Alex wins with a late TD - looks like he is not ready to give up his spot so easy
Disappointing loss for Norman, I was hoping he would wrestle better. Good for Facundo but I am concerned we have already seen who Facundo is. Excited about Mikey White beating an All American quality senior. I see Little beat Merrill in overtime, does the M mean medical forfeit?

Yes. Head to head collision and Panda went wobbly and may have been out for a second.

In the semi's when Dee did not get a major against much of an opponent, I thought that is something I have seen a lot of in the past and then he loses to Swiderski. To me that is 2 indications he has not advanced. Disappointing. Jayden with the win I think is a plus. I was hoping that Jordyn could push Sergio but he didn't which says great things about Vega at 149. I just saw the entry indicating he was gassed and stalling= 3rd indicator.
Dude relax. I read the X post and the crowd seemed to actively root for him to lose? No bueno. He’s still a member of your team if he doesn’t get driven off and probably should be rooting for him to improve , “gassing” may not just be a product of not improving might just have reached his physical cardio-peak who knows. Him improving would be a boon so that’s what people should be rooting for as opposed to against him.

Jayden beats tagen. they swapped takedowns but Jayden is pretty good on top a got riding time. Sergio treated Jordan like a red headed step child! Total domination wow. I thought it would be close.
I think the Vega-Raney result is more about a reigning national champion rolling with another reigning national champion (Jax) for nearly a year now, and possibly jumping levels. Says more about how great Vega can be/is than where Raney is at.

Im not understanding that logic? It gives a pretty telling tale, although a sample of 1 is limited, of where Raney is? Doesn’t mean that’s where he’ll stay. But it dies say exactly where he stands right now.

Look at my post the last 2 days and I have maybe more than anybody was hoping to see Lockett's improvement. I pointed out Dee has an upside much higher than Casey's. The Cowboy's will be weaker without an improved Lockett and I still hope that he changes but the chances seem to be reducing. Our loss.

Dee’s match:

Everyone was pretty muted when we had Cowboy on Cowboy action… people started getting a little restless/chippy when Dee started slowing things down and going to a knee like last year. It accelerated when Dee pushed Casey (Dee was getting frustrated and shoved Casey away after a whistle). That’s when the crowd started booing Dee and trying to elevate Casey. Dee’s attitude the last period, tie breakers and ride outs was less than great and shows an almost complete return to form from last year.

Was hoping Merrill had jump levels offensively but against a longer, rangier, high caliber guy, continued to throw Hail Mary arm sweeps and re-attacks. I see a similar year for Cody, which is fine bc he’s a finalist but was hoping he’d separate himself from everyone not named Barr.

I sat by Norman’s parents during his loss. They were bummed but it’s clear they’re wrestling people (on to the next type folks). Lorenzo dominated everyone before the finals but he seemed to rely on his length too much and when Facundo neutralized that portion of his offense, he seemed to sputter. I still like his ceiling compared to Facundo.

Zinkin will be fun to watch and will be in the mix next year. I’d put money on Troy beating him consistently this year though.

Jax mentioned that he was putting more emphasis on pins this year. It showed.

Jordyn was more explosive than JJ but Jayden can definitely be AA level this year. I’d say him and Tagen are in the 3-8 range this year.

Vega dominated Jordyn primarily bc Jordyn actually wrestled him and got to legs. I’d say all but 1 or maybe 2 of Sergio’s takedowns were off Jordyn getting to a leg and it turning into a scramble situation.

Landon is a stud but will probably never be a bonus monster unfortunately.

I didn’t see Mikey White losing to Berge coming in and I certainly don’t see it leaving. White will only lose this year when he makes a rookie mistake (like getting caught in a cradle for 4). Once he eliminates that I truly think he’s a multiple time champ.

Dreshaun will make everyone but the top 5-6 guys (and maybe even them) look silly.

