The D is an overrated myth ... PP blows more
Floyd is going back to Minneapolis for the foreseeable future. The No. 15 Hawks outgained Minnesota 288 to 209, held the Gophers to 72 rushing yards, and still lost 13-10 on a 46-yard field goal as time expired. How do you lose a game where your defense only gives up 209 yards? When your offense randys around with with boneheaded turnovers, a blocked punt, and a quarterback carousel with less talent than Drake's roster. Just like that, stubborn Kirk's refusal to recruit a portal QB in the offseason single handedly erases any realistic hope of making the playoffs.

Turnovers, Turnovers, Turnovers. The stats don’t lie. Iowa turned it over 5 times (3 interceptions, a lost fumble, and Watson's low IQ lining up offsides penalty after a huge goal line stop on 4th down). Minnesota’s defense was so busy catching Iowa passes it barely needed to tackle anybody. The most painful one came when Iowa was driving inside the Gopher 10 and threw a pick at the 2-yard line. That’s a minimum of 3 points left on the field in a game decided by 3.

The QB Carousel Hits Rock Bottom. As IowaLaw noted in the Midterm Report Card, Hecklinski’s numbers in limited duty were better than Brown’s. Well, staff took Law's advice and finally gave him the start. He responded going an embarrassing 9 of 16 for 62 yards and a horrific interception at the goal line. That’s 3.9 yards per attempt. Iowa doesn't have a QB controversy. It has an all too familiar QB crisis. Check Down Brown came in late in the second quarter and went 11 of 21 for 136 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs...but 94 of those yards were on two back to back passes that were all on the receivers run after catch. Combined, Iowa’s QBs threw for 198 yards, 1 TD and 3 picks. Seven games into the season, this staff still doesn’t know who its quarterback is. Neither do I.

Where Did the Running Game Go? Minnesota has the Big 10's eleventh ranked rush defense. Iowa came into this game leading the entire Big 10 at 6.09 yards per carry. That's a recipe for a great game, right? Nope. The Hawks had 30 carries for 90 yards, 3.0 per carry. Moulton, whom IowaLaw has said is overrated for the past two years, had 10 carries and averaged just 2.2 yards per carry before getting hurt. Phillips and Williams were better, averaging 3.6 yards per carry, but that just wasn't good enough. When your offense’s whole identity is the run game and it disappears in 50% of the games, you need a passing game to fall back on.

The Defense Deserved Better. Phil Parker’s crew did everything you can ask. Minnesota managed just 209 total yards and 2.06 yards per carry. Iowa had 3 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, and 5 three-and-outs. Deshaun Lee picked off a pass and returned it to the Gopher 21. The defense even stuffed Minnesota at the goal line in the third quarter...until Jaylen Watson's brilliant offside penalty gave the Gophers another shot, and Darius Taylor punched it in on 4th and goal out of the wildcat. That’s the only touchdown Minnesota scored all day. But I can’t give this group an A. After the offense finally tied it at 10 with 3:46 left, the defense gave up a 39-yard completion to Jalen Smith that set up the game-winning kick. One stop, and we’re in overtime.

Special Teams: No Longer the Gold Standard. Iowa’s first punt of the day was blocked, and Minnesota recovered at the Iowa 13. Iowa’s punts netted just 30.9 yrds per kick, and Minnesota returned 3 punts for 59 yards (19.7 a return). Evan James, who continues to show flashes of brilliance, fumbled another punt return that was wiped out only because Minnesota lined up in an illegal formation. There was a time when Iowa won games like this because of special teams. Today, special teams are a big reason why we lost.

Outcoached. The defense held Minnesota to 209 yards, so this one is on the offense and the staff. A low octane passing game that averaged 4 yards per attempt...and just one reception for our lone high dollar portal acquisition. A run game that vanished with zero adjustment and very little misdirection. Just 3 points from 2 red zone trips due to some horrible play calling. In its four Big 10 games, Iowa averages just 21 points per game (approaching Brian Ferentz territory). Hawk fans were told Lester is an offensive genius despite getting fired from his previous job and his super impressive 6 month stint as an NFL analyst. Instead, it’s de ja vu all over again.
Law you are the best on the board and you were skeptical of this team (as you should had been)
But .... The Defense Deserved Better. Phil Parker’s crew did everything you can ask. NO
PP allowed another crappy team to drive for the winning FG again! OVERRATED

So? Your point is we should be happy because others are having issues as well? Dumb.
Point is you could pay 5-10 million for a QB ( as others in the league have ) and they can still have a stinker of a game. ( Or a season plus in Underwood's case )

Yes! We have numerous examples in the Big 10 besides our own that going the free agency route at QB doesn't pay. The portal somehow has convinced people that development doesn't matter when you can pay to get what you need in the portal. We have a string of failures with portal QBs. Developing QBs from within fits the culture at Iowa and our NIL/revenue sharing situation.

To repeat what I wrote in another thread watch the way Ben does things in basketball. Especially considering the caliber of coach he has established himself as. He wants to build the program with high school recruiting first and use the portal to plug holes. Build a winning culture where players will develop and play high level basketball. We can do that in football too as things continue to evolve in this new landscape of college sports.

