They are going to be lasered in big time in all facets of the game. The running game needs to be fixed (duh) but maybe start passing first and then that will open up the run. Idk… I am puzzled how they can be so good one week then play like turds. No consistency whatsoever! They need to decide one QB, this is throwing off a lot of momentum and being benched totally FOOKS up the morale of these kids. Hank no leash Heck short leash… gotta give Heck the entire game not bench him. Heck is still the man, a higher reward but some costly mistakes but his upside is way better than Brown’s IMHO. Let’s get ready and boat race the Badgers … knock this aholes down a few notches- there’s going to be some very angry Hawkeyes this coming Saturday- time to put the pedal to the metal… and FOOK WISCONSIN!

Okay...great. We win out. Obviously that's better than any other scenario and is what we would all like to see.

But in the big picture, unless there is cataclysmic chaos above us, it's just a nice little season that, yes, ends with 10 wins, but also no playoff appearance, no conference championship shot, no true signature win, no precious pig in our trophy case, and yet another trip to the Norton VPN Anonymity Bowl.

Iowa had everything to play for, a bye week to get ready, and they looked worse than a Pop Warner team at its first practice. What is the excuse? Maybe Iowa needs a more experienced coaching staff. Maybe they need a new OC and a modern NFL-style Shanahan offense. Maybe they need better wide receivers. Well, the constant is Kirk Ferentz, winningest coach in Big Ten history. How does he fail to get his team ready to play? In back to back weeks we have these results:

Purdue 41
Minnesota 13

Minnesota 13
Iowa 10

Sure, there have been plenty of upsets this season, especially the last two weeks, but if you want to separate yourself from the pack and force your way into the CFP, losing to Minnesota--and looking like garbage doing it--is inexplicable. Those who fear Iowa football after KF need to get a grip. Let's try it and see what happens.

BTW: Where was all the misdirection yesterday? I don't remember much of it at all. The way the Minnesota defense was flying around, the misdirection would have come in pretty handy. Maybe Lester's saving it for Nebraska. And Iowa has several good TEs, but it doesn't seem like they're getting nearly as much out of them as they should. Lester and his Shanahan playbook failed yesterday, although to be fair the players screwed up some great opportunities by receivers dropping balls and QBs missing wide open receivers.

Whats it matter now as Iowa had a chance to stay in the playoff picture and wasted it all away with old Iowa offense and crap qb play and even worse playcalling, lets keep running right up the middle for no gains dont use any motion to at least make defense have to look whats going on.
We can still get back in playoff picture. Need to dominate the rest of the way though.

Iowa can just as easily lose out. Who the hell knows at this point?
At the risk of overstating the obvious, the truth as usual will probably be between the two extremes. Iowa will probably not win out OR lose out. I'm expecting another 8-4 type finish. Pretty typical stuff under KF. This team never felt like anything out of the ordinary to me.

If Iowa wins out and finishes with 2 losses, it would be a lot like 2023, when Iowa managed to get to 10-2 with Deacon. 10-2 looks good on the surface, but going into the Big 10 title game, Iowa was nowhere near the playoff picture because everyone knew Iowa was barely skating by against a soft schedule and had no marquee wins. This year would not be much different.

This is the problem. When the big game is no longer attainable, Iowa then plays loose and motivated. It is baffling.

Happens everywhere. Texas goes to #1, loses 2 games in a row to unranked teams (Oklahoma and Florida), goes home to play #7 Ole Miss, goes up 24-3, and hangs on to win by 7. Up and down nature of college football this year.

BYU ... beats ND, goes to #2, and then loses a nail biter to UCF.

Buckle up!

When you turn the ball over four times deep in Minnesota territory and let a punt get blocked, you aren’t going to win too many games. Add in missing a wide open Diaz for a td. Iowa should have scored 24 to 28 points but that’s football, ebb and flow.

Exactly. It’s the “fake i.d.” thing. And we’re waaaay too familiar with it.

Did you not see Heck totally underthrow Diaz for a TD in the 1st qtr, I mean by 10 yards and throw it a hair long when your guy has a step or more behind the defense. and I think that drive the hawks made it inside the 10 yard line and then a pick on a very questionable play call after LJ gained about 7 yards on 1st down iirc. Dont throw it into the middle, go play action and pass it out to the back corner or some safe area.

And did you see Heck totally miss Diaz on the post pattern in the 2nd qtr for a TD, that would have been enough to win the game.

And late in the 2nd qtr after the INT Heck forced it into double coverage with a safety standing on the endzone line in the middle of the field and it was and INT that wasnt.

I think Heck got benched/removed whatever for making some bad decisions and making bad throws to pretty open receivers. On his first INT he could have waited for Diaz to get two more steps behind the defense and put a little air under the ball.

Hank need to get rid of the ball earlier on that late 2nd qtr INT where he got sandwiched but we were already in FG range, not much time left, cant remember if we had timeouts or not but maybe a better, play call for 5 yards and some YAC. then kick the FG.

But right now I think Hank still has the better arm and makes better decisions overall. And I liked him pulling it out of the RBacks hands and dashing 13 yards with the ball to beat them overpursuing.

The OLine, we need to get out of these up the middle runs when the defense is shooting a Lbkr or 2 on most plays and bringing a safety to about 5 yards of the LOS.

104th in yards / pass completion
101st in time of possession
75th total offense

Iowa has played 5 P4 teams. They are 3-2. One is good (Ohio State). The others are mediocre to bad. The Hawks played well against just one of them (Washington).

There are 5 games left. At this point Wisconsin and Northwestern appear to be better. Iowa would appear to be better than Purdue, and slightly better than Illinois. I would guess about even with Nebraska (but can’t really tell for sure right now).

Sure, 10-2 is possible. Would love to see it, but I feel it’s highly unlikely.

I also think losing out is highly unlikely.

Unless the offensive line starts blocking better, and QB play improves, we’re probably looking at 7-5, 8-4.

I am not trying to be negative, just realistic.
