My understanding is that doesn’t kick in until next year and Bo will get his 5. VTU has said he’ll get 5.
Per wrestling.insider.updates:

"it was clarified that the strict age-cutoff restrictions under the new rule will not be enforced for the Class of 2026 (they will officially kick in for the Class of 2027). As a result, Bassett is fully cleared to use all five years of his eligibility on the mat for the Virginia Tech Hokies."

I didn't realize Bassetts or VTU run wrestling.insider.updates.

Like him being there 5 years will actually be a thing.

I cannot find anything other than wrestling.insider that says this. Did they list the source?

That IG page just posts stuff that they see on the internet and isn’t reliable at all.

Age-Based Clock Start: Under the
NCAA Division I and II Age-Based Eligibility Rules, the five-year eligibility clock starts either upon full-time college enrollment or at the start of the academic year following the athlete's 19th birthday, whichever happens first.

Bo Bassett Birthday = August 25, 2006
Bo Bassett's 19th Birthday = August 25, 2025

Start of NCAA Academic year for eligibility is annually August 1st.

Start of academic year following Bo Bassett's 19th Birthday = August 1, 2026.

Bo Bassett full-time enrollment fall 2026.

Assume earlier of two is August 1st, 2026.

Conclusion: Bo Bassett has 5-years eligibility under 5-for-5 starting August 1, 2026. As such, he can compete through July 31, 2031. There will be 5 NCAA Championships in that wndow.

What insider information is required?

Ex post facto.

I believe he and others will be grandfathered in.

And that is why as Basch seemed to write "compliance departments" (not just one such as VTU) have been informed 5 to play 4 won't be strictly enforced for the 2026 class.

Anyways, per your link:

"The Eligibility Center plans to have information regarding the age-based rules in student accounts in early August."

It is late October. So both Bo and VTU should know.

I'd put Bo getting 5 years at about 98%....I'd actually be shocked if he didn't. Look how the NCAA is backtracking on Mendez and Levi. I also know someone who contacted both VTU and NCAA compliance (I've seen the emails) and while the NCAA wouldn't address Bo specifically, he created scenarios that basically fit Bo's situation and they basically said that arguments sake's scenario, the individual would be eligible for 5 this coming year.

Let's say he gets 5 and they grandfather in 2026. No doubt someone in 2027 class who's in the same situation is gonna say the rule was made in late June after HS graduation so I couldn't have graduated a year early. So I should get 5 as well

If we're being honest, I would have never done the 5 for 5 in the first place and I certainly wouldn't allow grey shirts with it. 4 years 1 RS, no BS Olympic RS, and tighten up the Med RS and we're good.

IMO if you can apply for AARP you are too old. 23 year old SRS is enough. Bo will be getting osteoporosis before he graduates.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. The rarest thing in wrestling is a true senior. The majority are 23-26 by the time they are done.
Maybe in the Covid years, but that was not the case 15 years ago and it should not be the case now. IMHO The 23 years olds seems reasonable, but 24 -26 seems silly. IMHO

Agreed 100%. And as it pertains to College Wrestling, they wrestle less than they ever have, and take more years doing it. All with the supposed advantages of modern medicine, training, nutrition, etc. It's ridiculous.

Yeah. you haven't been paying attention.

2 year holdbacks have been a thing since the early 2000s. Only got more common year after year. by 2010, you were at a disadvantage without at least one year hold back.

Agreed.

Anyone in a circumstance similar to Bo's, who is born in August 2006 will get 5 for 5. And I believed that is the crux of the reported "not uniformly enforcing the age for the 2026 class."

In Bo's case, enforcing the arbitrary 6 days of extra maturity, ex post facto, would easily be seen as arbitrary and capricious. Couple this with the risk of potential liability of a lost NIL earnings lawsuit, and it should be a no brainer, even for the NCAA lawyers.

Agreed, if they were born in August, because they were directly impacted by the change in date from August 1st to September 1st, and if they in fact could've graduated and enrolled early.

But there is no benefit to the NCAA announcing that at this point in time, unless someone raised the issue with them.

Virginia Tech's Fall 2026 semester classes officially commenced on August 24, 2026. Therefore, Bo Bassett would have enrolled before then. As such, his enrollment would have been before the new September 1st deadline (first in effect September 1, 2026). Thus, his enrollment date would meet the revised timeline, and he wouldn't be considered to be gray shirting while preserving competition year eligibility (one thing the rule prevents).

When Bo turned 19, the start of the next academic year was August 1st 2026. The later change to September 1st took effect in late June 2026, well after his actual 19th birthday. That would seem to make it immaterial in Bo's case, as it isn't stated as being retroactive to 2025 in the rule.

I don't see how he doesn't logically get 5 for 5.

So now it's a "disadvantage" if you can't compete with your own age group? Interesting. We had it so wrong for a couple centuries, what the hell were they thinking? Idiots! 😂

Semantics or not I don't see how Bo wont get 5 years or win in court for it because the NCAA just changed that and a judge would rule that certain kids like Bo didn't have enough time /grace period to adapt. So all the old holdback kids where parents gamed the system- are on notice to get that back on track.

I can see Bo or any kid winning in court they didnt have sufficient time to academically change and graduate early in the now. But a kid in 8 grade right now wont win argument down the road. Now where is that grace period to adapt set at 1 year 2?

Corby and 98 can argue all you want but this will be the end game of it.

I hope he gets 5 . But the way the rule currently reads he doesn't. Now Vatech claims they talked to the NCAA and he gets 5 years. The NCAA loves grey area and interpretations they could easily explain it but they won't

100% agree. I like the kid despite the whole Iowa thing and his parents. It's just a shame adults kept him from his dream of wearing a black singlet. The NCAA eventually will allow a grace period- even if its not currently written.

But all you sandbagging parents better figure your kids credits out because that loophole once written will close for future classes.

You know, you wrote alot, but never actually wrote whether you thought or knew Bo would get or not get 5 for 5.

You only write nothing the NCAA says...
Or
Only Bo and VTU say...

So what actually do you know?

September 1 could never logically apply to Bo. So why would I reference it? You quote the rule, as if it definitely applied. That's 🤡 👞s material, right there.

So you're confirming another person said it, who is neither a Bassett nor works for VTU? And someone from NCAA agreed in writing?

I don't see how that could even be possible when Corby mockingly wrote numerous times only Bassetts and VTU said it was so, and the NCAA never wrote that anywhere.
