Most people in this thread tho are focusing on the 47 free throws that KU attempted. That has nothing to do when them fouling us. But honestly can you say we were that aggressive in getting to the hoop to even get fouled? I mean besides Briscoe? Ulis got into the lane alot in the first half but alot of his shots were jumpers. Then in the second half, even Tyler couldn't get into the lane. We just weren't as aggressive as they were.

Go on the latest CBS podcast (the one right prior to the game), and listen to what Norlander said about when he interviewed a bunch of D1 coaches re: rival arenas. As you might know, he's been doing a series, asking them off the record about various topics that they don't usually get to discuss in public. They listed a number of places that were worst to play, and AFH of course made the top of the list, next to Cameron, Rupp, along with a couple others (Iowa State, maybe?), anyways, they also were very adamant apparently that AFH had by far the most one-sided reffing on average.

He said that a bunch of coaches went out of their way to put that point of emphasis there, completely unprompted. Yes, I know that all schools, especially big brand ones, get home cooking, but according to the private opinions of the exact group of people who would know best, AFH is worse than the rest.

And no, Cal and Poy nor anybody on our current team is the type to blame the refs after a game in a public interview.

But hey, good game. It was lots of fun to watch, and we had our chances regardless of all that other stuff.

Let's just say I wouldn't be at all upset to draw you guys as a 2 seed in the tourney.

I had two awesome UK fans sitting behind me at the game Saturday who were great ambassadors of the UK fan base. Very knowledgeable. Very polite. We had a great time talking throughout the game. I assume the vast majority of UK fans are similar to those two.

I agree with most of your points, but to act like a team who shot almost 25 more free throws against us didn't have any effect on the game is pure nonsense. They scored damn near a third of their points from the free throw line. That's ridiculous.

Briscoe did not go to the line ONCE in the entire 2nd half. He did get there twice in OT, missing all three shots but by then KU was not playing their triangle and two any more.

Thought you were full of crap with this comment, so I just checked the replay. So far I am 10 mins into the second half and Briscoe has had two drives to the basket, and Ulis has had one. Maybe know what you are talking about next time.

Brian, you are right on with this.. I can also point to like 5 other plays minimum where there was a blatant foul on Kansas. I feel it was a testament to this ball club how close they stayed with Kansas in their great environment. I think we are going to be SCARY this year come tournament time. GO CATS!!

The whistle may have been lopsided, for me it is hard to say objectively due to blue tinted glasses. However, it's not like we didn't have chances. Lee deserved every foul he got as did Skal. It did seem like KU got more leeway on the defensive end but we still could have won.

I'm not saying that we didn't deserve most of the fouls we got, but rather that Kansas deserved some that they did not get called for. We got called for over the backs, handchecks, and pushing underneath whereas KU got away with most of those.

well you mean Skal and Lee... those two are foul machines. Poy is only averaging 3.2 fouls per game and Willis is 1.5 fouls per game.

But let's be honest......we did take 22 free throws. If we didn't send KU to the line an astounding 47 times, does anyone really even say anything about our number?

The free throw rate n that game was 35.5%, which is not really all that far off from our average on the year of 38.6%. So in reality we got to the line about as much as we normally do. The biggest problem I believe was the other side.

Jamari Traylor is averaging 6 fouls per 40 minutes

I feel like if I believed the refs had a huge impact on games that I probably wouldn't enjoy college basketball or sports for that matter as much as I do lol.

I've been a huge UK fan my entire life. I never bash Cal or the players and if you go to the game thread or the thread about the feelings about the team after the game, you'll see I had nothing but good things to say. I constantly say this team has turned the corner after the Auburn game. The fact we lost a close game in OT at Kansas doesn't change that IMO at all.

There is no doubt in my mind we make a run in March. Every year Cal has been here, he's had us playing our best basketball and I see it coming together again these past 3 games.

Based on our stats and KU's stats

They fouled as much as would be expected. I mean our number on offense is 38.6. Their number on defense is 36.7%. For the game the number was 35.5%. Not unreasonable.

KU on offense averages 38.3%. We average on defense.40.1%. The number for the game was 83.9%. They took 56 shots from the field and 47 from the line.

IMO refs miss calls all the time. But how many calls in a given game? I see the number 47 and I think to myself even giving KU the benefit of the doubt on some calls, that's an awfully high number. High enough to make me feel there's a bigger problem than just the refs.

And there is. We rank 241st in defensive free throw rate. It's never been anywhere this bad in the Cal era. That is way more on the players than the refs.

The refs did not cost UK this game. We had a chance to win at the end of regulation and had a miscue. Our bigs had a hard time defending without fouling tonight. I know it's tough to lose a close game we had a chance to win but you really make yourself look petty when you whine about the officials. It was a great game and we saw that the Cats have a great chance to be right there at the end in march. GBB!

It's not just this game too.

People brought up the Vandy game. It was at our place. We won by 19. Yet they took 25 and we only took 6.

It isn't until you realize that in conference play Vandy is number 1 in the SEC in getting to the line. Our defense has ranked 11th in conference play.

I don't think there's any doubt that getting to the line and not fouling are skills for the offense and defense and some teams are just better at it. Much like some teams shoot well, some rebounding well etc etc.

Actually, it's interesting to look at team pages on sites like Kenpom because you notice patterns. So coaching philosophy plays a huge role in it.

Take a team like Michigan. Overall, under Beilen, not a great defense. But in terms of not fouling these are their rankings year to year under him: 16th, 9th, 2nd, 1st, 43rd, 42nd, 7th, 33rd and 21st.

Or Ohio St under Matta: 54th, 15th, 9th, 43rd, 29th, 1st, 8th, 4th, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 32nd.

This is a real skill. And it's something we are missing here this season.

That's fair enough. I mean the fact is no one is going to change anyone's opinion on this matter. People who feel refs play a huge role and cost us the game will never feel different and people that do not believe that to be the case will also not feel different.

I was hot after the game. Ridiculous amount of free throws.

After cooling off, I reminded myself I was NOT going to blame the refs if we lost...... Due to the fact our bigs have been foul prone all year. If it had been our guards doing all the fouling, I might still be heated. However, it was our usual suspects.

Now, 47 free throws is excessive. And some of those fouls were crap calls they gave to the offensive player for jumping into our bigs. But, those happen in every game and at a higher rate for the home team.

Gotta take a step back and give Kansas props for playing a little bit better down the stretch. No (more) crying from me.
