The guy is giving away 11 billion dollars directly to America’s children next year and you lunatics are lying and wailing that he doesn’t contribute enough. Pathetic.

I’m not sure where I stand on the rich not paying more.
On one side, it seems like they would be able to pay more in taxes because they have plenty of money to do so.
on the other side, why should someone making a lot of money have to pay more because they are successful and making a lot of money.
If I had way too much money, I like to think I would be donating a lot of it. It has to be a much better feeling donating your money opposed to the government taking it from you.

I agree with that premise, but I also think there should be a flat tax...no way should billionaires be paying a far smaller percentage than the average person

I’m all for exploring a flat tax, but under that model, lower earners would obviously have to pay more than the exceptionally low rates they pay today.

Oh and Virgina Foxx is a stupid ****

Can you show us Musk's tax return?

Do you realize that part of Bernie's claim is that Musk pays the same SS tax as a person making $184k? Of course that's true but this is because benefits are also capped. Do you realize that Bernie's claim is based on the fact that Tesla Stock price went up and Musk didn't pay taxes on that?

If you bought a home for $200k but now it's worth $400k you haven't paid tax on that appreciation. Are you as guilty as Musk? Are you paying less than 3%? What about your 401-k? Have you paid income tax on how much the value has increased?

The USA has a $40 trillion debt and we're adding $2 trillion per year. I think we need the ultra wealthy to pay more just to make a dent in the deficit. But Foxx was being generous saying the 3% number was a half truth. It was completely dishonest.

So the kind of guy I would’ve hired to handle a specific task.

Regardless of what you think of their politics:

Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, MacKenzie Scott, Michael Bloomberg, and even Elon Musk are some of the biggest philanthropists in the country. Andrew Carnegie build 2,500 libraries across the world. Tom Gollisano has his name all over children's hospitals and universities and he's not the only one. Many who haven't given much so far have their money tied up in the companies they own - companies that employ people and provide products and services we all enjoy.

It's fair to debate tax rates but acting like the creators as evil people who have screwed the rest of us over is naive.

Ahhhhh, those poor billionares.......................We should go back to the 50s when they paid a 90% rate

What right do you or anyone else have to take the majority of someone's earnings? That's just morally wrong.

1% starts at $507K for individuals or $705K for households btw. Very, very, very, very, very far from billionaire or even ultra wealthy status. And most pay huge tax rates thanks to our very progressive tax structure.

While ultimately I don't disagree with your premise, i think most peoples issue is when you have one individual, or a handful of individuals, being able to singlehandedly influence elections by dumping tens/hundreds of millions into elections. While I personally disagree with the concept of there being billionaires, or trillionaires for that matter, I don't really agree with the confiscation of someone's assets barring them doing something illegal and it being the punishment.

Bloomberg/Soros/Musk/Andreesen/Uihlein/Koch/etc shouldn't be able to spend the kind of money they are on elections. Furthermore, churches/unions/etc shouldn't be able to do it either.

How do you reconcile the "answer" from the left being to raise taxes on people making $400K+? For the life of me, I can't figure out what this income level has to do with billionaires or trillionaires.

I can't, except only to use the Biden administration's answer as it being an increase on the historical benchmarks from previous democratic administrations ($200k for Bill and $250k for Obama). I didn't think it should be that low, and I'm pretty sure i've said it before that I supported a threshold of around $1m/year in income.

However, even though the $400k threshold would've impacted my wife and I, i'm not going to really cry about losing an additional 2.6% on any dollar earned over that amount via income. My bigger issue with his tax plan was always going to be removing step-up basis; not so much the income tax change.

To be fair, I think removing the SS cap would be a far more egregious and illogical tax increase than a more modest tax increase on people earning $400K+. But neither should be considered.

If the left has identified billionaires as the problem and that's their core message, they should propose a tax that only addresses the stated problem and leaves the rest of us alone.

I agree with your SS take, and your statement about the dems needing to better address their core message/policies to directly impact the super high earners and not low 6 figure individuals

What is the republican messaging and "answer" to growing deficits, a SS that will go insolvent, corporations influencing elections through spending, and government programs losing funding?

Is there even a way to tax billionaires? Most of their wealth is in stocks that they borrow against. The more wealth you have, the more the system is rigged in your favor to avoid taxes.

The big issue with the ultra wealthy isn’t taxes, it’s that they have a tremendous power to influence policy and even elections. I would think even the purest free market capitalist could see how that’s a problem.

I agree with you. The billionaire thing is simply a misleading talking point the democrats use.

And we need to get all of the extreme money out of politics. There should be real campaign finance reform, contribution limits, campaign spend limits, etc.

It's an income tax,... If you want to take more money from people who own a lot of stuff you'll have to reach deeper than "income".
