Why do the guards hate passing?

Outside of Ulis, this is the most selfish UK team I've seen in a long time. Iso and 1 on 5 with a wild shot at the end. They can't shoot three's, can't shoot freethrows, can't pass. They have one skill offensively. Not exactly NBA material yet.

We tried passing early and turned it over a ton. Illinois state was playing the passing lanes and taking away skal as a post up by denying the entry pass.

Which left two possibilities, shoot or drive.

These guys are all accustomed to having the ball in their hands and being the focal point of the offense. It takes time to adjust and understand you have 4 other guys out there just as good as you. I would say through 7 games we are right on track and I would take our guards over anybody else's. Relax, Kentucky is going to be just fine!

It's almost as if freshmen guards, 5 games removed from the high school game, might have been perplexed by a well-played, unique defense.

Well when Murray has the ball with no Ulis I do not blame him for shooting more anyways as a lot of these guys out there cannot get their own shot off or hit anything other than near the basket so he is our one consistent dynamic playmaker from anywhere on the court without Ulis.

And Briscoe driving to the hoop at will worked pretty well so I liked how he played as well after the slow/bad start. I agree, we are going to be fine and it is a process. I guess what I am saying is I do not mind the selfishness at times. We need playmakers.

lmao worst post off all time . Briscoe lives to pass , it is as if the OP never say or read about Briscoe in high school . Murray is a shoot first pg like many in the NBA but he can pass as well. None are on Ulis' level but no one is in college. Ulis is on of the top 3 players in college . TRUTH.

A lot of the time 3 of the 5 players stood around. Can't pass if no one attempts to get open.

What you really saw was players not holding each other accountable. That is where Ulis shines and you see that reflected in how they play with him on the floor.

Basically, they played like any team would without their best PG, especially one that happens to be one of the best in the country.

We won, move on.

It's a somewhat fair question.. Happens every year. Players come in trying to prove themselves to the coach and to others. They also want to make sure they get minutes. I noticed the guards, more or less Briscoe, have the tendency to take the shot. I think he had 6 FGA's yesterday before anyone else had 2. Yes, that's on the high side, especially for the talent on the floor with him.

Not worried, I imagine this will correct itself within a month or two.

But keep in mind, we've had players in the past who just don't want the pressure or were too reserved to drive the ball. Briscoe isn't that guy. And we might need him more than you think.

I can see where someone might say some looked selfish at times last night, but to claim we never want to pass the ball or share the ball is not accurate. We had a bad start to the game for sure. Take Briscoe for example, early on he tried to make a pass on a break where the defender just dropped into the passing lane. Later on in the game he tried to take in all the way when the smart play was to throw the lob. I think what we saw was a team that wasn't exactly excelling in making the correct reads on offense. This is a result of not having your lead PG on the floor along with youth and learning. Every year we have players that might seem selfish to the eye, but they aren't selfish at all. They just have games where they don't see things open up as well as they do later in the season when they are more experienced.

I think you have Murray and Briscoe confused. Murray is the one that looks to pass, Briscoe looks to score.

I think all of us are aware that Cal has been telling our guys to drive and get fouled right? I mean they said it about 10 times during the game last night so everyone knows this right?
When those are your instructions it's kinda hard to pass the ball when you are being told to drive and get fouled.
I believe that is the plan RIGHT NOW. But I expect that to eventually change.

Briscoe had 7 assists last game.
Don't bother with actual data!

And to guess...our natural PG sat out the game and Briscoe put up 7 dimes in his replacement...and we think we have a sharing problem wtih our guards?

Never met a guard yet that "likes" to pass...they usually only do it because they're supposed to.

And I'm in agreement with all the above posters.

Briscoe will get it..he played well last night, but a couple times he drove in and had Murray wide open at the top of the key and didnt see him...Id like to see him drive and kick back out for the open 3 to Murray ,Ulis or Willis

I was hoping this guy was gone forever.

It's like he's never seen a Cal team in November.

I have had absolutely no complaints about our guards this season. I wish they shot a little better, but I am hoping it comes a long. Last night was rocky at times, but we were missing our lead guard. But, overall I'm very pleased with the Guard play this season, on both sides of the court.

Lol the guards are the opposite of ball hogs.

Last night was the product of a failed offensive system. Pin the blame on Cal, not the guards who were left to do nothing but isos.

There were zero off-ball movement, the bigs were setting weak screens and not diving to the rim hard. Skal had trouble getting position on the block.

we are averaging 13 assists per game
Murray is 3.1
Ulis is 4.3
Briscoe is 3.3

Don't forget the total fell somewhat with Ulis out of the game Monday (and most of Friday)
Plus - and this is something that cracks me up - if the guy you're dishing to can't get a shot to drop, then your assist averages fall. If the guy you're passing the ball to keeps missing, someone needs to score. Our three guards are also averaging in double figures for the season at 15, 13 and 12 respectively.

Count me in as don't like our offense at all and agree that many times guards are selfish. They missed several opportunities to pass to post that had a good position to receive pass.

Noted. Congrats OP on your second like.

Calipari wants them to "DRIVE" and attack the basket. Big guys come in and grab offensive rebounds and get put backs. When the bigs start to develop more the guards will pass to them more. This isn't tough to figure out. Some of you guys want a finished product 7 games into a season.

Offense has to be more diverse then the coaching yelling his lungs out on the sidelines- DRIVE!.

That strategy is easy to stop. If u noticed, the guards attempt to drive, opposing team built a mini-wall and then since there were zero backup plans..they were left to throw up a last second shot while the bigs just stood and watched.

This team and season is young, so the staff should d a better job of helping the offense get smoother shots off, especially when the creator ( Ulis) is out for the game.

It's amazing we beat everyone by double digits so far. You would think if it's easy to stop, the greatest coach in the history of the world would have stopped it.

I get what you're laying out. We're not perfect. We're also a very young team 7 games into the season. Again it's not hard to armchair coach this team right now. There are plenty of things to harp on if that's your style.

Damn, there's a lot of great unemployed coaches here on Rafters.

I don't see why national search committees don't look here more often.

So, you are on record as not liking our offense, which is 11th in the KenPom efficiency ratings? Scoring just under 80 ppg. Got it.

I just do not get good vibes watching this team, poor 3pt shooting, poor free throw shooting, post up players need a lot of work and at times prone to turnovers. Sure hope I am wrong but we will find out soon.

Yeah, if only we had a record of Cal taking a young team and having them at top form for the tournament.

Look, dude, it's early. Of course we are not looking like a title team right now. This last game, because of Ulis being out we got a grand total of ONE basket from Ulis (didn't play), Skal and Humphries (didn't play). This time last year Towns was a shadow of what he became.