Overall a lot to be excited for! Troy, Jax, Vega, Landon and Ross are automatic. I wanted Jayden to be more dominate and am pleased w the point scoring potential of White. 165, 197 seem similar to last year. 174 should be a better outcome but 4-8 range right now. Can’t wait for duals and NDI!

I didn't have a problem with the fans in the 165 bout. That is what happens when you have an orange on orange match and one guy in orange acts like he wants it way worse than the other. The fans are going to cheer for the guy who is easy to cheer for. I love the way Swiderski wrestles.

White looked great. He struggled a bit getting out from bottom in the semis and then chose neutral against Berge (who is a hammer on top) in the finals. If he can clean that up and avoid freshman mistakes, the sky is the limit.

How on earth is Landon not a bonus monster? Didn’t he tech all of his opponents today?

Overall analysis of the guys! It’s a long season ahead. No clear guy at 65 or 74 in my opinion! U have to put Casey and Alex ahead based on current results!

Rocklin- as mentioned before he is the epitome of being a gunslinger with some extra swag sauce. Areas of improvement is Sometimes he can be a little wild and gets out of position. Maybe needs to get a tad stronger. Guys who hold good position and good in the hand fight will give him some problems because he’s not afraid to make a mistake but all in all I give him an A being his first time out. he will only get better with time!

Jax- it’s his world and we are just living in it. The way he handled TK Davis was so fun to watch. Of course he has three other guys in this weight class but I believe Jax is better than all in folk style!

Jayden- not impressed with his leg defense. But the kid is a goer.. He’s really tough on top. Better than I expected he pinned the one kid from Gardner Webb with a tilt. The Garden the Webb kid was up 6 to 1 before Jaden reverse him and pined him. I actually like his upside. Teagan is a really strong and good Wrestler and for him to come out and beat him says a lot about where he can be. I think he’s top eight right now. He doesn’t look really big for 141. But he has to some horse power to take down tagen.

Tagan-I love the kid. He’s strong as an ox and a really solid wrestler, but that won’t win him the spot. He’s not flashy. He’s pretty straight on with his attacks his double is his best shot and opponents will know that. I do believe he’s a top 10 141 my prayers that he doesn’t transfer in January.

Ronnie-Ronnie is a good kid, but 141 is not his best position. He looked a little undersized and he competed well but nothing to get excited about. . In his match with Teagan he really didn’t take a lot of shots and we really didn’t get to see him do what he’s capable of doing with his slick attacks in another match! He also might be the product of a stack weight. If I was another school, I would be trying to poach him.

Hughes-he’s a good college wrestler will probably be in the top 25 but again the product of a stack of weight. I’m glad he’s healthy to go.

Vega-he really surprised me against Jordan Raney. I thought for sure after I saw Jordan Russell in the semi‘s that it would be a heck of a match, but Sergio really dominated him. This was the first time I saw Sergio score multiple times from his attacks and not other people‘s attacks so for me that is progress from last year. He’s the champ for a reason. I’m looking forward to him wrestling some of the other top guys. Still hasn’t been taken down yet, but there was a point like last year where it looked like he was dead rights!

Jordan Raney-I really like the kid. I would like to see him against other top guys! Sometimes rolling with someone long enough and spending time with them personally I believe the big Brother syndrome can kick in. Not taking anything away from Sergio because he took him to the woodshed but definitely wasn’t what I expected from him in that match. his semifinals against Hickman I was impressed with his pace at his output. He is a goer. And I look forward to his growth. He’s not a big 149 I bet at 141 he could do real damage but of course his brother is there.

Landon- he’s the man! Thought he would tech him but a good scrap by his finals opponent!

Casey- he is tough and of course with this tournament he should be the leader. I believe he was better than Dee today, but I saw his semifinals with Cody and I walked away thinking that Cody is better than Casey. Casey conducted himself like a savy veteran and I expect him to keep using his grit to show some production. I’m not sure if he will hold the spot the entire season. I see Casey as an an all American contender.

