When he shoots a jumper and misses, MOST of these are due to him drifting to the left when he shoots. I can't remember if he has made any while doing this, but it is obvious this will be a great deterrence to his making these shots.
When he goes up straight, shots have a very good chance of going in.

Pointed that to my daughter, who, plays basketball, yesterday as well....trying to teach her to "gather herself" before taking the shot or to not take it

Catch and shoot, no hesitation is the only way to teach. As a kids gets older, no time to gather her self as you call it. Find a shooting coach who uses a shooting gun, and you can get in 300 shots pretty quick.

Willis and everybody else needs to follow their shot. I would love to see that happen once.
So true and good point. Was just thinking the same. Generally a good shooter knows when it could be a miss and does follow the shot. I reckon one reason to not to is breaking to get back on defensive end of court.

Todays game is more of a transition style game vs a half court, slow it down style. As TexKat said, they are getting back on D, not all, but most. Larry Bird was the best at following his shot through out his career.

Did you ever see Frank Ramsey when he was with the Celtics. I thought he was the best of his time. Prejudice may have influenced my opinion.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Before my time, but that era must have been awesome to be part of. How can you go wrong with a Ky homeboy, and the Celtics.

willis has certainly got the "no hesitation" part down pat at the free throw line. i don't think i've ever seen a player shoot so quickly at the ft line.

Willis has an UGLY shot, never think he is going to make it, i know his perecentage is decent but it is ugly. Murrays at least looks good always, regardless if he is drifting or not.

Jeff Sheppard and Padgett drifted as well. Willis will be ok. His confidence just needs to stay up

As long as Willis is rebounding at the clip he has been (only had 5 the other night, but his rebound/min rate was still higher than Poy, who led the team in rebounding), the team needs him on the floor. His defense is much improved (meaning the effort more than anything) and him being on the floor opens things up for the rest of the offense, making it easier for the guards and Poy to operate. Whether people agree with it or not, Willis needs to be on the floor for this team to be at its best. The fact that he shoots 40% from 3 and 90+% from the line doesn't hurt either.

That seems to be a lost art in todays game, I don't think they teach that anymore, instead the want the shooter to fall back and protect the goal in case they missed it?????
But they do not do that. They literally stand there and watch.

Girls have to gather themselves. They are too weak to just catch and shoot. Especially elementary age. Or Jr. high or high school.

Is it just me or does Willis' shot look different this year? I don't remember it looking so awkward in the past.

With limited highlights to watch from prior years, it looks the same to me as it always has. It does look a little unorthodox compared to 'sweet' jump shooters like Booker. But like an unorthodox golf swing, as long as it's all good at impact (shot release), it can still be effective.

I will say there are some times when it looks like the ball is almost slipping out of his hands as he is shooting.

Okay. I just thought it was a bit more fluid in the past. This year he seems to have some weird little hop before he shoots and the whole process seems very slow and awkward. Almost looks like he has a twitch before he shoots. haha

He shoots for a pretty solid average this year, but I definitely don't have a whole lot of confidence that it is going in when he releases it.

Willis doesn't have a slow release. The guy can get it off quickly. He may not look conventional when he shoots, but I have a lot of faith it will go in. As others have said, it doesn't have to look pretty to be very effective.

I suppose what throws me off and what I consider slow is that he looks like he sometimes does a little hop before he shoots, and sometimes he seems like he thinks about it rather than just shooting it. For some reason in years past I never noticed it and always felt like he had a really good chance of making it, but just something seems different this year. I know he can shoot and does well. It's probably just me. haha
