We have 15 guys on the roster all getting paid and/or a schollie which is money. Yet at best we end up with an 8-9 man rotation which most good teams settle on

playing more guys often means we don’t have enough good guys standing out

them the guys that don’t play most likely leave

15 feels like a lot - guess we ga e to see how it goes

You realize that a couple of these guys were either end of bench types or developmental (Wooten, int'l guys) and not expected to play much?

But it cost money between NIL and a scholie so is it better to spread your money over 13 or 15?

Plus it drives me nuts to pay all this for a euro guy to be #15 and prob never play. Can’t we find some NJ kid to give it to? We are The State U of NJ. Just don’t get the economics.

I don't know if they would have upgraded much by having two fewer players since we don't have access to what each player's contract calls for. A couple of these guys probably have performance type clauses based on how much they play and their output.

The Euro big that came in late, he's 17, I could be wrong, but it will take a year or two before he's likely ready serious minutes. He's going to make a lot more in future years than this year.

The “euro guy” can’t get NIL or any $s from the $20.5M (visa regs).

The staff believes Miteo will be an NBA player.
Size, shape and general athleticism Miteo is the most likely guy on the team to be the 13th man on an NBA bench. Buca is second and no one else gets a sniff. That doesn't make them great or good college ballers.

Buca barely played last year. He’s no Mara despite being the same size. He will be lucky to average 5-7 mpg. NBA? Come on?

Is Miteo another Cliff/obole? One could jump out of the building. One could put muscle a mile. Neither were had hoops IQ like a Myles Johnson

Revised PT projections (conservative assumption Sydnor does not recover to contribute):

At 1 => Lino 30, J Mike 10
At 2 => Tariq 30, Jones 10
At 3 => Smith 15, Jones 15, Powers/Diego 10
At 4 => Buchanan 25, Smith 15
At 5 => Gurdak 30, Miteo/Ware/Buca 10

Lino / Tariq / Smith / Gurdak ~ 30
Buchanan / Jones ~ 25
Back up PG / center / wings ~ 10

obviously it’s early and very much subject to change. Sydnor fighting back from injury. Chris and Diego will get their chances against cupcakes to carve a role. Powers has a lot of work to do IMO to justify PT.

If Buchanan is playing more than 25 mpg I don't think we'll be very good.

Do you have some sort of inside information on Sydnor? I’m hoping this is just an academic exercise.

No information at all. But high ankle injuries suck. They are hard to recover from and he looked nowhere near ready.

I think Sydnor will blow by him by the end of the season.

Sydnor will not average over 30 minutes. There’s nobody else to share time at the 4. So he’s getting a min of 10 there. Then look at the 3. It’d be awfully bold to assume Diego will be playing 20+ mpg when he didn’t even check in to SJU. Seems doubtful. I don’t see Powers getting time over Buchanan at the 3 either. So where are those minutes going? Jones will get some of them. Smith. but there’s no way Buchanan doesn’t get at least 10 - and it’ll likely be more. And I bet Sydnor doesn’t average over 24.

You are pretty much where I am ( a little cut and paste and change)

At 1 => Lino 28, J Mike 12
At 2 => Tariq 30, Jones 8 JMike 2 (He played really well in the end game last year)
At 3 => Smith 30, Jones 10
At 4 => Buchanan 20, Sydnor 20
At 5 => Gurdak 30, Miteo/Ware/Buca 10

And you've figured all of this out based on info from the staff? To base anyone's minutes on the time they've gotten in two October scrimmages is just guesswork. Pikes offensive system is pretty positionless. Regardless of where they play, the better players will see the most minutes. And it's possible that no one other than Francis will see more than 30 minutes.

If guys are producing in their natural roles, it will be less positionless like the NCAA years. The last few years were desperation to make anything work.

I didn’t say anyone would get 30 minutes did I? I said Buchanan will average at least 20. I’ll put my wager in on that right now.

I thought Francis played well at the 1 last year - was getting assists

wonderful if he, Lino and Davis split the 1 but Francis also will play the 2

He got assists but he not a great ball handler and the offense was so slow when he manned the point. He'd dribble for 20 seconds until his opening to go OR the right pass came up. He wasn't bad but it wasn't an entertaining watch.

You just described Knight's offensive philosophy. Waste 20 seconds and then wind up with a rushed shot. We've seen past teams do this just with more ball movement. Same results, lots of bad mid-range shots or rushed 3s.

True, in the past it was movement and ball distribution outside the arc for 20 secs

May I ask what Powers did to you ?

It seems like you take a shot at him every other post

Only in response to Bob and the other posters who routinely crows about the potential of guys with good shooting form who have not yet produced (obviously Powers sits at the top of that list, because he’s also weak on D).

The point is, he’d realistically be the competition to pull minutes from Buchanan who can swing to every position except the 1 and 5 (if Buchanan were to log below 20). Except the gap between the 2 of them right now on D is massive so Powers would need to do more than just hit a couple shots to chip into that time. It’s just where we are at right now. Smith has some defensive. Issues too and will probably have some variance in PT depending on match up too.

I’ll also add - Buchanan has nice potential to be a solid offensive contributor as a 4th/5th option in our system. He creates for himself nicely off the dribble strong side. Has no left - which makes him very easy to defend as one of the first scoring options on the floor. But it doesn’t seem like he’ll be in that position on this team. We’ve added guys in Smith and Gurdak at minimum who are scorers. Jones will hopefully have his moments too (let’s hope he can do more on offense overall than the Zrno types - defense clearly better). Sydnor a big question mark but even without him - Lino today is light years ahead of where Lino was at the start of last season. And even Tariq has a full year of high major experience under his belt now.

I'd argue it would be the Italian that would be the one person who could bring DB below 20 minutes. Powers isn't playing any 4 even if he were to suddenly start playing passable ball, and DB really isn't spending much time at the 2, so the minutes would come from the 3/4. I don't even know his name properly, so won't say it, but G showing some of the ability people were clamoring about over the summer would be the x factor that could limit DB. I don't expect it to happen and he'll be over 20 nightly.

Yeah - right now I don’t have Diego on my radar as he didn’t even check into the SJU game. That could obviously change, of course. I don’t think Buchanan will play the 2, but then, I’m not sure how much Powers will either because Tariq will get 30ish and Jones might get the rest. I think the overlap with them is at the 3.

Ive been saying this all summer, too many transfers, would have liked to paid more NIL to less players. Still think this team is better than last year, probably a .500 team or so. Gurdak was a steal though, can't believe we landed him.

Too many transfers or Euros? I’m actually happy with all 5 transfers we picked up.

Martin is thir head scratcher for me. I don’t get what we were thinking there. Could’ve taken a local walk on.

I love love Gurdak and he was probably the most NIL. Its not that I think the other 3 (taking out the other center for a second) are bad, I just think that you could have combined the NIL of those three and got a difference maker swing forward.

Maybe - but you could have the issue we might end up having with Sydnor with anyone - and then what? Sydnor was reportedly looking great in June. Then he suffered a high ankle sprain. It’s a really tough injury to recover from and even once you can return to sport it doesn’t mean you’ll be 100% for a while and some guys never get their full explosive speed back. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the problem with going all in on one guy. If Sydnor recovers we will compete. If not, it’ll be hard. We don’t have depth at the 4.

Yeah having several younger guys at the end of your bench that you can develop to build depth when you only brought in one HS recruit is a bad thing. 🤦‍♂️
