K State FB Players Announce Boycott

He has every right to say what he said, and the players have every right to be offended and choose not to play football for a school that has people that think that way. As someone else said, freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from repercussions from people that are offended. These rights go both ways.

And they are free to have their scholarships yanked while they are demanding that another person's life be permanently damaged by a tweet.

Nothing, he can say whatever he wants. That doesn’t mean KSU has to continue to employ him nor does it mean the KSU players have to play for him.
I know man. I'm pretty sure we've been through this, but if people don't see this for what it is then I don't know what to say. What he said was awful and I don't agree with it, but dang this is America.

I may be in the minority here but as a white male I think it’s time for the White community to take a stand and stop walking on eggshells every day. I think we’ve become conditioned to always watch what we say around different races. We’re not the enemy here, yes there are people with racist views out there, I know I’m not one of ‘em. And I’d bet many on here aren’t either.

Please allow me to tell you a story from work that happened many months ago. I don’t work there anymore.

I had befriended this older black man and we had always got along, always. This one particular day we were working and I always sat behind him. This lady walks by and says something to him and right before he could respond I spoke up and said don’t listen to what this guy has to say, only I was going to use profanity, the last second I decided against it, and what came out of my mouth my black coworker equated to me calling him a “monkey.” He blew up at me and I tried to explain what I said but he’d have none of it. We wound up not speaking for months. And for what? It got back to me that he accused me of being a “racist red neck.”

That’s the point I’m attempting to make. This must stop somewhere. I wound up walking on eggshells for months. And here’s the real clincher, my black coworker, I thought of him as a good man. Came to work everyday, worked hard, great sense of humor, but because of that one little misunderstanding he wouldn’t allow me to have a conversation with him to explain myself, the relationship ended.

He wound up taking another job and his last day there I walked up to him and said “Good luck with your new job, I think you’re a good guy despite any differences we may have had, and he reached out and shook my hand.

I guess my point in all this is that we as a society need to put our differences aside. Sure there are bad people out there, but I’m of the opinion that most people are good.

Yep that wasn't a good thing to say but it was not warranted of being kicked out of college. What about your freedom of speech? The thin-skinned will probably buckle to the politically correct masses and kick him out of school, get his parents fired from their jobs, and make it impossible for the family to buy groceries from the grocery store. They might even tear down the cemetery markers of the grandparents and/or great-grandparents.

This is all getting so tiresome. I hope that anyone (people) in a position of power will fight back on the extreme politically correct Commie Socialist-Fascists bastards and lets fix the things that need fixing in this country in a sane proper way. It's not perfect, and has never been perfect, nor has anything or any body been, but changing what is arguably the best system on the planted to a proven historically failed Socialism, Fascism, and Communism system is Neanderthalic, and certainly points to a flawed educational system in this country that is teaching and pushing this trash. Start first with education reforms to teach the truth, and truth of ALL history, good and bad.

I am taking another position here, and it is off topic a bit; however, the leader of the free world has been insensitive with no moral compass since he has been in office. I am not choosing one political party. My concern is that the ‘Tip of the spear’ in government, business, family dynamics dictates the path of those following. Our world is a bit off now because of how it is being led. We must all be aware and handle ourselves in a better way. A legacy is all that is left after we leave the world.

So let me get this straight. You are so offended you want to destroy a person for tweeting something you don't like and you want others to grow up? Seriously? However distasteful you may find it, this person should be free and is free to say what they want. If we adopt your standards of what can be said, who decides these things? It just doesn't work and it leads to absolute disaster.

I am offended you called someone awful for basically saying words shouldn't have such power and we should just walk past stupid comments like the one tweeted in this case. By your standards, your TI account should be canceled because you attacked a person's worth over something you didn't like. Is that how it works?

I agree with the grow up part of your post. Just not the way you'd like. A lot of people need to grow up including the idiots who would boycott something over a tweet by some random person. We have gone stark raving mad in this country. Such dangerous times we live in.
Be professional.

A new record! We almost made it through two pages before this was blamed on Trump. LOL

What's happening now is in no way his fault. It's our fault. Stop trying to shift the blame. This started long before he ever became president anyway.

