Buckeye here. Probably jumping the gun somewhat with you guys preparing for the playoffs. BTW, congratulations. But I can't wait as this very well could be a match up of the first two playoff champions. No doubt where ESPN College Game Day will be at on that Saturday.

Question for you. Do you return quite a bit of the 2015 team or would you consider 2016 as a rebuilding
team ?

Offense returns 3 OL. Lose 2 starting WR..including our best Shepard.
Return QB and both outstanding RBs
defense return most of it…lose Striker, arguably our best def player.

We'll be strong again next year and possibly better if we can replace a few key players.

Actually, the team should be stronger, the offensive line loses two senior starters but the guys behind them all have playing time and are juniors, sophomores, and left tackle currently if a freshman. The RBs will be juniors and will be in contention for the Heisman with Mayfield. We lose Sterling Shepard at WR, but Dede Westbrook is a solid replacement wiloll have a bigger role. Also, our TE is just coming into his own, he will be a big target next year.

OU will be more experienced all round. The secondary players are underclassmen and will return. We lose some LBs and DEs, but the underclassmen have been getting good reps on rotation.

Lest we forget we've got some considerable talent in the commitment list bullpen.

Bryce Youngquist and Pernell Jefferson, both linebackers look good enough to possibly play a little as true freshmen.
We'll keep a good thought on that though.:D

As long as the team stays hungry and doesn't listen to the media, the preseason rags, and fans telling how great they are before doing anything.

Yep, that will bring a team back to earth FAST - along with lousy OCs. Believe me, we know from experience. You just never know with all of the parity that exists in today's CF.

Are you talking about your current OC? If so, that seems strange for a team that lost only one game in the regular season........

Yep, you know as well as anyone how delicate it is to maintain a championship caliber team.
We sort of are the Buckeyes 2015 edition. Lose once, relatively early...still make the cut in the final.

Lose late in the season, curtains. That's got to be a ***** for sure. Wow!

I find this latest discussion ironic. Someone like me is always skeptical and I find myself the optimist and those that I find typically the cheerleaders are the skeptical ones. Very odd...someone pinch me.

I get that too.
I suppose beating the #1 team in the country will bring some more around, but you never know.:)

I realize that the words "down/failed season" sounds strange after going 11-1, but that's the way some Buckeye fans view it after not making the playoffs again. Very, very hard to repeat especially when you're dealing with college kids. We're losing a ton of talent to the NFL after this season, but I'm actually looking forward to next year as - just like you guys - quite a few of our backups received valuable playing time. Plus Urban's freshman and sophomore classes are absolutely stacked BUT that's based on potential which can be a dangerous/iffy word some times. Should be a heck of a game though..

No disrespect here, but if "some Buckeye fans" consider your 11-1 season as a "down/failed" season after winning it all last year, they need to find a new sport to follow.

I will say this though, we have a few nuts that post on this board with the same attitude...

Good luck in your Bowl Game.....It's going to be a great one........

Great post. I hadn't thought about that potential story line. That would indeed be huge. ESPN would be on that like flies on ****. I wonder how many ACC fans at the end of next year will be saying that OU didn't beat anyone all year. I mean, Ohio State is just from that crappy Big10 conference.

The playoff for OU to me is like playing with house money, just enjoying the dice rolling down the table looking for a hard eight.

Totally agree. But isn't that just the nature of big-time CF. Heck, I've visited this board over the years and there were times when one would think - just by some of the ranting - that Stoops was the biggest misfit/idiot around. I have news for some of you as an outsider: he's a great, great coach. If he ever decided to leave, watch the list of school's that would absolutely jump all over him.

You read too much into criticism. Obviously it exists and last year it really exists. I think the people that think about Stoops and his commitment is a lot more concerned with longevity/money versus results. Last year the results versus expectations were extreme. This year the converse is inverse. As much **** as were distributed last year, much more positive is distributed this year. It's like one extreme to the other and some were consumed with XX number of years at one place is enough. Some are like, it's Big Game Bob still, give him a shot.

I am of the former and critical as hell. I was wrong, I contend that BGB is in the house. I am so happy to be wrong and once again he has earned my respect. That is why I am a fan and not a coach though...I know less than he does or I'd expect to earn what he makes.

Good analysis. The unknown is how many juniors, if any, will try the NFL.

