I love love Gurdak and he was probably the most NIL. Its not that I think the other 3 (taking out the other center for a second) are bad, I just think that you could have combined the NIL of those three and got a difference maker swing forward.
Maybe - but you could have the issue we might end up having with Sydnor with anyone - and then what? Sydnor was reportedly looking great in June. Then he suffered a high ankle sprain. It’s a really tough injury to recover from and even once you can return to sport it doesn’t mean you’ll be 100% for a while and some guys never get their full explosive speed back. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the problem with going all in on one guy. If Sydnor recovers we will compete. If not, it’ll be hard.

Not saying it isn't a gamble, it's your choice, guaranteeing a .500 team no matter who gets injured or having a shot at a 20 win season and getting into the tournament if we get lucky with injuries.

Yeah having several younger guys at the end of your bench that you can develop to build depth when you only brought in one HS recruit is a bad thing. 🤦‍♂️
I don’t disagree with the general point, but Martin seemed like a throw away pick up. Highly unlikely to be what you described. I thought we should’ve taken a local kid for that spot. Otherwise no major questions from me.

The point I’m making was - I think Sydnor was good enough to fill the role your talking about. We weren’t getting a starter from a P4 no matter what even if we spent more. The question is whether he can help us after this injury. It’s a hard one to bounce back from.

I know some wanted to go big but we didn’t have the NIL to do that. This was always a two year process in my book because they had to stop the bleeding of have to replace 8+ players. If the staff makes it to next season, then they can spend on higher end guys because they won’t need to replace as many bodies.

I guess that is where we disagree. I like Sydnor, but I don't think he comes in being a guaranteed impact player. And now that he's hurt we'll never know.

Too many transfers or Euros? I’m actually happy with all 5 transfers we picked up.

Martin is thir head scratcher for me. I don’t get what we were thinking there. Could’ve taken a local walk on.
I don’t know what the thinking process was for Steve and Sullivan, but by the time we got to the portal and international players, no local guys are available. They were all signed elsewhere, I’m talking about high school recruits. I get that Martin, based in limited highlights, does not look like a high impact player. If he does not show promise, you don’t bring him back next year.

There are a lot of assumptions there, especially that the sum of Smith, Jones and ? NIL would be enough to get an elite forward. And as we have seen with Dylan and Ace, having a couple of elite guys but lacking quality depth is not a path to 20 wins.

The point is it never really sounded like he even projects to be better than a walk on so why not just take a loc kid like that for the spot? I wasn’t implying we could get some good local player. More that recruiting a Euro kid who is a stretch flyer doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I'll go to my grave to say Pike screwed that team up It should have been a tournament team.

The old cliche of taking the local kid over letting the coach determine who fits best for what he wants out of the spot.

I agree on local. And we have some euro for roster spot 15 and paid him money? Why? Just sign some NJ kid and give him a shot. We aren’t going to play 15 and many guys will leave yearly anyway

I don’t think we disagree, I think we have different pictures of what the realistic options were financially. An impact high major PF from the portal was going to cost us more than the other 3 transfers probably did combined. We needed parts - desperately needed to add a better backcourt defender with length. Jones looks to provide that. We couldn’t not add there at all. So if not him it would have to be someone else.

The 15th spot went to 17 y/o Mervedi Miteo, are you saying that was a mistake?

100% - probably never plays for us in any meaningful way - most guys transfer every year so why waste money there when you can get a NJ kid for less or free for 15th spot
That was a trick question because he's not close to being the 15th player on the roster. That is likely a tie between Wooten and Tonejc this year.

Wooten is a different type of “15”. He’s a frosh recruit with talent who might actually see spurts of time by year end. Martin is a soft Euro who is unlikely to see any meaningful time on a D1 team anywhere.

They are diamonds in the rough. Everyone thought Griffiths was going to be a sure thing. Let them develop and see whether they hit on any.

Everyone else made sense. Martin is basically selecting a walk on from abroad. There’s no role for him on the team. It’s highly doubtful he sticks around to develop. We haven’t retained a single one of these Euro guys we’ve brought in after year one so far. Martin a significantly lower level player than the others coming in.

That still doesn't support using the last ship on a local kid. The staff clearly thinks he offers something that a local kid didn't.

Can’t we get a local walk on?

It’s highly doubtful he offers anything. Hasn’t checked in once yet. In exhibition play…. It’s the 15th spot so it’s not a big deal but it seems silly to go to Europe for it. Euros seem to be far less likely to stick around if it doesn’t work out in year one.