Some random nobody student attempted to make a joke (albeit a bad one), and it hurt these kids’ feelings so much that they refuse to play football? Like the random kid’s views are representative of the university? This is reaching historical levels of idiocy. What they are actually empowering is authoritarianism. They certainly aren’t accomplishing what they think they are accomplishing.
It really is amazing when you think about it. And yet, some ITT will proudly cheer on the athletes and the removal of the student simply for a joke they didn't like

Why not give the attention to a more deserving person or group though? Like the Charleston church folks? They were actually shot down by a guy who admitted to it being racial. I’ve been a little confused in this regard

The Charleston "Church folks" you refer to resulted in much emotion at that time as I remember. Appropriate emotion based on the situation. We saw grace and forgiveness, while also seeing symbols of racial division removed from state grounds.

The big difference is justice vs. injustice. The person that committed that crime was arrested and charged as soon as he was captured. That is a level of justice that most can accept as appropriate in our society.

The lack of justice for the victim after incidents like the George Floyd case is almost as infuriating as the act itself. The murder was committed on Monday, many of us saw the video a day or two after that, but the arrest doesn't happen until Friday. I believe that arrest doesn't happen without the protests, and it definitely doesn't happen without video.

That injustice has awaken many. It has awaken me, a two time Clemson grad, because that could be me. It has nothing to do with sinner vs saint. George Floyd wasn't chosen and he didn't volunteer, he just happened to be the guy that day. It's simply right vs wrong as it relates to justice, and his murder shined a light on that..

The push for positive change we see right now in society has nothing specifically to do with George Floyd, but the result of an awakening due to how he died and the lack of action that followed.

Simple solution. Miss a mandatory team activity and face discipline. Miss too many and lose your scholarship. Play with whomever is left.

Football teams should be about football not whateve your cause of the moment is.

Lol at our country. Are there any adults left? We'll see if there are any at Kansas State I guess.

I am not hopeful.

There was nothing racist in the statements made in the story. Making disparaging remarks about someone that has been to jail 8 times does not make a person a racist nor does pointing out that BLM is not intended to help black people at all instead black people are being used. Heck most of the money being raised goes to white politicians! Look it up people! This is a slippery slope that is being made steeper by the minute by extremists. When you make a rule remember it applies to you also despite what the Democrat "leadership" would have you believe. I would be glad to stand with people that want to approach police and judicial systems about sentencing about making sure people are getting pulled over for the same reasons and sentencing is the same for the same crime. Entertainers, politicians, the uber rich have a complete different set of rules than we do but it is not because of skin tone. 3 card monty folks.

You could not be any more correct. These players are supposed to be part of a team that is supported by a university. Shut up, do your job, be grateful for your scholarship, act respectfully.

Exactly. The problem here is these kids know that no one's going to do anything but support their protest and probably give them what they want. No administration is going to be brave enough to weather the media storm that would come from telling these players that their scholarships would be revoked if they don't show up. Until people develop the courage to do the right thing we're going to continue to see this mob mentality everywhere we go.

key words ...” weather the media storm “ .... the left leaning media in our country absolutely controls the narrative in every situation and drives public opinion mostly as they wish with and due to political correctness , which in my opinion has been the most dangerous thing to the Republic since it’s founding .

Kid should be expelled for being an idiot alone. And if all the players boycott then K-State can’t play football and the university can’t make any money from it. The players are realizing their leverage and it’s glorious.
They are boycotting because of one students bs. Let that sink in.

So the scales of justice now swing on what you believe and don't believe? And a matter of days is what outrages you? Look up the case of Tony Timpa. It is likely you have no idea who he is. His death was filmed and it happened in 2016. No outrage. No marches. No calls for reform. The cops laughed while we died. Guess what else? They were charged and then charges were dismissed. The charges didn't come for months! I doubt you posted about it or cared because the guy killed was white yet it was almost identical to what happened to George Floyd.