Not to state the obvious, but a couple things:

Finding random examples of under performing QBs to justify Kirk not even trying to bring in a portal QB after seeing what he had on the roster is lunacy. Just because Michigan's QB turned out to be overrated we shouldn't even try to improve our roster at the most important position on the team?

What about all the portal QBs who are absolutely thriving at their new schools to prove the counter-point? Oklahoma State brought in a portal QB from North Texas. He's throwing for 332 yards per game and has 20 touchdowns. We couldn't have competed for him? Oregon State brought in a portal QB from Mercer. He's throwing for 372 yards per game and 24 touchdowns. Oregon State has a bigger NIL program than us? Nah. Miami is riding Duke's QB to this year's #1 ranking while he's averaging 307 yards per game. Clearly there were high dollar and low dollar portal QBs out there who are tearing it up. Iowa just doesn't have the QB evaluators (Kirk has proven to be one of the worst in the business) to bring in difference makers. They honestly thought Brown was their guy. Anyone who has seen him play in games knows that was a HUGE miss.

As for the way Ben does things...it's too soon to tell, but to say he doesn't rely on the portal is revisionist thinking. Iowa's entire roster last year, minus Koch, were Missouri Valley & Robert Morris transfers. Long-term, that may change, but at least for last year Iowa's roster developed elsewhere then was plugged in to make a tourney run.

You forgot to mention all of the brilliant 2nd and long off-tackle play calls against 7 and 8-man fronts that netted zilch!

I should have written in my post that going the portal route doesn't always pay. We have to figure out what works best for us at Iowa. Up to this point going to the portal for QBs simply hasn't worked out. As a developmental program to begin with I would like to see us change course and develop the QBs we recruit out of high school.

In the bigger picture the Minnesota game showed regression in the offense. The playcalling seemed abysmal for the most part and that didn't start with this game. Not sure what to make of Lester and Kirk still seems intent on playing offense his way. The Lester hire may not ultimately work out very well for him or Kirk.

Well that is an interesting rejoinder
It's because he'll never come back and admit he was wrong, especially because it was me that exposed him.

He hasn't blocked me but he's been ignoring me for years because I call out his schtick every time. I honestly can't remember the last time he responded to one of my posts. 😉

In order to develop the QBs Iowa recruits out of high school, they would need to keep them around for more than a year or two.

Sullivan stayed when we brought in portal QBs to play ahead of him. If he and Bessinger both stay and compete in the spring then we have something to work with. And we have another QB coming in. I think it comes down to culture and giving these young QBs the opportunity to develop and compete for the starting position. Create a culture where QBs want to play at Iowa and earn their opportunity. You do that by getting away from cycling through QBs from the portal.

Ben plays (UP) to the level of his competition

JF does the opposite of that. Remember when JF lost to an FCS program in 2016. In the post-game he talked them up like losing was almost expected.

Our football program needs a Ben, not a guy whose program identity can be summed up with, "We're playing not to lose."

Along with 2023 @ Penn State that was the most pathetic effort I've seen from an Iowa team in recent memory.

Lester and Kirk had a year + to evaluate the QB situation and did nothing. Malpractice coming into the season without a real QB.

Wisconsin will shut us out on Saturday which is crazy after smoking them the last 4 years

Kirk's QBs do develop...unfortunately, they completely flunk out as QBs at any level and end up developing as tight ends at DII schools (like elite Budmyer recruits Marco Lainez, James Resar, et al.) =-0

Our defense was excellent, save the one offsides penalty. Our quarterbacks were shocking, absolutely shocking.

Only part I disagree with is Floyd being in Minneapolis for the “foreseeable future”. It took an absolute dumpster fire of a performance for them to win on a last second field goal at home. It’s nauseating how we gave this game away.
Iowa vs Minnesota is always a dumpster fire type game. Both lack talent at skilled positions. Ugly football.

Until another game winning final drive. Another late game choke job by Parker. That qb was worse than that gambling ISU pig farmer that drove 99 yds vs elite D at Kinnick to win the game.

I don’t think putting any type of blame on a defense that only gives up 13 points is fair.

Giving up 13 vs Ohio State is impressive. 13 to bad offense Minnesota is not. Allowing that final game winning drive was pathetic but predictable. Seen these choke jobs by Parker too many times.

They don't play again for another five years so it's going to be in Minnesota for a while no matter how good Minnesota will be.
Do you really think the Big Ten is going to not schedule Iowa-Minnesota? It’s is one of the premier trophy games in all of college football. We are stuck with Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin for the foreseeable future.

I respectfully disagree. 13 points is not a good output by ANY offense, and certainly consistent with a “bad” one.

If giving up 13 points to a “bad” Minnesota offense is a choke job, what is scoring only 10 points against a Minnesota defense that was shellacked by Purdue the game before?

Holding your opponent to 13 points should win you 90%+ of your games. You cannot expect the defense to hold every opponent under 10 points, every game. There are a myriad of reasons why Iowa lost. The defense is at the very bottom of that list.
