I think this is a joke, but this would be the same logic is assuming the Will Muschamp era would’ve turned out like the Steve Spurrier era because both came from Florida.Steve Newton 2.0, oh boy!
either way we are screwedI think this is a joke, but this would be the same logic is assuming the Will Muschamp era would’ve turned out like the Steve Spurrier era because both came from Florida.
In all seriousness, a lot of Gamecock media is talking positive about BJ McKie. This scares me because I feel like they know he’s going to be the guy.
We’ve been screwed since the Frank McGuire era. Nothing has changed. Us already being screwed as a program has more to do with this coaching search than who is conducting it. This is not a good job. One of the worst P5 jobs out there.either way we are screwed
We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.We’ve been screwed since the Frank McGuire era. Nothing has changed. Us already being screwed as a program has more to do with this coaching search than who is conducting it. This is not a good job. One of the worst P5 jobs out there.
A lot of the mid-major jobs are much better than this one.
Man you sure are fried chicken. Nothing but gloom and doom from you. We’ve been screwed since the Frank McGuire era. Nothing has changed. Us already being screwed as a program has more to do with this coaching search than who is conducting it. This is not a good job. One of the worst P5 jobs out there.

Fogler had 2 good seasons. Felton went to the tournament once and we were stuck in the Metro. So…4-5 seasons out of 40 we haven’t been screwed? We’ve been the worst program in the conference since we joined the SEC. I don’t like it. I wish it weren’t the case.We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.
Tell me where I’m wrong…please. By the way, I’m the one that shot down the logic that the Murray State coach, McMahon, would be Steve Newton 2.0Man you sure are fried chicken. Nothing but gloom and doom from you.
Fogler decided not to be ambitious? Would you say Ray Tanner decided not to be ambitious? We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.
Fogler felt the NCAA Tournament should be a goal each season, not the expectation. The reality is Fogler knew what we’ve seen play out the past 25 years. Winning consistently here is difficult and would take a lot of time. Especially when he was competing against Duke and UNC in their prime to recruit guys. Not to mention Pitino at UK and Calhoun at UConn.Fogler decided not to be ambitious? Would you say Ray Tanner decided not to be ambitious?
Felton I completely agree with....he was just beginning to show real progress. Fogler was an excellent coach, but he was unwilling to recruit the AAU circuit....and I think that would have eventually caught up with him.We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.
Another successful coach we probably could have hired and passed on.Fogler had 2 good seasons. Felton went to the tournament once and we were stuck in the Metro. So…4-5 seasons out of 40 we haven’t been screwed? We’ve been the worst program in the conference since we joined the SEC. I don’t like it. I wish it weren’t the case.
Blame Dixon all you want, but Felton had issues that contributed to it. I think there’s a reason he was never a head coach again. Hell, our own student section heckled him for being an alcoholic when he returned with Kentucky under Tubby.
One way to put it.....he refused to recruit the AAU circuit which was becoming much more popular....he heavily criticized Donovan at UF for being unethical in doing so and supposedly was also the reason he refused to recommend Marshall when Odom stepped down.Fogler decided not to be ambitious? Would you say Ray Tanner decided not to be ambitious?
His name came up all the time. Though I think Tubby may have used us as leverage to get more $$ from Kentucky later on in his career. We would’ve been NCAA Tournament regulars under Tubby. His UGA teams were good too.Another successful coach we probably could have hired and passed on.
Amen!!We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.

Mike McGee was a football guy, not a basketball guy…so he and Fogler had huge disagreements. The last 3 years under Fogler were really bad, though there was reason for optimism his final year. I personally wish we had stuck with Fogler as I think it could’ve really paid off in the end positioning wise. I think he knew how long it was going to take to build a consistent winner here. McGee disagreed and didn’t extend his contract so Fogler basically told him to shove it.
Martin same way. People with character.Fogler didn't want to get his hands dirty with the AAUs and didn't like that recruiting was headed the direction it was.
Puritanism was his undoing. What the callow student section did was as substantive as a Krispy-Creme doughnut.Fogler had 2 good seasons. Felton went to the tournament once and we were stuck in the Metro. So…4-5 seasons out of 40 we haven’t been screwed? We’ve been the worst program in the conference since we joined the SEC. Anachronisms. Especially now.Martin same way. People with character.
We've been screwed ever since we left the ACC. We could have been a blue blood. We’ve been screwed since the Frank McGuire era. Nothing has changed. From a Peacocks to the Gamecocks!Murray St. goes down to the Peacocks.
Have you looked at the Ohio Valley Conference? It is not a good basketball conference. Murray St is probably the most successful basketball school in that conference and has been for decades, no matter who has been their coach. From a Peacocks to the Gamecocks!
He has made the NCAA more times than Martin in a shorter time.

