Hank looked better overall. The arm difference is apparent.

Hecklinski is like a PG who can't shoot 3's and is a liability on defense.

Brown is like a slow power forward who does everything average.

Take your pick...

Hecklinski = Brock Harding?
Brown = Guy Rucker?

I can see it.

Heck will transfer for sure. Hank would have to play shockingly well the rest of the season to stay QB1 next season, so chances are he’ll be gone, too. Makes perfect sense for JSully and Bess to split time for the rest of season, which is why it won’t happen.

Where is he going to go, maybe a MAC school? I love the kids moxie but he has a weak arm and his ball flutters quite often.

The pass up the sideline to TD was woefully short, and the post that was well overthrown was far from a tight spiral. His pick hit the LB between the numbers as we are at least in position to get 3; he needed to be yanked.

Unfortunately, the other QB was just as bad. I’m guessing they stick with Hank because he, at the very least, has the ability to throw a much better ball than Heck.

Arguing about who should start is kinda funny…give whoever you want the start and yank them at half if they can’t get it done.

Neither is a starting B1G Qb, but here we are.

Unless someone comes up with $3M to $5M, everyone needs to stop whining about our QB's.
Why is it that 60 or so of the other P4 teams somehow have the $ for a quality QB but Iowa somehow doesn’t? Iowa doesn’t need to buy Julian Sayin, Darian Mensah or CJ Carr. Absolutely no reason why Wisconsin, NW, Neb and UCLA should have QB’s who play at a much higher level than Iowa’s.

They spent their money on Diaz and Tyler Brown and a bunch of long term prospects rather than a 1 year rental like Gronowski. I’m not sure we can afford a decent portal QB and address our other needs. They were banking on Lester being able to make JH or HB being above average.

I guess I didn’t realize that all those other teams were only spending money on a QB and didn’t put NIL money anywhere else. Strange.

Exactly - if Sullivan or Bessinger has shown any ability to be a good QB you start playing them now. No point in wasting 2 more years with either Heck or Hank

This season is done anyway. One of Hank or Heck will transfer next year too. Let those other guys get their feet wet and play for the future
If either of them have any ability to be a potential starter they better transfer. Under this regime they’ll be ruined before they get an opportunity. Never seen so many qb’s look like ***.

Yes, he made some terrible passes and fumbled 3 times...plus all the penalties he was responsible for. He's never going to learn to lineup behind the LOS...
Maybe throw on 2nd and 10 once in a while. He put them in a terrible position at 3rd and longs all day. Kept running it into a brick wall. He was predictable today which made it easy for Minnesota.

Heck got 5 drives. The first drive I’m not faulting him for. Second drive he looked good until the pick which was bad. Third drive not good, missed Diaz deep on 1st down. Fourth drive he was ok but missed Diaz again. Fifth drive I don’t fault him because of the penalties and all we tried to do was run.

Brown got 8 drives. First drive was ok, horrible attempt to Buie to end it. Second drive was the atrocious pick, not good. Third drive not good, he did have the 13yd run though. Fourth drive not good, did get the PI on third on the poorly thrown ball to extend drive. Fifth drive not good, fumble recovered by Phillips, BJ fumble ended drive. Sixth drive not good, RVZ bobble to pick, not Brown fault. Seventh drive pretty good, huge thanks to Diaz. Eighth drive not good, missed wide open DJV.

Heck had 2 bad drives and got yanked. Brown opened with 5 consecutive bad drives and nothing to see here in Kirk’s eyes.

But then look at the QB play at Indiana and Michigan. It's just as bad, if not worse. Hell, Indiana didn't complete ONE pass in the entire second half today . . . except in OT. There seem to be lots of bad QBs this year, at least in the BIG.
Good point…your thoughts on why that is?

KF has proven over and over and over again ... if a guy starts game 1 of the season, he's cemented in at QB1 unless injured.

Once Heck gave him reason to, Hank is now back to QB1 again until the end of the season - or another injury.
If that’s the case (which I unfortunately think will occur) then it’s time for basketball season.

Sweet 3rd down pass by Hank to a wide open DJV.

I’m telling you, terrible quarterback play is why Iowa can’t be a legitimate top 15 team.
Yeah that was either very bad or Hank thought DJV was going to flatten out the route or DJV was running faster than he was because it wasnt close. I think he tried to guide the pass and failed.

