How in the world did Swain get a home game at 2-7 and Avery has to travel at 3-7? I mean neither deserves a playoff game let alone a home game. That just puzzles me....

The only thing the NCHSAA is doing, is letting way too many teams into the playoffs. The NCHSAA doesn't control your OOC schedule or how good any team is. Teams should know the RPI formula by now and how it works.

Also, forfeiting the game still gives you a loss, so schedule better teams to help the OWP.

Swain's OWP was 13% higher than Avery's. Langtree's final RPI is only .0089 higher than Avery, so Avery could have had a home game if they played better competition.

Technically they get to be at home during the first round, so that has to count for something.
I didn't know when I first posted that the team that was going to play Mitchell opted out. But do you think Swain deserves a home game and Mitchell doesn't? I don't see what's so funny about me saying Mitchell deserves a home game lol Swain got beat bad by Rosman Rosman got beat bad by Owen and Owen got beat bad by Mitchell so how do you think Swain would fair against Mitchell just asking lol? And I'm a Heritage fan btw.

Either way they've got starmount in the 2nd or 3rd round lol I'm just saying I don't think it's laughable to say Mitchell deserves a home game over Swain.

First, I laughed because I thought you were being funny as Mitchell has a bye. If they didn't have a bye, they would be playing at home in week 1. So I guess the argument is, is it better to suck and have a bye week or to suck and host a bad first round playoff game?

I don't think Swain or Mitchell should have a bye or home game in the playoffs.

If you want my honest opinion, they need to cut the playoffs down to a total of 32 teams (16 west and 16 east). I've outlined this in another forum. If I find it, I'll post it in here shortly. The amount of teams that make the playoffs are beyond ridiculous and to be honest, it wastes the time of the players, coaches and puts good teams at risk playing a pointless game.

Here is the post where I talked about too many teams making the playoffs and how the help NCHSAA not lose out on money, since money seems to be what drives it.

I understand the money aspect of it, but at the same time, how much money would they really be losing out on? Half of the first and probably a fourth of the second round games, aren't good anymore. With almost all of the teams making the playoffs, you see a lot of blowouts or teams that have already played each other in the first round.

Based on the handbook,
  • 0-75 miles one way, for the away team gets $270 for food.
  • 76-149 miles, $270 for food and .75 per mile.
  • 150 miles and up, the away team gets $360 for motel costs if they stay.
Officials for playoffs are $110 - $128 per official depending on round, with rounds 1 & 2 having teams of 5 and rounds 3+ having 7 (I believe that is the correct round it increases).

After those expenses are NCHSAA then gets a percentage of net gate sales.
  • 15% for rounds 1 & 2
  • 20% for round 3
  • 25% for round 4
  • 33% for regional games.
I can only image that some of those first round games are losing money for the schools. I could potentially agree on 32 teams per classification, but if you went to 16 teams, you could charge an extra $1 per round (I know, no one wants to pay more, but you would also be going to less games) and increase the percentage (a point or two) per round and NCHSAA would still make plenty of money. With some of these smaller/weaker schools barely funding teams as it is, some of these far 1st and 2nd round games, in which most of these teams don't even belong in, are killing the boosters and will eventually not have support.

I think the NCHSAA will cut the playoffs by a round this year. 48 teams has proven to be too many, and they didn't want to do it last year before an entire season of the new system had even finished.

Programs with a couple or three wins do not belong in the state playoffs. They don’t deserve to be. When I was in high school years ago, and my high school played way up in the old 3A, only one team in the conference (the conference champ) was eligible for the state. Sorry Elkin, Avery, South Stokes just don’t deserve to be in the final race.

Hard to do just conference champs anymore with how they have eight classifications and so many split conferences, but there's no reason that you need more than the top 32. That's still 50%+ of each classification.

It matters because kids aren't earning it. Not to mention, you can't tell me a team that has won a game or two is looking forward to travel to a team like Murphy, Tarboro, Reidsville, Shelby, etc. Not everyone deserves to be in the playoffs. Teams/players should have put in more work when it mattered. Just for the sake of the argument, if the teams did put in the work in the offseason and still can't win more than a game, they obviously didn't put in the work and just went through the motions or they just aren't good.

Because it creates a lot of problems between travel and forfeits, especially in smaller sports. The 48-team bracket hasn't created more parity.

I'm from a state where every team made the playoffs, but they used a sectional system, so you'd play the schools closest to you. That won't work with North Carolina's system where schools are traveling three hours to lose by running clock.
