Great win but qb has to improve

That was minchey's best game yet, even though his stats are pedestrian. He started taking more of the calculated risks i mentioned weeks ago. The 4th quarter td to Willie is a great example. Before this game, he throws that short for a respectable gain and we maybe fizzle out.

The only bad play, and it was bad, was not recognizing the numbers on that late 4th quarter sack when we went for it on 4th. If you're going empty, qb has to slide that protection left AND understand the extra defender is on the qb. He did neither and we were dead in the water.

I believe it’s time for ole @bigblueinsanity (the real) to give us his weekly Sunday update on all the things Minchey did wrong.

Or have you finally thrown in the towel?

Guess what - minchey indeed elevated his play since my op and it shows. He had two really good throws: 1) deep to darby 2) under pressure to miller.

That said, our offensive struggles the first two series were all minchey. Both possessions he missed willie in the middle of the field for big games. Also on the play where baxter got hurt, minchey had willie and Barnes wide open much deeper.

The one really bad decision was trying to force it in to miller (iirc) down the seam into single high while he had willie open again. Very, very lucky to not get picked.

Again, at the time of the op it was accurate and we're all seeing him grow. He's finally starting to take the deeper routes when they're open instead of constantly taking the short option.

Dude, just show some humility and admit you’ve been wrong. And contrary to how you’re making it sound, Minchey did not just recently “elevate”, he’s been excellent nearly all season, you just refused to give him credit for it.

First let’s recap some history: Months ago you were the guy telling us how Boley was better than Minchey. And once the season began, you were the guy running here after every game to criticize Minchey and tell us all he did wrong. To the point where it plainly appeared as if you have some sort of agenda against the kid.

Now let’s update with the season mostly over: Boley was awful, got benched, and has now lost his job and is riding the bench. Meanwhile Minchey has been tremendous and is leading us to one of the greatest seasons in UK history.

I think it might be time to say something along the lines of “Wow, was I ever wrong!”

Now give equal time to each good play/decision he made last night as you have to the poor/bad ones here.

I literally did exactly that. I continuously point out things where he does well. I just point out his misses too. Casual fans, especially if you aren't at the games, dont see how many opportunities we missed this season on easy defender reads.

The real issue is fans dont understand nuance and that's why I get so much hate in this thread.

The truth is the strength of our offensive units is 1) OL 2) TE 3) wr 4) qb 5) rb. Of that group, qb had the most room for improvement. He has improved, but still has more room to grow.

I'm not a casual fan because I'm not at the games. I was a 42 seasons season ticket holder who drove 90 minutes each way. My partners all crapped out for various reasons so I stopped.

You did not go thru positives like you went thru four negative points. We had 65 plays from scrimmage. Name five good ones. That's all I ask.

My main positive on Minchey. His poise. Never seen anything like it. 2 bad drives. That’s ok. Doesn’t affect him. He’ll rip your heart out on the third. Always calm, cool and collected. Exudes confidence across the whole team.

I think he’s gotten better on his run/don’t run decisions. I think he’s gotten better But could still improve his field vision but I think that will continue to improve.

Back to the poise and confidence. You can’t teach that and not sure you can put a price on what that does for the whole team.

It is really impressive. He really does embrace the one play at a time and does not let past events dictate the moment. Focused.

Field vision is his final boss. Everything else has elevated.

This offense is so easy for a qb. Every route concept either has someone schemed wide open or gives the qb a one defender read. The latter is where minchey still has lots of meat on the bone. He likes to throw short when the intermediate or deep is the right read.

Yes, the poise is unreal right now and yes, it cannot be taught. I also want to give credit to the line for holding up well on his drop backs, but even then, he stood in there and took some huge hits to drive the ball down the field.

He even showed some emotion on the TD he had at the goal line. He is making the most of it being a starter finally. Glad Stein could flip him from Nebraska. What a find in the portal.
