I’m not donating until we get a product that is actually fun to watch. Even when we win it’s usually a brutal watch. It’s the same reason I didn’t get season tickets this year after planning too for a while.

In summary I’ll donate when Kirk is gone. Until then I frankly don’t see a point, we will go 8-4 or 9-3 regardless of money. We will have the same strengths and the same weaknesses year after year.

I also put 0 stock into that Athletic article and suspect Iowa actually is in the middle of the B1G, or at least close to it, in spending. We have the lowest overall departure rate of all P4 programs since the start of NIL spending and unlimited transfers. We are not retaining players at that level with bottom of the barrel spending.

I have to reply to these solicitations to donate to young men, some in their teens, playing sports. I did this for many years with IClub donations and buying tickets from '73 to 2019 with seat donations etc. But some people like me are retired or dont have the money. And now these kids are getting paid from TV and other revenue with big $$$$$$$$$. I and my wife donate to needy causes and not paid players. Iowa gets many millions from TV revenue.

For all the praise Beth gets, what has she done for NIL ? I’m not impressed. The AD in this era is responsible for much of the fund raising and making ties to corporate sponsors.

I’m not willing to donate so that college football players can make more than I do. My charitable contributions go to the local food bank and other such organizations. If I lived close enough I would buy tickets, concessions, etc., like a traditional fan with modest means.

The Brewers have the 18th highest payroll in MLB and the Rays have the 28th.

Iowa is a small market/small budget team just like they are. It’s obviously an uphill battle, but the right coaches and general manager could certainly have Iowa competing with the big boys every once in a while. It’s really not a whole lot different than it was before NIL.

That’s why Iowa went younger and less heralded in the portal because it costs less plus retaining is cheaper and Iowa can develop them. Iowa has a very young but very talented roster. If they can retain most of the players and I’m thinking more NFL than anything, they are going to be very veteran and good next year. Youngest team in the B1G and I think Minn is 2nd or 3rd most vet? That makes a big difference.

They need to limit the transfer to a “one-time only exemption”. This would drive costs down and benefit Iowa more having a more stable program.

Thank you! The Dodgers and Mets have the highest payrolls in MLB. Where are they? Spending more doesn't guarantee anything.

Until college football implements a draft, I don't think MLB will be a good comparison. Everybody is a free agent every year in CFB

College sports are in a category of their own, distinct from even pro sports.
I would call it super-pro sports as no league in the world has total free agency all the time, which is college sports right now.

If the Brewers were operating under this system they would have lost miserowski, chorizo, Contreras 2 years ago

Brewers are smart, signing these guys very early to long term deals.
Money means more in college sports, cuz every winter you have to pay an ever-inflating price to try to retain your best players.

It's a business model where spending big money does not guarantee getting into layoffs but not being at a minimum of 20 million almost guarantees you won't get in

It's pro sports free agency on steroids.

I just told you I put 0 stock in the exact article you screenshotted that from. I’ve read it and in the article they say they are quite literally taking their best guess because they get a variety of different numbers across each program. I don’t believe it to be even close to accurate across the board.

There’s also no reference to cost of living in that article at all. Your dollar goes twice as far in Iowa City as it does in the SoCal schools for example. 20% farther than Minneapolis or Ann Arbor, etc. The article leaves a lot to be desired.

Actually Iowa is the most stable program right now. And most others are year to year.

The rule would just bring more stability to other programs. And narrow the gap in continuity advantages that Iowa currently has

Iowa is in great position with their program if they could just increase their nil budget, the AD needs to step it up. this last off season having the funds for a qb and a DL should have been doable.

It is only going to get worse. Iowa doesn't have any money, no chance they compete with these blue bloods and even Nebraska and Indiana and Minnesota! has more money than Iowa. It will get real ugly. Looks like the favorable conference schedule is going away too. Next year's schedule is tough. But fun home schedule finally.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with that type of mindset. The same thing was said to fans who wanted Fran gone. It was always “Who are you gonna get?”. The belief that it was almost a certainty that anyone else would do worse, and that no big name or good coach would ever come to Iowa. And what happened? We got one of the top young coaches in the country who accomplished more in his first season at Iowa than Fran ever did in his decades as a major college coach (and with a less overall level of talent).

It’s the Todd Lickliter Effect and it is still in the minds of many Hawk fans.

Am I calling for Kirk to be fired or retire? Absolutely not! I appreciate all he has done for the program. At some point in the not-too-distant future he will no longer be Iowa’s head football coach. Fans should not fear that day, or automatically assume things will be worse. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but to think there are no other coaches that could achieve the same yearly levels of success at Iowa is pure folly (and actually insulting to the University and program).

Adam Shada talked about Iowa's NIL on a podcast this week. Iowa's about 3 million short on getting a quality QB out of the portal.

Iowa would have had to not retain about 4 top players to pay that. Instead they went with paying WRs and RBs and gamble with what they had in the QB room.

Tony Diaz had 17 catches in his first 3 games and 11 in his 5 B10 games, with just 1 in the Minnesota game. He's on pace to have half the of his 67 receptions from last season. I don't see him coming back to this mess.

Playoff teams can have a portal QB ready to play over the spring/fall camps. Why can't Iowa. Even after a full year this is what we have.

Agreed. It is colossally stupid to donate money to college kids who are already pulling in 6- and 7-figure salaries.

College sports are already a multimillion-dollar business. If you want to pay the players, fine; but figure out a way to pay them out of the revenue that already exists. (And Iowa is not a poor program.)

Why? Because Iowa’s offense is complicated. Not my words, either. Portal QB’s can’t just step in and grasp it right away. They need time to learn it.

