I like Jeff Scott, but it seems to me he is simply trying to gain favor with his team by pandering to their illogical emotions. Leadership would be not practicing in response to when a police officer is senselessly killed in the line of duty trying to keep his community safe, and no one else talks about it because it's not the "wok" thing to do.

you see his speech the other day where he held back tears? You're saying he's faking that. I'd like to see you tell him that to his face

Good for Coach Scott! Very impressed with him in his short tenure as a HC

With that said, I can see this thread being praised quite a bit just because it’s Coach Scott. This is what gets me about this board (and this isn’t a jab at Larry at all ... but just pointing out the hypocrisy on this board more than anything, especially amongst TI’s West Zone)

Since Coach Scott said it, he’ll be praised and hailed as a leader. If Coach Swinney said these exact words, he’d be praised 10x over. But if Ryan Day said this, or any coach from the PAC12 said this (and they have said some of this in some variation), or God forbid some MLB manager, NBA coach, or MLS coach said these exact words, there’d be a debate amongst the left and right. If a MLB manager said this, that manager would be **** on about politics. And if a NBA coach said this, there would be a race discussion and how liberals are ruining our country. This board is a bit much sometimes.

Edit - and ... I was wrong. I see that it’s turned to yet another social justice/injustice debate already

I tend to agree in part. I get that there is a problem, but the issue in Wisky isn't anything like the Floyd case. There is a lot of uncertainty as to whether the cops acted correctly or not.

So if this is just about the Blake incident, I would say this is pandering.

But at the same time, a head football coach cannot sit there and tell his players that the fact they feel unsafe or discriminated against, doesn't matter. I get that.

Jeff Scott is a good man and I have a ton of respect for him. I will say that.

Let me get this straight. Riots and looting nationwide, Playoff's postponed, college athletes refuse to practice and coaches in tears all because a sexual assaulter gets 911 called on him, promptly refuses direct orders to stand down, then refuses to comply after a taser is deployed, then refuses to comply with guns drawn on him, and then decides to reach for a deadly weapon in his car? This is an example of racial injustice and warrants any of the outrage going on right now?

Lot of retards in this country.

Or 911 being called and another occurrence of police being unable to control the situation without shooting someone. Also the negligence of the police department to not have body cams after 3 years of being approved. People don't trust the police right now and that department failed themselves and their community.

I have a lot of respect for Jeff and I know he is trying to empathize with his players but the double standard and hypocrisy in this country is disgusting. Why is there only huge press and no practice when it’s an incident with a white officer and a black criminal? I can’t emphasize enough- comply with what the police tell you to do and you live to see another day.

Are we going to sit out of practice a day when a black senselessly kills a white? Plenty of those incidents have happened lately. And they are without question cold blooded murder. Nothing debatable. These are not innocent people who are being shot by officers.

Its a great public statement and I applaud him for having a strong leadership group developing at South Florida. He's well ahead of 99% of all 1st year coaches.

But maybe what is being missed in this situation (not just by Coach Scott) is that there is a time for emotion, and there is a time to step back and add reason. Jacob Blake and Rayshard Brooks are different from Brianna Taylor and George Floyd. This would have been a good opportunity to both empathize and educate.

They find a knife in Jacob Blake's car and unless you can see through a car door how would you know that there was a knife inside of his car. If you refuse to comply to an officer you should be shot seven times. Who was sexually assaulted, police were called because his girlfriend said he was on her premise without permission. Oh and then a seventeen year old white male with a gun who has just murdered two people and shot a third person walks down the street with a gun and police ride past him. Somehow you ask how is this racial injustice and why is there outrage. You are right there are lots of retards in this country.

Most of these police involved shootings wouldn’t happen if the person simply complied. I’ve seen plenty of crazy incidents where police seem to have the situation under control until the bad guy pulls a gun, knife, screwdriver, etc.

It’s insane that, in a lot of these cases, the bad guy is resisting arrest or even attempting to harm police officers and the public defends these criminals like they did nothing wrong...

I agree 100%. It's pretty much what every coach has to do unless you want the media to try to ruin you.

Many people on this board and in the US are going to be surprised when the Floyd cases go to trial. I predict 3/4 will be acquittals. Chauvin has an 80% chance or higher of being an acquittal.

If the Floyd wasn’t in the public eye, the chance of acquittal for all four would approach 100%. If a case like this happened in my jurisdiction, I would not bring charges.

If you want a primer on the facts and not what the completely useless, completely in favor of race war, US media is serving up, start here (the author is a former fed/state prosecutor). For those interested, this is a strong follow-up).

You should also read ALL the autopsy reports, read the fox reports, and watch the police body cam footage. For bonus points ask yourself why you haven’t heard about most of this. Everything referred to has a primary source you can review for yourself. These sources are going to be the evidence relied upon at trial.

The post trial riots after these cases are going to be insane.

There’s no real plan or solutions behind any of this. Essentially just doing it to follow the crowd and not be called out by the media or the blue check brigade on twitter.

The law doesn't say shoot a man in the back numerous times when not threatened.

I know this is hard for you to believe but the police aren't always right.

They let a man causally walk to the driver's side door and didn't do anything until he got inside, I'd say that isn't controlling the situation.

Illogical emotions? By what standard? One man's pandering is another man's support I suppose. As a leader, Jeff Scott's primary responsibility is to serve his team. Good for him for doing that.

This is only speculation, but I bet that this isn't all just about the Jacob Blake shooting, which has tons of grey areas in it. Probably when they have these meetings, coaches hear a lot of stories from these young men about experiences they've had in their lives that they associate negatively with law enforcement, etc. On top of that, when you're 16-25 y/o, I think you're more likely to want to engage in a movement that has meaning socially or politically. Sometimes those movements end up veering off course or having aspects about it you regret associating with.

It would be pretty cynical to chalk this up to Jeff Scott faking emotions in a press conference in order to pander to his players and stay woke. I mean he's not Daniel Day Lewis anyway. But I think the character his family have shown over the numerous years at Clemson would carry some weight here. I think his emotions were genuine and he loves his players.

I don't know what more a body camera would show. If you are a police officer and a someone is refusing your commands and reaches into a vehicle are you supposed to wait till they point a gun at you before you take action? Good luck finding anyone to patrol that community, which will lead to more violence in the future. Maybe the cops should have just backed off and let Mr Blake go. But, remember he was called for a domestic disturbance and had a warrant for his arrest. His kids were in the car, should they just let him leave the scene with the kids?

The only answer is so simple that I just don't understand why both sides of the issue don't uniformly agree. Whether you agree or not with what the police are doing you simply don't get in an altercation with them. Get arrested and face your day in court.

What a ****** up culture we live in that you all can't see this man as a person. And instead see him as just a "black criminal" who deserves to die because he has a record and disobeyed police.

****.

Black lives matter.
