It used to be Cal was the "Dean" of Point Guard U. Not sure with Cal's record of putting them in the league Fultz made the best decision. It's his career. He may make it, he may not but geez if you're a point guard why would you pick someone else....

I'd dare say Cal could teach him more about being a point guard while he played a shooting guard or wing... jmo
Has it happened where a player misleads the media and pulls a hat from under the table? Or does officially mean what it says?

So assuming that Fultz did truly eliminate us....is the consensus that we are looking to sign 2 guards for next year or 3?? It appears that Fox is PG priority #1 and Simmons is #2 with Monk being priority #1 for SG and Alkins #2. Does everybody think we are likely to take 2 or 3 from that player pool? I realize the answer depends on if Ullis leaves but I'm curious as to everyone's opinion??

Fultz would be a great pick up. I think he's as good of a guard as the rest we are recruiting.
As good as Fultz could be, I think Monk is alot better. Cal already has SCJ, so if he adds bridges, Monk, Fox and another big, then UK is loaded again.

This one kinda has the feel of it not being over, despite him announcing tonight. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll end up at Kentucky either.

Maybe it's just it being Washington basically outta nowhere makes me feel like it's not a rational pick that he really thought about.

Of course, I could be completely wrong and he'll be in a UW jersey next year and I'll look stupid, as usual.

The "we didn't want him anyway" and "he's not good enough to start" excuse all in one post. That's golden.
Hey moron, after you're done blowing it out your *** (hopefully blowing back to the board with the rest of the irrelevant Kansas idiots), tell me- if UK signs Fox (very, very possible), and UK signs Monk (very, very possible), and UK signs Bridges (very, very possible), how, exactly, is Fultz going to project as a starter? Oh, that's right- he won't.

Who knows what went on here . Fultz IMO is better player right now then Alkins but Alkins is a better pro prospect due to size. But , and that is a huge but if Fultz thinks he is pg and wanted to play that he can go elsewhere as he has very little pg to his game . Fox will be our PG and he , or even Simmons are much better pgs then Fultz.

Also we will sign 3 guards these year ( 1 pg 2 sgs) so this makes it more likely we get Alkins in the fall and Monk in the Spring .

For Jerry Meyer and anyone else who cares, I doubt Cal mismanaged this kid's recruitment. Simmons, Fox, and Alkins are all better than him. Prediction: Cal gets at least two of the three.

UK has been his "dream school" and we aren't in his final 3. The only sensible conclusion is that if we really wanted him he would be here.

The other conclusion is he feels he owes his handlers and they want him elsewhere

I agree honestly. If the Fultz buzz is true, I'm disappointed but not heartbroken by any means. Fox and Monk are the guys I want. Fultz and Alkins are a wash to me; couldn't really decide which I like better and would gladly have taken either but they would hopefully be a backup to Fox/Monk which should be the best backcourt in the nation if it happens.

like i said for a while.

  1. uk isnt going to get as many guards as fans had hoped
  2. if a guard is picking early, it likely wont be uk
  3. uk is going to get monk so everything else doesnt matter so much

It's odd how it went from the rumor he'd be next to us not making the top three.

Hope Monk and Fox are on board.

Can't say I expected not to be in his final 3 but it's not surprising either. If he knows Cal is gunning hard for Fox and Monk, and with the possibility of Ulis returning, he knows he'll get limited minutes at Kentucky, dream school or not. The other schools on his list will give him 30+ minutes per game.

As long as he doesn't pick Louisville I wish him well wherever he chooses.

I think at this point it is safe to say that Kentucky probably leads for Fox, Monk, Bridges and Alkins. It is a matter of when these kids decide to commit. If they are willing to wait until the Spring AND Murray and Briscoe are good enough to go one and done (Murray probably/Briscoe doubtful), Kentucky will probably land two of the four.

If it isn't UK. Anywhere but Louisville.

I think this is like the DeAngelo Russell situation last year. The kid likes Kentucky but he wants to be a starting PG and he wants to control the team.

Malik Newman also comes to mind, some kids just want to take all of the shots and handle the ball at all cost. This has cost him a shot at playing in the Final 4 and being on ESPN every week. Best of luck to him though, unless he picks the Cards.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But don't count out the fact that these guys wanting to play PG are because of NBA aspirations. You simply cannot be an NBA starter at SG with the height of guys like Newman and Fultz as a rule. There are occasionally exceptions like Monta Ellis but you have to play in a very specific offensive system AND Ellis has upset every coach he has ever had in the NBA.

If I'm not mistaken, didn"t Fultz say a while back that he was not taking an official visit to UK because he has been here before on unofficial visits. The media may be assuming that the decision is between those schools because they were on his visit list. If Cousins had dinner with his family at their home, then the desision could well be UK. Or, with the info he received from Cousins, he may have decided he didn't want to work that hard for a starting position. I still call it a toss-up.

That is a good point however Cal put Bledsoe with Wall in his first year. Also this year we will be playing 3 PGs, I don't think sharing that position at UK would have hurt Fultz.

Guys we can not get them all. I also believe Cal knows that he has a good chance to get Fox and Monk. We will be fine.

We will get 2 SGs this year and a PG . Was hoping Fultz would be one but anyone acting like this is a big deal at this point is overreacting . Kid is going to regret going to Washington though for a myriad of reasons . Go to Zona if not Uk but Washington ? LOL . Romar is a total joke of a coach and you will be on tv 1-2 times all year .

@jerrymeyer247: If Markelle Fultz does announce Washington, it's stunning that Kentucky mismanaged recruitment as the dream school. https://t.co/2x7hCrK2Qb
I really wouldn't call it mismanaging as much as I would call it prioritizing other players. That said, Meyer has to place blame and say something to make him look better since he all but guaranteed Fultz to UK.

Precisely. I have no problem with Meyer but that's just a dumb thing to say when there are clearly players that Cal put before Fultz.

UK will land Monk or Alkins. If I had to bet, I would bet on Monk. Both are better players than Fultz.

Basically what my view is, Meyer trying to cover his ***.

I typically don't have a problem with Meyer, but he has a bad habit of ****-stirring unnecessarily.

A perfect example was his comments about Nike's involvement in Blakeney's de-commit last year, followed by immediately picking him to UK. That managed to set off the insanely paranoid Louisville UK/WWW/Nike conspiracy theorists. Of course Blakeney ending up somewhere other than UK didn't seem to matter to them. They ramped up again when Maverick Rowan moved to a Nike AAU team.

What's obvious with this latest comment is that Meyer is covering his arse about calling Fultz a UK lock. He wasn't wrong, UK just bungled his recruitment.

UK would have taken Fultz' commitment, but the writing was on the wall. Fox, Monk, and Alkins are all higher priorities and Fultz - as good as he is - would most likely have been coming off the bench.

Lol - I think the guys who said Markelle's shot is broke were right.

been saying that for over a month. he is a play making guard, playing on a terrible circuit where he gets the green light to do whatever he wants. had a killer weekend late and people went crazy. look at the body of work. he is a high volume shot taker, low efficiency. talented for sure...but needs a lot of work