After the Texas loss, there were some seniors that stepped up and became huge playmakers and righted the ship. Striker has always been a playmaker, and he has some major upside and a few things on the not so upside. He might be the smallest senior three year starter linebacker in the FBS. But he can be awesome in the pass rush.

Charles Tapper might be a better player and has made more plays in the last two months.

Both G Nila Kasitati and C Ty Darlington made all conference. I don't see them as that level, but apparently others do. Darlington has won all these awards because he's a brilliant student and deeply involved in all sort of community activities. All four of those guys are captains.

The biggest loss will be Shepard, who is the go to guy in the offense. There are two players on the offense that right now, we would not win another game, if we lost them. Shepard is not replaceable. Neither is Mayfield. Baker is a junior. He'll be back. Those five seniors are major factors. Duron Neal is another senior starter at receiver. He's become a reliable player this year, but DC's don't sit up at night worrying about how to defend him. New receiving talent will have to become go to guys. We have none returning. A couple have the skills to be.

We also lose a very quality kick off guy. And maybe the most overlooked senior is the book end to Eric Striker, Devante Bond who was a juco last season. He's had more than one injury problem, but he is often as good and as disruptive as Striker. And he's better against the run.

That's most of what we lose. We also lose the first two OLine back ups who are seniors and both started games this season.

The big plus, assuming the best returner doesn't go to the NFL, is the DLine. We use three players with their hand on the ground and have six quality players to rotate in. They might be the key to the defense. We lose the two senior OLB's, but maybe OUr best defensive recruit a year ago. was there. We know nothing about him. He hasn't played. We'll see.

The two inside linebackers were too small two years ago to really hold up against a quality power running game. Next year they'll be seniors and might be the strength of the team. The DBs last season were a negative. That got turned around this year. We have all conference types at both corners and one safety. The defense got solidified when Steven Parker moved to safety and William Johnson, because the nickel back. The whole secondary returns.

Offensively, we have two great second year running backs. One is a soph, Samaje Perine, and Joe Mixon is a freshman. That should be an elite pair. It took the OC about five game to figure out how to best utilize them in his offense. He figured it out.

Mayfield will return. We have a potentially elite tight end / HBack guy in Mark Andrews. This is the one area where a serious upgrade will be really important. The wides have to threaten the defense in OUr offense. Otherwise, the quarterback gets really beat up.

Both returning OTackles are freshmen. One redshirt, one true frosh. When they became the permanent starters the week after the Texas loss, the offense got it in gear. The best underclass guard will move to center. So the task will be to find two guards. There are several good candidates already on the roster and a couple incoming "with promise."

We have a freshman kicker/punter who is excellent at both, though he's tailed off just a little after a very good first half of the season. OU is a tough matchup for tOSU. But the reverse is also true. One big factor I think, is that Urban Meyer knows our scheme really well.

The game will likely be a battle between two of the best five quarterbacks in the country. How the support staff plays will be vital. If we get our receiving corps solidified, it ought to be a tremendous offense. The defense has to have great DL play to be effect. We have two underclassmen who are very talented and one is a great player, who are both wrapping up their third season. Both would be well served to come back. But if either declares for the draft, it would be a big factor.

If both return, and there is good health, the defense could be elite.

First off k2c please quit making a fool of yourself ( you do this on a regular basis but don't do it in front of guests). I'm worried about the loss of Shepard. His productivity in big games will be hard to replace. Hopefully we land some big time recruits who can step in right away.

"I'm worried about the loss of Shepard. His productivity in big games will be hard to replace."

I hear ya. OSU went through the same this year after they lost their home run threat - Devin Smith - to graduation and the NFL. They thought (the coaches) had his replacement in a kid named Noah Brown, but he broke his leg in camp and was out for the year. Then we get Corey Smith - our other star receiver from last year - back from suspension and he gets injured and is currently appealing for a medical hardship. But realistically, neither was going to fill the void left by Devin Smith. He just totally "killed it" in the BIG CG and the playoffs. I've watched you guys play a few times this year and Shepard is in the same mode as Smith was in last year. Shepard's simply the best in the country and it's going to be interesting to see what/how opposing teams try to cover him in the playoffs. I know no one can cover him one on one so I wonder what some of the other options they'll try.

Anyways, thanks for the info and can't wait for our game next year. Come to think of it, especially if you win it all this year, you guys could very well be the preseason no. 1 team. But, take it from a fan that went through it this year, it's dam* hard to repeat. You guys will get everyone's best shot. Good luck in the playoffs and see you next September.