Meh.

it’s splitting hairs IMO.
"its splitting hairs"? Now go back and read your first post. Said this after the Washington game when everyone was hyped up on Heck. We punished them in the run game and Heck had all day to throw to wide open receivers. What did it look like today? For the life of me I don't see the evidence that he's any better then Brown under pressure. In this game Brown gets credited with 2 interceptions. The first was actually a sack and the ball was knocked out of his hand and into the arms of a defender. The 2nd was a good pass to RVZ across the middle and he alligator armed it and bounced into the arms of a gopher player.

Hank Brown is just flat out terrible. At least Hecklinski is ok and has shown the ability to have great games. But we all knew this was never a competition. Kirk always wanted Brown so Brown is what it’s gonna be. Hecklinski passed Brown last year, but it was the backup job so Kirk didn’t care who was higher on depth chart. Then we all saw the kids day scrimmage. Amazing how every time that Brown is “better” than Hecklinski it’s behind closed doors.
Have you actually watched the games? Please explain Hecks ability to have great games. Your talking about ONE game. We kicked Washington around because we ran the ball up their As- all night. Then when we ran play action, (because they couldn't stop the run) we had guys WIDE open on all three TD;s. I highly doubt the outcome would have been much different in Seattle regardless who started. Today Heck started and did not have the benefit of the run game as a crutch. How did that look? Passes knocked down. Missing Dias on an easy pitch and catch TD. Really bad decision across the middle on the interception inside the 5yd line. I just don't see where this dividing line is that people think he's played any better against good competition. I honestly don't care which one plays , but I don't see the seperation people keep claiming.

Well, sure, except for all the other penalties, fumbles, Hank's INT, and a dozen other things.
Hanks first Int was a sack basically where he was hit from behind and the ball fell forward. The 2nd was a really good pass across the middle to RVZ who dropped the ball right in both hands. Yes, all the fumbles just can't happen. Even one less, and we probably win a game we had no business winning.

The majority opinion on here is that neither QB is P4 starter caliber. Again. Gronowski has been the only serviceable QB Iowa has had since 2019 and he played well about half of one season.

Neither quarterback is good, but Hank Brown is not better than Heck. But for whatever reason only being injured will sideline Brown. Heck has to be lights out or he doesn’t even get a half.

There’s still plenty of football ahead this season and as I type this Iowa could pull this game out of their azz if the offense can do something, but let’s be perfectly honest here: Heck has gotten the shaft while Brown has been given all sorts of unmerited latitude despite not being any good and also turning over the football.

Yeah, I am tired of quarterback play being trash at Iowa. Sigh.

Yup. Once KF declares a starter, he is for life (unless serious injury or graduation). Been this way for over a quarter-century. Matters not how good the backups are.
Guys!

Hank was healthy. And Heck started.

What on earth are you talking about?

Hank was better than Heck today? That’s news to me.

Edit to add I think prior to Diaz breaking 18 tackles after catching the ball 3 yards past the LOS I believe Brown was 7/15 for 27 yards and 3 TOs.
You mean the pick where he got sacked and the ball was knocked out or the good throw for a first down that RVZ dropped that was intercepted?

How has Heck gotten the shaft?

An open competition into the season is a fair as it gets.

Brown won the job.

Then Heck kept the job when Hank was healthy

Oh, and Tim Lester calling plays like Iowa is up two scores in the 4th quarter is also head scratching.

Games like today tempt me to hope the Kirk Ferentz era ends sooner than later. Just so boring and predictable. Sigh.
I would certainly hope this is an overreaction.

Hoping a HOF career ends sooner than later. 🤣 You can't make this **** up

I think the commonly held belief that the backup quarterback is often so much better is a myth. Neither current Iowa quarterback is great. I just don’t understand why Heck has such a short leash but Hank can suck azz and still keep getting trotted out there. Outside of two passes, he was actually worse IMO. Splitting hairs, but still. I think Heck has more upside to move the offense and score points while Hank has a very low ceiling as a game manager.

Either way, it just sucks and I am so tired of garbage quarterback play at Iowa.
You've seen Heck play ONE full game against a team we dominated who could not stop a run game, so the play action game was WIDE open the whole game. Based off that alone we're convinced he's the best option, and the coaches have no idea what they're doing. Okay then....

This is beyond stupid.

There was literally an open qb competition into the season. Almost never happens.

If KF always wanted Brown, why didn't he name him starter in camp? Why didn't he name him starter today?