The Garnett way. Would've, Should've, Could've.We've been screwed ever since we left the ACC. We could have been a blue blood.
Very perceptive. There's such a think as finding your niche and the place where you fit the best. Success at one level doesn't guarantee success at a higher one. It's true in all the sports.Since 1978 Murray State has had 9 coaches and all had Murray State regularly playing in the post season. Eight of those coaches went on to bigger gigs. Only Mark Gottfried and Mick Cronin saw any success after they moved on. Most fizzled out fairly quickly. Murray State is a job similar to Western Kentucky that has a history of making the tournament and making their coaches hot for the jump to bigger schools. UGA and South Carolina had 2 former WKU coaches coaching against each other and neither turned out to be successful for their respective schools.
It also comes down to fitting in a certain program. USC is a tough place due to our geography and culture. One of the coaches we missed on may go to another school and do well. That doesn't mean that they would have done the same here. That's one of the reasons I've always felt we need a big name coach here, because of the difficulties associated with recruiting our very own in-state players. We have to give them a reason not to go play for the blue blood schools.Very perceptive. There's such a think as finding your niche and the place where you fit the best. Landon Powell at North Greenville strikes me as a perfect example of finding your niche.Very perceptive. There's such a think as finding your niche and the place where you fit the best. Success at one level doesn't guarantee success at a higher one. It's true in all the sports.
"focused on remaining at Furman" - love the wording. This is a portion of Cloninger's write up from the P&C this morning:
COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s search to replace basketball coach Frank Martin continues.
USC officials will be in Murray, Kentucky, on March 21, sources close to the situation confirmed to The Post and Courier. Murray is the home of Murray State University and thus, head basketball coach Matt McMahon.
After former Arizona coach Sean Miller was hired at Xavier and with Missouri expected to hire Cleveland State’s Dennis Gates on March 22, the Gamecocks were out of luck on what is believed to be their top two candidates. Another potential choice, Furman coach Bob Richey, was reported by WSPA’s Pete Yanity to be “focused on remaining at Furman” after he interviewed with USC.
Chattanooga head coach Lamont Paris and Wake Forest assistant coach BJ McKie, a legendary former USC player, are also on USC’s list but McMahon is now free to interview after Murray State was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on the evening of March 19. The Racers finished 31-3 and were ranked 20th in the final Associated Press Top 25 of the season.
Well, when you put it that way, there isn't a person in the world, or in history, that we could have reasonably confidently projected success for in our situation. It also comes down to fitting in a certain program. USC is a tough place due to our geography and culture. One of the coaches we missed on may go to another school and do well. That doesn't mean that they would have done the same here. That's what I meant about geographically, because of the ACC. Culturally, the kids in SC grow up rooting for UNC and Duke in basketball and that's who they dream of playing for. Whenever they are good enough to get offers from those schools they jump on them. We've got to find a way to reach kids before they start dreaming of playing for the blue bloods, make them fans of USC first. There is no connection to our basketball program.Geographically, we are a better fit for the ACC we left. We are a better cultural fit for the SEC. Georgia Tech is vice versa.
Agree.George needed drying out.We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.
Everything I've read indicated that Fogler got tired of recruiting. We weren't screwed under Fogler until he decided not to be ambitious. And we weren't screwed under Felton, either, but Dixon pulled the plug on him before his program could get rolling - JMO.
Yes, it's going to take a while, perhaps a long while, for a coach to keep our in-state talent from going to UNC and Duke when they come recruiting. But I feel like that process has to start with beating the Mississippi States, Texas A&Ms, and Alabamas of the world. If we're talking football, that's a tall task, but it shouldn't be that hard in basketball. That's what I meant about geographically, because of the ACC. Would like to see MBB begin to (ir)regularly schedule UnCarolina and Dook in home-and homes during the regular season. Of course, I've been wanting that for over 50 years.Yes, it's going to take a while, perhaps a long while, for a coach to keep our in-state talent from going to UNC and Duke when they come recruiting.
