How many nationally ranked teams has independent Notre Dame played? They play no conference games.

Yes and no. While an ACC member for all other sports (minus hockey), the independent football team is required to play a handful of ACC teams every year.

The problem is the rankings aren’t entirely based on performance.

How does a 24 team playoff reward failure? The teams have to actually play games on the field. The NC team will have to defeat several of the best teams in the country. This is much more competitive and fair than a bunch of opinion makers deciding who the “best” 2 or 4 teams are to compete for the championship.

GS had no such guts…GEOGRAPHY dictated that schedule. It had literally nothing to do with chop boy

Same for SEC and B1G. They only want their own teams in the 24.

Based on the current released rankings Boise is ranked 21 so they would be the top non P4 team. Northwestern is currently 24 and would be in and face 9th ranked UCLA. It just so happens NW doesn’t face UCLA this regular season so it wouldn’t be a rematch. Rematches should be avoided if at all possible in at least the first two rounds of the 24 team playoff IMHO. They could simply slide teams up or down one spot to ensure a “fresh” matchup instead of having 3 loss SEC or BIG teams play each other again.

Yes. I just want to eliminate rematches within conference. A 3 loss BIG or SEC team very well may be able to run the table in the CFP.
Boise would be the lone non-P-4 representative currently unless the new format provides for additional guarantees to non-P4 teams (doesn’t seem likely to me).
Another interesting wrinkle is if the BIG and SEC start playing more non-conference games during the regular season so non-conference rematches in the CFP would become very possible.
