in all sports. Its really sad and its making games nearly unwatchable.

It was CBG that Tony constantly had the chapped red *** for. I guess Tony isn't that bad after all. [winking]

Yes, referees are calling more fouls this year. And that is a very, very good thing. Unless you're a fan of 53-41 national title games, or classic 2000's Big East-style wrestling matches where the teams might combine to hit 40 FG's total (if they're lucky).

I've got news for all the "refs need to stay out of it" people: The level of fouls being called now is NOT the aberration. The aberration was what was going on for over a decade before, when fouls called per game were at an all-time low. Want an example? UK was averaging 21 fouls per game prior to today, and UK's opponents were averaging 20.3. This is the first time since 1997 that UK is being called for over 20 fouls per game. But if you go back, UK averaged over 20 fouls per game 8 years in a row from 72-73 through 80-81, and then every season that Pitino coached.

More fouls called generally comes from the game being played at a faster pace- something the VAST majority of basketball fans enjoy watching. It may come off as ticky-tack and inconsistent right now, and some of it certainly is, but unless you enjoy basketball as a wrestling match, it's very much a necessary corrective for the way the game got away from the refs for 10-20 years, and turned into "football on the hardwood".

My problem is the inconsistency. What's a foul on one end isn't a foul on the other. What's not a foul in the first half is a foul in the second half. Its horribly inconsistent.

My other problem is the blatant home court advantage in the SEC. They even mentioned today that the sec has by far the best home court advantages in the country. Its these terribly inconsistent sec refs that give way to much leeway to the home teams.

I'm all for calling more fouls and scoring is noticeably up this year, but the ******** I mentioned above is infuriating and makes some games hard to watch.

The calls at today's game had nothing to do with "Freedom of Motion".

SC players lowered their heads and drove right into our players, with hands straight up.

We rebounded a ball which was yanked out of our hands and yet we received the foul.

Carerra travelled multiple times, no call.

Not calling over the back has nothing to do with Freedom of Motion.

These were not ticky tack, two hands on a dribbler, type calls today.

These were bad on one end and not necessarily called much at all on the other.
