24 secs to go in half
You receive KO and you just fair catch it like your p——y a$$ has done for the last 6 years

if you get a penalty just take a damn knee

Has this lame coach become so scared he now is afraid of fumbles and penalties

how about return it to the 40
Complete a pass
Kick a 48 yard FG and go in tied at the half

He has no confidence in his players. Why would the players play hard for him?

3rd and 9 down 6, we run it. Then punt and shank it. He is scared of his JR QB. Yet UW letting their Freshman rip it all over the field. Cowardly coaching, Losing coaching.

A right sweep on a 3rd and 9. Zero shot of working.

I think about this “strategy” of playing not to lose big, and the more I think about it the angrier I get. And not mad for me, or the fans, but the guys out there sacrificing their body and health for this team and this coach.

the science is pretty clear - a proportion of these guys out there are gonna have serious neurodegenerative conditions later in life. Some will have early onset of those conditions.

where’s the glory here?! It’s one thing to sacrifice your body and mind for a cause or for a triumph. What in the heck do you call this?!?!?

Definitely needed its own thread
Actually, it's a boneheaded decision that should be called out to fair catch it there only to try a return later in the game. There are only 24 secs, you try to see if you can flip the momentum going into half. You get a penalty or a bad return, O well, just kneel it out.

If your worry is a fumble, then you've lost all confidence in your team and know the seasons over. Or you've become so risk adverse to a point it's detrimental to your team's success. If the LeGrand injury is still on your mind, then you shouldn't be coaching in the first place.

And this can have a negative feedback loop with players. If all the player hears in practice is talk of turning the ball over and how the job of the offense is to make sure that we don’t lose the turnover battle, how do we think that the players on the field are thinking?

Exactly. And this is nothing new. Even during Schianos first tenure the emphasis was always Turnover margins and time of possession. Points were secondary.

I’m not sure that everybody has completely figured out how he thinks. He is working off of a set of rules that is intended to win the turnover battle but apparently without consideration for how many yards and points are left on the field. This affects a great deal of different things that the team is doing throughout the game and in this case a call to fair catch it.

With a fair catch, yes, you can pretty much guarantee that Wisconsin will not score again in the half but you have reduced the chance that you will score again in the half.

Now here is the million question. With 24 seconds left in the game, who has the higher probability of scoring? Of course the receiving team does and thus they should be aggressive in trying to get at least a field goal. How about a 5-10 yard return and some type of trick play where you get Ashenfelder on the field with the ball in space as he can run?

And obviously, there’s a time and place for this type of thinking, but 2024 and last season, for example, was not it. Those defenses were far below average and thus the offense should have been trying as hard as possible to score as many points as possible as its first principle.

He is trying to limit the scoring. More of the run the clock while losing strategy.
For many years, I’ve said on the message boards that in many of our drives, we aren’t trying to score. This has upset quite a few people, and they asked why I say that and I answer that if you are calling plays for time of possession, field position, obsessively trying to limit turnovers, trying to avoid injuries, etc then you can’t claim you are really trying to score as your first principle.

His emphasis was always to sacrifice offensive production to keep the defense fresh. He didn’t want to have a quick hitting up tempo offense. He wants to snap the ball with 1 second on the play clock and gain 3 yards in a cloud of dust. Burn clock and don’t turn the ball over. My d will win it. That didn’t work, agains good competition, in the first tenure and sure as shite in working now.

I’ve said the same thing and was shouted down. Schiano wants Kirk to be strong between the 30’s and grind to a halt in the red zone. Field goals are the emphasis.

It gets even worse. We’ve got destroyed two games where they didn’t turnover. They do what their coach says and still lose. Not returning kicks and punts tells the team he doesn’t believe in them. Losing games after playing the way he says will have them not believing in him. What a mess.

That is true, I left that off of the list. If your defense is very good, I can at least see the logic in that, especially if you are winning in a game. Also agree it didn’t work the first time and agree that it sure attack is not going to work with a terrible defense. With this defense, you should be going out on every drive and trying to get a touchdown.

There is something to be said for swagger and you aren’t going to have any when the entire game plan is around not making mistakes, even down to the idea that you can’t take a risk because you might lose a few yards on a play.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS 10000000X.....he simply REFUSES to change how he does things, in-game let alone overall, and gives us ZERO chance to win winnable games.

So I just started watching the press conference and literally the very first comment that he makes is (paraphrasing) that to win the turnover battle, and the time of possession, they did enough things to win.

For anybody who is not 100% certain about the way this head coach goes about trying to win, let this really sink in and give it some thought.
