Chances of Bassett leaving VT?

Now that Bo Bassett got eliminated in the first round of U23 worlds, do we expect him to leave VT? I just thought I would start a "what if" thread for the heck of it.
Who beat him?
Yes, that’s clearly what I said. Real Woods is THE best wrestler in the world. Ever.
I thought they were talking about national title contenders. And Real was that.

Reading comprehension isn’t always the strength of HR. One poster suggested that the reason for Bo’s HS dominance was his age and it was stipulated that now he’ll be competing against wrestlers his own age and strength. I pointed out that he looked pretty good beating an NCAA finalist 2Xs earlier this summer. Somehow that was translated to mean that I think Woods is the best wrestler in the world. 🫤 To be fair Woods did win bronze at the 2025 World Championships. Summary- Despite losing a match at the U23 World championships a few months after graduating HS, I STILL think Bo will be elite in college.

Bo lost that match due to aggression and situational awareness. He’ll learn from it. Also, he is going to Seniors so if they are trying to peak him, that would be the one they would do it for. Keep in mind that he had to make weight for the Real match, quick U23 turnaround, and now on to Seniors. That’s rough for anybody.

Right now, he has some pretty good partners in the room. The only real reason to leave VT would be $$. Bo is going to be just fine.
AZ chief is back? 🥸

Two things can be true: Bo was old for high school, and he's also dominating at age level AND winning at senior level right now against people much older than him. We don't have to be dishonest about it because we don't like how it was handled.
Agreed. FWIW, while I don't consider myself a Bo "hater", I also don't think I will be rooting for him in the NCAA. Nevertheless, his flame out at U23's notwithstanding, he is having a lot of success v. other elite wrestlers at a Sr. level.

At this point, he is exceeding my thoughts on how well he would do v. non-HS competition. I would be surprised though if he lasts 4 or 5 years at any college. But, what do I know? That's just my opinion.

should have been in college 2 years ago...
That’s debatable. It’s not at all unusual for parents to hold off sending their kid who just turned 5 to kindergarten. It may even be a lot more beneficial to wait a year. Holding them back another year after doing that is a bit different though.

We can safely say he should have been in college a year ago.

Agreed. The kindergarten cutoff in my area is the child needs to be 5 before September 1. It's VERY common for kids with summer birthdays, especially August birthdays to wait another year to start kindergarten. It's often recommended by preschool and kindergarten teachers. As for the extra hold-back year in 8th grade, not so much.

I agree. I thought Bo would be good, but would plateau a bit, and that Melvin would exceed him. Bo is right now better than I thought he would ever be. If he keeps improving....

Bo Bassett is a great wrestler and nobody can take that away from him. But, freestyle and folk are very different. Bo will dominate but let’s see how he does against great top wrestlers.

Let’s not kid ourselves, unless he suffers serious injuries, conservatively this kid is a 4X AA with a couple finals appearances.

Let’s be real, if he was wearing an Iowa singlet we would say he was a sure fire 5x’er NCAA champ.

No matter the singlet or results, no one can say he isn’t a lot of fun to watch, though.

he was the recruiting win Iowa needed and then lost. I think its more significant than most fans want to admit. Time will tell how his career pans out, but losing him was a massive loss for the program IMO.

Bassett is a beast in folk. What his match last year where he majored Jaxon Joy.

As a Hawk fan, if still with the team, I would be talking him up like crazy. Im as interested in watching him wrestle as Messinbrink, only if wrestling a Hawk or Natty finals, rest of the time could care less.

Joy is a solid wrestler, but also didn't AA last year. Wouldnt say 49 was a stacked weight class by any means either. 49 this year compared to last

149 last year was probably the weakest and this year it's the best . I don't ever remember a weight going from worst to first in 1 season
Correct, my point exactly. I don't think Joy and Bo are on the same level by any means in Folk or Free. I would expect Bo to dominate. Will be interesting to see how Joy does this year with how deep 49 is. I don't see him AA again, I don't see him being a 4 seed?? I believe he was last year if he wrestled in the Big10 all year.

He was the #2 seed . He's probably a 6-12 guy this year. The blood round at 149 will be insane match ups. Valencia Vega Henson Van ness are probably the only 4 that are locks to AA

Right couldn't remember for sure. Yes, I would put him in the 8-16 type guy with 6th being his ceiling. Bigger question is, who does Cornell wrestle this year? will he go into NCCA's again with 1-2 losses and NCCA be forced to give him a high seed??

Don't forget about Mendez. If they do get their 5th year, he has stated he will be going 49 this year. Unfortunately, what does this do to block/Williams and their AA potential as well.

If Block gets on a roll and hits a gift seeded Joy in the quarters.

Joy beat Block 10-3 at NCAAs. Joy was up by 7 points in the 3rd period against National Champ Valencia before gassing out. Joy had 4 or 5 wins over AAs last year. Bad ncaas though

I’ve complained about this to my parents for years. I had a late August b-day and was always super young for my grade. I started college at 17 and my parents had to sign a permission slip. I remember going back to my wrestling room the year after I graduated to coach and felt so much stronger than I did as a senior. Lots of parents have figured it out. Plenty of 15 1/2 year-old freshman out there.