We have been hearing for YEARS (even before Lester), about how complicated Iowa’s offense is. And I always ask “If the offense is so complicated and difficult to grasp, why not make it simpler?”

In the old days, when you had players who stayed for 4 years, having a complicated offense wasn’t that big a deal. Players watched and learned for a couple of seasons, and were ready when their time came. But this isn’t the old days.

Who in the portal at QB could they realistically have gotten and then who would they have had to pass on?

Iowa decided to go with Diaz, James, Phillips instead of 1 QB, just guessing here but I bet that math would have worked out.

So who would they have went and got? Wisconsin pumped a lot more money in and got Colton Joseph but then who would he have thrown to? I think it worked out as well as possible with their limited funds.

Now then you look at Diaz and he has had a massive hand in every single game besides OSU. Again UW he had the whole defense following him and he's getting bracketed a lot of the times.

Iowa missed him quite a few times against Minn for sure, but I think with Brown in there they are going to start hitting those.

I don't see Diaz just splitting and he probably signed a 2 year contract anyways. He is playing in the B1G aka NFL minor leagues and he has room to develop and get better himself. Growing alongside Brown the next two years, next year sets up very well for the offense. I would like to see them go pass heavy to get a lot better at it and if there are some interceptions along the way, so be it. But the RB room is not healthy and Iowa needs to lean on their main playmakers which are now Diaz, DJV, RVZ, Ostrenga. Expect them to spread it around a bunch to the those 4 as the season progresses. Then you can take that improvement / game plan into bowl prep, spring ball, summer, fall.

Unless Iowa totally collapses and it's a complete lost season, I don't see Diaz bolting.

You can't expect to buy a new Cadillac for the price of a Yugo. Point is, Iowa's NIL = a 7 - 5 or 8 - 4 team record. Just get used to it unless you stop bitching and start writing checks.
No 17th place nil is 5-7 or 6-6. People who turn their nose up at 9 wins and 17th place nil are in for a rude awakening when KF retires.

Athletes don’t live in the dorms all 5 years. That’s a freshman year thing. They do in fact rent, buy gas, and buy groceries. We could also talk about student activities like the bars. The team will feed them most of their food but they’re still buying their own.

A little bit of math would tell you that a $400k check from Iowa would be exactly the same as $500k check from Minnesota. 500k is a pretty standard price for a starter at a non QB premium position.

I lived in a high COL area before moving back to Iowa. The difference is tremendous and if my kids agent ignored it I’d fire em.

Football is QUARTERBACK-DRIVEN these days. In the pros the SAME QBs go to the championship games, year after year, even tho the team around them changes drastically each year.

In college, QBs aren't around as long b/c of graduation. But make no mistake, a 'winning QB' is worth a handful and a half of other good/great players. All great teams have great QBs. I think it's all that's really held us back the last 5 years from being borderline 'elite'. It's why every BIG team that didn't have a great returning QB went to portal to get one (except us apparently)

Their living arrangements are paid,on campus or off. In addition to their room, board, tuition, and nil, they get a stipend of 3000/ month for pizza and movie tickets ect.
So you are saying that on top of that the col in minneapolis would take an additional 100k out their pockets annually to afford beers at the bar?

They are completely sheltered from col concerns, unless they are supporting family back home.

Iowa had a lot of needs not just QB on offense. Remember this offense was probably the worst since the early 80's not even that far back, 2023, compared to the rest of the B1G.

So, there were a lot of holes especially at WR. To get a top tier QB who is better than say Hank Brown or Heck, they probably would need to pony up 2-3 million and then who would he pass to?

What's the point of spending that much on a QB that can air it out when WRs can't get consistent separation?

They chose to go the young route with the resources they had. If they had the money to fill WR, back up RB, and QB, I am sure they would have tried to get a Colton Joseph or someone similar.

All this the same though, I still think Hank Brown can be a very good QB for Iowa and has shown he can win games.

Just look at Indiana vs. UM. Indiana probably has double the budget and needed OT to win that game. Iowa was able to win it with Hank Brown and the low budget roster.

The further play on this though is that Iowa is very young.

Brown - 4th year
Diaz - 3rd year
RVZ - 3rd year
DJV - 3rd year

If Iowa can retain all those players for next year, that is some continuity with talented players that Iowa hasn't had since Stanley days.

Now this year they could say they can retain those skill position players and drop $2 million on some super accurate G5 passer. Even then though, the step up to the B1G from there is higher than it's ever been and is no guarantee for success.

Everyone is talking about Wisconsin and rightfully so, the year isn't over yet but what if Iowa wins that game, then beats Nebby and NW and all these other schools that got transfer QBs in. Then it's clear the best decision was made to stay in house.

And if James didn't fumble that punt return or Wallace corralled that INT and Iowa wins 13-10 no one would be talking about it, they would be saying Iowa played their worst possible game and still beat a highly veteran Minnesota team on the road. We aren't in reality talking like Iowa is miles away from competing in the CFP. They are probably the rest of this season and a year of really hard work while keeping the skill players and Hank Brown from being a much better team.

For all the praise Beth gets, what has she done for NIL ? I’m not impressed. The AD in this era is responsible for much of the fund raising and making ties to corporate sponsors.
Fair question. From a numbers perspective, a school like University of Illinois definitely has a larger alumni base to work with though. Also, many of their alumni are very successful in the business world. Iowa has successful business alumni, but just not as many. Hopefully Beth can find a way though, otherwise the rich will just get richer especially with no salary cap like the NFL has which can (somewhat) even the playing field.😎