We are not consistent. That's why this is so frustrating. In the end, it's more about political gain than anything else. It's about growing and nurturing the racial grievance industry. I would be so grateful for an opportunity to solve problems. But that's not what we do anymore.

Yes, it is. Don't forget about the part public education has played in this. And I am afraid we're past the point of being able to go back.

No matter your opinion of the tweet or anything that’s going on in this country, if you agree that an entire football team should threaten to walk off because of one lone voice that’s not even employed by the school, then you are a fvcking idiot. By that standard Clemson’s football team should quit too.

Free speech protects him from prison. Not from being fired/expelled. There are consequences for racist language. If he worked at my place of employment I’d boycott til he was fired too.
I agree with you on the 1st part
I ain't missing a check because of it though
Something has to be done because if you don't, you'll create an uncontrolled chaos where people will just say and do hurtful things at will because they know it's no consequences for their actions.

He made a really classless comment about a dead guy. The fact you see it as racist says more about you than it does about him. Or are we at the point where anytime something is said about a black person it is automatically racist? How's that work? Do we even know the definition of racism anymore?

Well yes, you can see the the great 'treetiger' (well, maybe not great!) can get frustrated and pushed to the limits. Yes, I agree some reforms need to be done to the police system, but tearing it all down and/or pulling it out by the roots is flat out stupid!!!

We are watching the greatest generation (WW2 generation, generation before me) pass away before our eyes, and my generation (the peace, love, and flower child generation), though not the greatest, made significant progress in many directions, but now this generation (current generation, or generation following mine) that has completely lost any identity other than to be known as revolutionists and anarchists, pointing fingers back at us and telling us how bad, stupid, and racists we were/are . Even when their revolution fails and this generation becomes known for what it actually is (I guess that will happened only if we can reform the media?), which, in my opinion, will be known (for the most part) as radical revolutionists and anarchists ideologues. I'm just glad that my children are not (at least now) in this revolution. Hopefully the next generation will find some moral compass and direction and stop this foolishness, if there is even a decent nation left to build? :(

From a Notre Dame fan on Reddit who clearly has more legal knowledge than me:

1. 1st Amendment protects you from the government. State colleges are part of the government and therefore have speech limit restrictions.
2. But wait, can't they throw him out for inciting disruption? Of course they can. But the speech standard must be for imminent lawless action and/or substantial disruption. (Bradenburg v Ohio (9-0 decision) and Tinker v. Des Moines (7-2 decision))
3. Now while this is causing disruption, this should not hold up because of the heckler's veto exception, which says that a public school can't censor a minority opinion just because a lot of students may disagree and shout the person down. (Gregory v. Chicago, 9-0 decision)
4. In conclusion, this kid is a POS. However, he has a right to say what he thinks as long he is not directly inciting violence. KSU players need to quit giving this kid oxygen and ignore him.

He wants attention. He wants to get expelled so he can sue them.
I’ll add from the same place.... the tweeter runs a white supremest student organization, allegedly. He’s using this to promote his “cause.”

Serious question, how was his distasteful joke "racist language"? It made no reference of his skin color, only his drug addiction.

I suggest you consider the differences. K-State is not a private entity. It's a state (government) institution. The 1st amendment protects people from government punishing them for their speech. So in this case, since K-State is a government entity, the student is protected clearly. K-state can expel him, but they are certainly open to liable if sued and would certainly lose.

This post is comically childish. It's really starting to become clear through posts like this that a lot of y'all think you are in some sort of position to demand something out of people. You aren't, and it's pissing you off. Grow up.

DId I offend your sensibilities? Hurt your feelings?

These spoiled kids are on a scholarship to play football. Boycott football, forfeit your scholarship. This should be simple enough for even you to understand.

If you boycott your work do you expect to get paid?

The President just retweeted a video in which one of his rabid supporters yelled “white power.” Let’s not act like there isn’t still major racism in this country.

Are there many instances where false allegations of racism are made or people use perceived racism for their own benefit? Yes there are. Are these terrible? Yes they are. But if you haven’t been through what many black people in this country have gone through since the country was formed its kind of difficult to tell them how they should feel.
