A lot of talk about gun regulation, but the biggest issue is mental health. Awareness, education and treatment. Someone close to me recently committed suicide and I had no idea there was an issue even remotely close to leading to that result.
As far as gun regulation, I agree that some of the unnecessary stuff should be illegal. Automatic weapons, bump stocks, giant magazines.
That said, guns really aren’t the problem. Two-thirds of gun deaths are suicides. Of the remaining third (approx. 12K annually) fewer than 50-100 are part of these mass shootings.
Now we all agree that number would be zero in an ideal world, but I think we also agree that the unstable people committing these crimes will find a way to destroy life regardless of the tool.
If you want to control gun deaths, focus on where the deaths are concentrated. Up to a third are gang or drug related. The majority happen in 2% of the counties in the US.
And this is just a fact and not intended to be a racial thing, but over half of gun deaths are African American males, despite being less than 7% of the population.
The vast majority of gun deaths are from handguns as well. Not assault rifles, high capacity firearms, etc.
If a person wants to be serious about reducing gun deaths, firearm regulation should be several notches down their priority list. They would focus on mental heath, localized issues resulting in firearm deaths (in the 2% of counties), and whatever issues are creating the significantly skewed rate at which African American males are dying.
Instead, people try to politicize gun regulation and it’s really sad to “weaponize” tragedies for political expedience.