Dee- he looks limited because he’s thinking too much and not flowing. I wish he could hand fight a little better. Him not being able to get multiple takedowns a match is a digression from the last two years. Casey isn’t a defensive genius. And the guy Powe isn’t a world beater. It’s between the ears for that young man. Hopefully he can find some solace somewhere.

Cody-had to be kicking himself for missing out on those takedowns against Casey. To me he looked like the best 165 on the team and I’m not saying that facetiously. It’s a long season so we will see how it goes. If it’s me, I’m in the room right now getting mental eps of where I made mistakes.

Alex F-he looked really good! it’s funny how competition makes you elevate. My hope is that with the addition of the Stanford kid he can keep that same level of intensity and consistency. The only thing is his track record of big tournaments still is evidence that proves he doesn’t show up for the big dance. Let’s just hope this is a new season.

Notman- I forgot his name. Sorry guys he looked a little sloppy tonight. I am not counting him out for the starting spot. I do believe that he is a really good prospect as well, but I think the two battling for the spot will be the best for the team and for them both.

White- the kid is an athlete. He’s strong. He’s quickand he’s mean and so that can go a long way. He handled Bennett every which way which was very surprising. The only knock I would have on this kid is that he has mental lapses in some of his matches ala his semifinals match where he got cradle and he stopped wrestling for a moment in that sequence of getting ridin. I also can go back to other matches when he was in high school where mental lapses popped up from time to time. Those things just don’t go away. You have to correct them overtime and I think he has the right attitude to refine himself into a well oiled machine. The kid is major problem in the making.

berge- ran into a stud freshman and I’m not sure he will have a spot. Zach will also have have a fight to find a spot.

Cody- hopefully he’s OK.. I see him and the kid from Little Rock as a Toss up every time. He still seems like the same kid from last year and that is not a bad thing or an indictment on him. He will continue to get better as time goes forward. He is a really good kid.

Ross-the kid is a dynamic athlete. He’s fast strong and when he puts on more size he will almost be unstoppable. As of right now, he still needs to work on finishing some of his shots. He will get in on anyone so he has to continue to work on he’s finishes. This is not a breakdown of just this tournament. It’s just from what I’ve seen from him at worlds and against other top competition. We have a great heavyweight and I’m excited about his future..

Sorry for the long post, but I felt like posting my breakdown for fans like myself.

I was going to do something similar but you saved me time bc mostly echo your sentiments 100% agree on 165. Casey most savvy, Dee most talented but Kody looked the best. Also, not a fan of how crowd reacted in that match. I understand not thrilled with how he wrestled and even cheering Casey, but to boo him? Man stinks to have your own crowd root for someone else, but you can understand if both on the same team but would be tough to hear them boo you. Especially bc Dee is a Stillwater kid.

To me, similar situation at 174. Facundo won and savvy but Norman looked better, even if a bit sloppy, I think he believed his lead was safe so didn’t go as hard to finish a shot or two he was in on, then tried to play defense and got caught in the end.

I agree on 149 too. I don’t think that match says much about Jordyn, I think Sergio is just that good and may have made a significant jump, hard as it is to believe with the level he reached last year. And it may be necessary that he did, bc 149 is a hammer filled weight (I’m not saying 141 was a cake walk last year)

At 197, Cody looked a little improved to me. I saw him create more openings than I remember him having last year, he just needs to take a few of them when they come along. Him and Little will be toss up unless he does so.

Casey showed the entire match he wanted it more than Dee and Dee definitely did not win approval from the fans for his antics after the match. He wrestled just like last year. I don't like to see an OSU wrestler booed but he brought it on himself. I think that Casey, Dee and Routledge are very close and who knows who will win the position permanently unless Dee with his superior athletic ability will actually USE it.

First real action of the season today so got my wrestling fix finally. Some guys picked up where they left off ( we know who they are) and we have some young talent to be excited about. I say this with love, don't put too much thought into some performances. I love the guy but I don't expect casey to hold down 165. Also anticipate a couple of other lineup changes from what it looks like today by the time it really counts in March.

