Always a fun article from Pomeroy every season (adds no "basketball" value, but I always find it interesting)...

Villanova has quit the Big Five.
I remember watching these games around 1965 on Channel 17. It was the early days of cable TV.
Les Keiter was the announcer and he had some wild descriptions for shots. "In again, out again finigan". "Ring tail howitzer".

As we enter another season, here is my 2026-2027 list of NCAA Head Coaches with PSU connections...
  • Joe Crispin - Air Force - Joe's first season, and he has a interesting squad. They weren't very good last season, but they will be one of the most experienced teams in the country and one where they pretty much return their entire roster (incredibly rare these days).
  • Dan Earl - Chattanooga - Dan's 5th season at Chattanooga. They took a bit of a step back last year, so hopefully he can get a bit of a rebound (though they don't look great on paper).
  • Rob Summers - Cleveland St - Rob's second season. They struggled in the Horizon last year, and I'd expect more of the same this season.
  • Pat Chambers - Florida Gulf Coast - Pat's 5th season in Fort Myers. Still a lot of PA/South Jersey influence in his roster (including PSU transfer Justin Houser).
  • Jon Perry - Navy - Former PSU Assistant Jon's 2nd season at Navy after replacing DeChellis.
  • Micah Shrewsberry - Notre Dame - Micah's 4th season at ND. Wasn't expecting too much, but they went out and upset Villanova in the opener yesterday.
  • Adam Fisher - Temple - Former PSU Assistant Adam's 4th season at Temple.
  • Jim Ferry - UMBC - Jim's 6th season at UMBC. They are coming off an NCAA trip last year after winning the America East.
  • Brian Earl - William & Mary - adding in the family connection, as Dan's younger brother (and former Princeton guard) is in his 3rd season leading a William & Mary program that's still searching for their first NCAA tournament appearance.

Good luck to Joe! Easy to root for the academies and Joe was one of my favorite players.

Biggest surprise of opening night...Oklahoma lost as a home, 29 point favorite (opened at 30.5) to East Texas A&M. Porter Moser's seat has to be scalding.

Big Al Meltzer also on Big Five Bball. Fabulous history. Yes, Les Kitter was great.
