Tired of seeing Moreno out front handling the ball

This BS offense where the center “initiates” — sick of it! Moreno isn’t a great passer, can’t shoot a 3, ain’t gonna drive…why?? Put his *** under the basket where he belongs! At least they have to guard him just because he’s 7ft. Let your PF set a ball screen if you want a ball screen!

Didn’t watch tonight and based on comments made from the exhibition Games I may not watch much at all this year. I’m sure I will tune in for the big name games but highly doubt I bother watching the fluff games (which undoubtedly we might end up losing one or two of them). I typically get pissed during games like Kansas, UNC, Louisville, etc but doubt I do this year. I’m just going into those games expecting a loss. Hard to get mad when your expectations are met.

I hate this offense cause it’s the only thing we run, kill the shot clock down to 5 secs then throw up something wild. Meanwhile our 7’0 PF & center are trying to initiate the offense like magic. If that curl off the initial handoff isn’t there, we are going to turnover it over or take a terrible shot.

Moreno did shoot 2 threes & had a double double with 8 assists. w/ +/- of +24.
Should have gone 30 - 20 -10 -3 if things fell his way.
If he improves as much as last year during season - Going to be a Beast.
He shot two but missed them both lol
Milan pretty much said on KSR the other day when they were both on that MM isn’t a good 3 pt shot…and he wasn’t joking around either. It concerned me when he said it, as I was hoping MM might have improved his shot. Looks like Milan is right unfortunately

I will give you the 3 pt shooter but he had 8 assist, looked to me like he could pass, maybe passes the ball better than the guards. I do admit I like to see the ball go into the big in the paint and then pass out for a 3, but that is how I coached, every coach has his own plan.

It's not concerning to me since we don't need threes from him. We need him taking shots at the rim.

I certainly agree, but Pope is gonna have him out front come hell or high water and IF that’s the case…sure would be nice if he was a 37-38% shooter.
He can start out front but he can't stay there long. I wish Pope would realize that the pick and roll might be old fashioned but it still works...watching our opponents should tell him that.

And Pope struggles to get an elite PG. Go figure.

Malachi Moreno's passing and ball handling as a true freshman in the SEC last year were almost exactly the same as Amari Williams' cumulative-averaged passing and ball handling resume playing four years in the freaking Colonial Athletic Association before he got to Kentucky. All the rest of it is spin and hype. Not to mention we've got people bitching about his passing on a night he had eight ******g assists.

Moreno will be absolutely fine running zoom action offense* for us as long as he stays healthy. He will be a huge asset to this team that can really use every huge asset it can get despite potentially happy surprises in Williams and Hawthorne. Doubt me at your own risk.

*the same offense that we didn't run last year because Pope gave up teaching it to most of that team even though MM handled it well the few cycles he ran. The same offense that took down eight top-15 opponents Pope's first year. Hopefully we'll have the guard play to see that through. If we don't it won't be Moreno's fault.

I mean out of all things to complain about this is not one of them. Moreno almost had a triple double. What we need to do more of, like in overtime, is run the offense through Milan. He can do more than just shoot. Also, Mason needs to be the full time PG with Zoom coming off the bench for 12-16 min per game.

I’m not sure this coach has a plan.

I’ve been saying this for two years. Dumbest offense I’ve ever seen. Take your best interior scorer, rebounder, shot blocker and move him away from his position.

Better get used to it since the sunshine pumpers blamed point guard injuries for Pope’s 2 failed seasons, he went out and got a point guard from a team with a losing record and another guy that if we didn’t hire his dad then we would have not won a game yet

Agreed. Id be happy if Pope had a better eye for underrated prospects like Williams instead of whiffing on all the top players. Go get a team full of three and four stars that want it bad.
There is nothing wrong with that if the coaching staff can develop them like Cignetti.

Last year’s team was an abomination and disgusting but if you think Butler and Krissa going down and then at times having to play Robinson and then a freshman Travis Perry at PG wasn’t detrimental to that team, there’s no use in talking basketball with you.

Mason Williams is an elite point guard.
2 assists and 2 turnovers last night in 29 minutes.
0 assists and 0 turnovers against TT in 27 minutes.
3 assist and 1 turnovers against LR in 21 minutes.

He has scored very well. His D has been good. His play has been good but not sure he has shown he’s an elite PG at running the offense.

It may be Pope’s insistence that a big be initiating the offense. He may end up the best option but I wouldn’t say that he has been elite.

I love the kid. He just “gets it” and needs all the minutes right now and then some. This is more about Pope’s style of play and attracting elite ball handling guards.

Having Amari be successful with this is almost hurting Popes coaching. He thinks every big can do that. Amari was a special passer!

Core Pillars of Modern NBA Offense

• Pace and Space: Offenses maximize floor geometry by surrounding elite drivers and creators with capable three-point shooters, forcing help defenders to make split-second choices between guarding the rim or the perimeter.
• Positional Fluidity: Traditional position labels (point guard, center) have faded; big men like Nikola Jokić or Victor Wembanyama initiate offense, pass out of the post, or shoot from deep, while guards set screens and roll.
• High-Frequency Actions: Teams lean into high ball screens, Spain pick-and-rolls, handoffs (zoom actions), and early-offense transition concepts like 21 pistol rather than rigid, static half-court playbooks.
• The Death of Mid-Range (With Exceptions): Analytics devalued inefficient long twos for role players, shifting shot selection almost exclusively to shots at the rim or behind the arc—though elite scorers still weaponize the mid-range against aggressive drop coverages and switches

Impossibly stupid and shows your low knowledge of basketball.

bro has 8 assists in the 3rd exhibition of the season come half way through the season he’ll be a legitimate threat at passing to cutters and getting other guys open.
And if he keeps shooting threes? Can’t leave anyone of us open makes team x 10 more dangerous
Moreno ain’t Demarcus cousins and to shoe horn him in there is just not something coaches do in the 2020’s

Maybe you should’ve watched because we definitely ain’t losing fluff games and we are imo better than a lot of higher ranked teams

LOL. Young man, I’ve forgotten more about basketball than you’ll ever know.
You also apparently lack reading comprehension. I‘m not dogging Moreno, I’m criticizing Pope’s offense. As another poster said, it’s gimmicky, and ineffective unless you have a real triple threat guy out there. Which we don’t.

Hey young blood you better calm down I’ve pissed more knowledge than you’ll ever know

also 8 assists isn’t gimmicky, it isn’t ineffective and 16 pts 14 rebounds and 8 assists is the definition of triple threat.

Your basketball comprehension is lacking

A triple threat guy can drive it, shoot it, and pass it—Moreno isn’t a three point threat, and can’t drive it. He’s a decent passer. One outta three. Which tells me he doesn’t need to be where his coach insists on playing him. Again, my issue is with Pope, not MM, I like the kid and he’s a valuable piece for us.
Done with this discussion. You don’t wanna have a respectful conversation, as evidenced by your first reply, and I don’t come on this board to be drawn into those type of debates.

Off the bat Whatever your saying about triple threat is just an opinion triple threat can mean anything in basketball, so automatically your wrong

Your main point is you think his offense sucks and doesn’t work but seems to be doing good so far your just sad and even though our player gets almost a triple double and you still ***** and moan because you want pope to play some old school offense that is simply not what he does. Go coach your own team

And also

don’t comment lmao. I love when people comment some BS and then go “end of discussion” when they are unwilling to defend themselves. If your opinion cannot take scrutiny then that’s just weak.

Your generation has no sense of respect for elders