We have some great true freshmen again with Dreshaun, Jayden, and Mikey looking like starters. Jordyn and Rocklin look very good also. It would not surprise me if we had a true freshman National Champ this year ( Dreshaun). Our sophomore defending National Champs look like title contenders again with Jax, Sergio and Landon. I think Robideau will be much improved this year with his motivation, great talent and commitment to wrestling. Our weakest weight classes right now are 165, 174 and 184. If we don't improve a bunch in these weight classes it will cost us against Penn. St. in our attempt for 35. Mikey White has improved a bunch already in the room and that improvement should continue thru the year. Raney at 141 should continue to get a lot better thru the year. Sergio improved thru the year where he looked like he could be an All American and then at some point likely All American to a high All American. The finals night he beats the seemingly untouchable 2 time National Champ from Ohio State and stuns everyone but a few and wins. I was pulling for him to stay close and then he shocks me and wins. Hopefully our freshmen improve like Sergio. Landon was a great shocker also. He improved, seemed to stagnate and then jumped to a whole new level at Nationals.

The biggest surprise to me is the jump in confidence from our 3 NCs from last year. Jax is Jax but he has gone from youthful exuberance from last year to "I'm going to tech you and there's nothing that you can do about it".
Landan isn't built to score many bonus points but his workman like attitude is fun to watch. He reminds me of Alex D.
Sergio is the biggest surprise. I was worried that the weight jump would take away his biggest advantage from last year but he is still huge at the new weight. He seems to feel stronger with the weight and I expect him to chase bonus points this year.
Can our 149 pound Raney drop to 141. He is too good to be on the bench.

The difference between Jax's style and Landon's is fun to watch. Landon absolutely mauls a guy for seven minutes, the poor SOB is exhausted and looks like he wants to quit wrestling forever, but the score is 12-2.

Meanwhile, Jax techs someone in 90 seconds and the opponent isn't even sweating, he just looks around confused and smiles at his coaches, like 'what the f*** just happened."

Everyone Jax Wrestled took the whistle as an alarm to bully Jax.

it didn’t work haha.

I’m curious if that’s what we’re going to see? Wild clubbing and hand fighting? It was chaotic at times.

Yeah, the fan reaction to Dee wasn’t good and pretty poor form.

He just needs to pull the trigger more. Casey Wrestled him exactly how you beat him and it almost didn’t work.
Agreed. I don't understand the fan logic of 'hating' on a cowboy wrestler. Guy behind me in the arena was talking and shouting like Dee was a POS human....at the end of the day he is a cowboy and a teammate to Swiderski. If I'm David Taylor, I'm telling them both that the performance in the finals is not going to get you on the podium in March. Neither guy wrestled until OT and it will be hard to win multiple matches at NCAA's with that style. Hopefully this match will ignite something in both guys to go out there and score points.

Mikey White was IMPRESSIVE....BUT, I think Zack Ryder beats him this year. Ryder is excellent at slowing down matches and guys do not get to his legs very easily. I think Ryder uses his underhooks to win a boring/convincing 3-1 type match.

Merrill....looks exactly the same as last year. Somewhere between 2nd-5th place. I kept hoping he would pick up the intensity in his hand fight/snaps/pulls, etc. He is still holding on. Compare that to a guy like Barr, who is always push, pull, snap, faking.

My end of year line up prediction...

125 - Spratley
133 - Jax
141 - Raney
149 - Sergio
157 - Robideau
165 - Dee
174 - Norman

184 - Ryder
197 - Merrill
285 - Ross
141 - Raney - Which one? Chances that Jordyn goes down and compete for 141?

As someone who likes both Dee and Swid I find it odd how people treat one verse the other. Swid wasn't exactly super aggressive and he was doing plenty of complaining. Swid won and should be the guy to start the season. Went and got a TD when it mattered. Dee is way too in his own head.

The booing of Dee was utterly embarrassing. I'm rarely embarrassed by our fans, but I thought it was terrible.
