What high school recruiting fails to deliver, the portal can provide, as we are seeing with Indiana this year.

Not seeing the cloudy FSU program as a highly regarded portal destination. The one-year falloff is getting major press headlines and negative attention from players.

True. Most players jumping in the portal are looking to upgrade their program. Right now, FSU is not an upgrade over anyone. They certainly won't command any top transfers from the FBS level. They could likely lure some top FCS transfers, but you're not rebuilding your program that way.

But back to my point in the post above, FSU is in the position they are in because Norvell has shunned high school recruiting in favor of the portal. And, the very best player they got via transfer, transferred in under the previous head coach.

Norvell's biggest portal move was bringing in DJ and that gave absolutely disastrous results. Predictably disastrous.

As it stands, FSU is not just one or two key players away. They need a roster overhaul.

Could be; could be not. I don't know anything about their payroll.

It just can be all portal players, IU lost 26 players to the portal, and picked up 9.
Somebody up there obviously knows what they are doing, with what they have

Having played against DJ, I'm not sure how Norvell thought that was his solution and has turned out to be a major part of his downfall.

It's crazy Norvell is in his 5th season and doesn't have a quarterback.
Yep. That's the kiss of death.

The best QB he has had was brought in by the previous coach. And that QB was almost singularly responsible for FSU's success the previous 2 seasons.

Norvell's talent evaluation has proved to be questionable, at best.

Hasnt Deon at Colorado done the same? They are like 6-2 this year. It looks like heavy portal using teams will be hit or miss each year.

But Norvell is in the position he is in precisely because of his reliance on the portal.
Your comment triggered a contrast to me immediately:

Dabo - won't use the portal
Norvell - seems to select a high number of players from the portal

That's 2 strategies that are currently being "tested" - and neither one seem to be working out. I guess like everything else in life, moderation is key.

Norvell is not treading water. He is swimming as fast as he can from the sharks. FSU is pushing him out to sea as soon as they can afford it.

Will Florida State employ the same strategy as rival Glorida and instead of firing the HC and paying millions in buyout money, instead use that money to pay players. We’ll see if that strategy might work.Eill schools begin HC’s that they can pay less and use that extra money to upgrade the roster. All this will be played out in the next few years.

Norvell can just stand on top of his bank account to let the sharks pass by. I have zero sympathy for these coaches making this kind of money.

100% agree there. So you want to fire me and pay me 64 million to go away? I would quote Coach O. Loved his honesty.
"Ed Orgeron: "They said, 'Coach, you've got $17.1 million on your contract. We're gonna give it to you.' "I said, 'What time do you want me to leave and what door do you want me out of, brother?'
