Parity in the SEC has arrived and the big boys of football don't like it. Parity in basketball is also difficult to accept here by BBN, it seems, understandably. All playing surfaces are being leveled now. Are collegiate sports better for it, or not ?? It is hard to tell who the really good and exceptional teams are now ... but ... maybe there aren't any anymore ??? I don't really know ...

This is not quite correct. Playing surfaces WITHIN the power conferences are leveling.

But the difference between the power conferences and the mid-majors is doing exactly the opposite, it’s growing wider than ever before, simply because those conferences don’t have the financial resources to retain talent in the portal/NIL era.

What it means is we’ll see see a lot more of this “anybody can beat anybody “ parity when SEC and Big Ten teams play each other. But the days of the truly little guy upsetting a big guy appear headed toward extinction.

I should've said both, versus all, to say basketball and football are being leveled ... but YES ... the point you made about the power conferences versus others certainly seems to be spot on ... thanks for the reply.

Parity? Duke and UConn seem to be doing just fine versus the field in the area of parity. Kentucky basketball has no reason not to be great in this era.
I get your point, but do you think it is easier, more difficult, or about the same for KY to continuously stay on top in this NIL-Portal era ??
For myself, I do not know ... especially if UK desires to stay committed to BOTH basketball and football !!

Staying atop college basketball in the NIL and transfer portal era has become fundamentally harder for Kentucky in terms of competitive volatility, but easier in terms of financial leverage. The modern landscape has fundamentally altered roster construction. Whether this era favors or hinders a blue-blood giant like the University of Kentucky (UK) comes down to a clear set of trade-offs:

Why It Is Harder: The Loss of the "One-and-Done" Monopoly
    • Roster Volatility: Under John Calipari, Kentucky dominated by securing the top-ranked high school recruiting classes every year. Today, relying purely on five-star freshmen is a losing formula. Coaches must rebuild almost entirely from scratch annually using veteran transfers.
    • An Older, More Physical Game: Because of NIL, top-tier college players are turning down the NBA Draft or second-round projections because they can make more money staying in college. For example, 2026 saw the fewest NBA Draft early entrants since 2003. Freshmen are now forced to play against 23- and 24-year-old grown men, eliminating the raw talent advantage UK used to rely on.
    • Continuous Poaching: Retention is a constant battle. Mid-major stars transfer up, and rival schools can actively tamper with and recruit a program’s current roster using massive financial packages every single offseason.

Why It Is Easier: Unmatched Financial Muscle
    • Unrivaled Buying Power: If college basketball is now dictated by payroll, Kentucky is uniquely positioned to win. For the 2025–26 season, Kentucky's basketball roster payroll reached approximately $22 million, the highest mark nationally.
    • Institutional Advantages: Top-tier asking prices for elite portal players have reached up to $5 million. UK's official partnership with JMI Sports via BBN United secures their NIL management through 2040, ensuring a continuous, institutional pipeline of cash that 95% of other programs cannot match.
    • Revenue Sharing Dominance: As direct school-to-player revenue sharing has rolled out with caps around $20.5 million, Kentucky allocates an aggressive 25% to 30% of that entire athletic department pool strictly to men's basketball.

The Verdict

The floor has dropped, making it harder to guarantee a dominant season every year because any team can buy a veteran roster and catch fire. However, the ceiling remains arguably higher for Kentucky than anyone else; their deep-pocketed donor base and massive brand equity mean Mark Pope will always have the financial resources to buy a championship-caliber roster. The challenge is no longer just identifying talent — it is recruiting it and assembling a cohesive team out of mercenary pieces every 12 months.

Every top program is once coach away from turning the lights on. Those two are currently a length ahead because of a Saban-like coach and an uncanny ability to attract a bench+ of top talent.

They're not doing well at all in football. Now if you have another subject, take it to where it's appreciated. But it ain't here. Dam.
This was the original post.

Literally nothing I said was outside the parameters of the original discussion. Not gonna go back and forth with you, but your disrespectful remark was not only uncalled for but also inaccurate.

Hurley comparison to Saban? Ok fine. However, we just had a coach recruit just as good as Scheyer here at Kentucky. With our brand power, we should be capable of doing the same but it requires the right coach to do so. I don’t think that is our current coach’s strength which is fine. Sampson has been as good as anyone recently at Houston without having top 5 recruiting classes year in and year out. Regardless, having a coach that’s good enough to win at Kentucky should be the expectation. I still hope Pope can be that, but I’m not lowering expectations for anyone, whether in this era or any other.

Sampson definitely has a model that works. I'm curious to seeing how his team does this year, even moreso once he loses Tugler.
