I would not say it had never happened. Dr. Z overriding Templetoes and bringing in King Jackie was pretty disruptive. The difference in that and 2009 was that in the latter, the president, AD and head coach were all in alignment. BUT, that also was luck, because it was Foglesong who set that disruption in motion. So truth be told I'm not sure we've ever had straight connection from the top to bottom completely.

Our system is perfectly designed to produce the results we've received. If we don't like the results, we must change the system. It starts by emphasizing football to a degree that makes everyone uncomfortable. Already I can hear the usual suspects say that's not the MSU way. No kidding. The MSU way is constantly sucking at the one sport that pays the bills.

You know what's interesting. Since Cignetti has been at IU, I haven't heard one Indiana alum complain that their basketball tradition has gone in the toilet and they haven't been relevant in a decade or more. It's funny how football success really shines a light on how unimportant everything else is.

Are you kidding? Jan’s was warm when we hired him. O’Connor was never disruptive at all.
Jans had just come off beating UCONN in the tournament and being 5 points away from upsetting the 4 seed to go to the sweet sixteen. He was a top 5 target for every school that year. For Oak. I’m no Paul Tagliabue, but If plucking a top 3 coach from a national brand team while still in his prime isn’t disruptive I don’t know what is.

Oak was very disruptive to the way MSU does things. Name any other time in our history our program alums and boosters got together and went all in on a top 5 coach in their prime? And then gave more to make sure we have the team he needs?

Football boosters are too worried about opening day of deer season to bother coming to the game....

I hate these blowhards that act like they completely have the pulse of the AD without being in on those conversations themselves. Jans was white hot when we hired him. O’Connor was completely disruptive. This isn’t LT and his troughs.
Cohen was more disruptive than OC. OC just seemed that way because Lemon had gotten so lazy. But he's really just a continuation and improvement over what we had been doing from 2010-2021 or so.

Either way, I do agree somewhat. I think the bigger issue is that this is a uniquely football issue for us. It's like we just do not know what we're doing there.

I have never bought into the idea coaches will not come here because the last coach got fired. If a coach is losing and doesn't seem to have the ability to change it, fire him. We are SEC and coaches from around the country will step on their own dicks to get into the SEC. If you are good coach and you really believe in your ability to coach, the fact the school has fired a few people will not matter. If you scared, I don't want you. Nothing wrong with wanting to win and firing bad coaches is part of the process. We gave him a shot and he missed. Time to go. We have made a lot of coaches' rich and got nothing in return.

I agree. I don't think I want a coach who is gun shy over the previous coach being fired. I want a coach who DGAF.

I don't understand the "disruption on campus and in Starkville, and people did not like it". Byrne was the best AD we've ever had, and Mullen was at least as good a coach we've ever had. Other than them both leaving sort of abruptly, most people I know liked both of them.
Exactly. After the Croom disaster, everyone you talked to was excited the program was going in the right direction.

I will add, however, that I remember Mullin complaining about how hard it was to get athletic department employees to do ANYTHING differently than the way they had always done them.

Some State fans always have a conspiracy as to why this or that has transpired. If not for those pesky administrators sabotaging....... State's football program would rival Alabama's.****

I'm of the opinion that most of the people that post on this board care about football, but the majority of both our alumni and the few sidewalk fans we have, are lukewarm towards the sport. Why that is has always puzzled me.
Our fans are only lukewarm towards football because we have had such limited success. When we are worth a ****, our fans are definitely not lukewarm towards the sport.

The disruption that Byrne & Mullen brought (and people on campus & in Starkville did not like it) had never happened & may never happen again in our lifetime.

I won’t pretend to know all the behind the scenes dealings with O’Connor, but I would guess it wasn’t all ZS. Whatever the formula was, we’re going to have to use something similar for the football coach, if we go that way. I do remember when Howland was hired, a couple of big alumni stepped in and helped guide the search. And by “helped guide,” I mean they told them who they were going to hire.

Byrne literally hired an assistant, not a sitting HC LOL. We just saw Selmon make the best baseball ever too, so his nonsense is still nonsense. Byrne got the hell out in a hurry too.

Unfortunately the biggest part of the formula in getting O’Connor was having one of the best baseball programs in terms of facilities, money, fanbase & history. That’s not going to work for football or basketball.

I do believe boosters should be in conversations with the AD on who to hire. I do not think boosters should "make the hire", it should be a collective of who the AD, his hiring committee have chosen based of many factors. We need to use firms in order to identify potential coaches that have genuine interest in our job. Hiring committees that the AD has identified including himself should have interviews. Then have meetings with key boosters to discuss the process of who they are willing to hire.

Yep. I don't agree with half the stuff Bo says but his show is good.
State fans are as bad as the voters who refuse to vote because they don't like a candidate. It's basically waving the white flag and letting the other side do whatever they want.

I don't agree with everything Bo says, or for that matter Brandon Walker, Hardy, Hadad or anyone else who is has any sort of public facing platform. But it's a helluva lot better than letting rebels have the run of public spaces as it used to be. Every politician and newspaper man in the state used to be a rebel homer, and it sucked. I don't understand the unrelenting bashing of Bo for basically no reason other than he pushes his advertisers a lot. I don't even like 4 Roses, but I damn sure understand why he talks about it so much. I'm also a capitalist.

But our fans beat the shiit out of him more than olemiss fans do. I swear some State fans would be more comfortable if david kellum had a morning show.

It’s gonna take a Forward state movement. It can be done but we have to get off our asses and make it happen. We also need to change our attitude within the fan base. That has to be done. The negative needs to go away.
I would say that a huge part of OM being what they are today is because of the attitude of their fanbase always believing they were better than they truly were. They thought they deserved more and they did what it took to get it. We always expect the worse and are never surprised when it comes.
