Several schools dealing with issues late in the year due to injuries, discipline, and kids quitting due to JV season being over. The league only had 3 JV teams and those schools have had to call up several of those kids and not play JV the balance of the year. Then the JV kids that are just blocking dummies until the teams lose in the playoffs start dropping off or quitting the team. Sad part is in today's society we have many parents that promote quitting because little Johnny is not getting on the field and they are tired of picking their kid up from practice or going to the games.

Are you saying he quit?

What I've heard some schools start doing is implementing a policy saying that if you quit a sport during the season you cannot start going to workouts or practice until the sport you quit is done playing. For example, if you quit the football team you can't start wrestling or basketball workouts until the football team either loses out or wins the state championship. The schools doing it say its helping keep kids from quitting but also hurts numbers at the beginning of the year because the kids who would quit won't play football at all. Double edged sword I guess.

Yes, that is a policy in many districts. The problem with kids quitting is the lack of JV teams in 1A/2A right now and schools not being able to find games. The JV kids stop playing by week 5-6 and are blocking dummies. The parents or the kids quit on the varsity team. It gets hard at small schools with 20-30 guys total when they start quitting or not showing up. Makes it hard to do 11-11 drills and other practice sessions.

Week 10 and lots of RPI and Playoff seeds on the line. Current Standings C Central 9-0/5-0, WS Prep 5-4/4-1, S Davidson 6-3/3-2, S Stokes 5-4/3-2, Bishop 3-7/2-4, CPLA 2-7/1-4, N Stokes 0-9/0-5. Two big games this week with playoff seeding and RPI importance.

CC vs. SD- CC 9-0 comes in undefeated with a close win over S Stokes last week to stay unbeaten 20-19. CC has locked a minimum share of the conference title. SD is 6-3 and looking to gain in the RPI currently a 6-7 seed in the West. CC throws the ball all over the place and scores lots of points. SD is a pound and ground team that will mix in the pass. This one will likely come down to special teams and defense.

SS vs. WSP- This one is huge for both teams for conference finish and playoff seeds. WSP can finish 5-1 in the league and secure a winning season with the win. Prep is currently a 5 seed so they will want to move up or hold that spot with a win. SS is also looking for that 6th win and a winning season. A win will boost them in the seeding. SS has a solid run game and a hard to stop QB. WSP is fast and makes big plays so it should be a good game.

CPLA vs. N Stokes- CPLA got a big win last week defeating Bishop. NS gave SD a tough game falling short 28-22. NS has a real good QB and WR combo that are hard to stop. CPLA has good size and speed so it is a tail of two different teams.

Bishop vs. Bye- BM struggling right now awaits a first round matchup in the playoffs and will be traveling.

If I'm a coach of another sport and one of my players quit their current sport to come to tryouts/practice, I wouldn't want them on my team. If you can easily quit on your team for one sport, you'll do it again.

The RB from SS was back on the field last week. Not sure what happened but he was playing.

Honestly, I can see both sides of this. Schools like Porter Ridge already have policies that prevent athletes from quitting one sport to immediately jump into another. I understand the goal: commitment, accountability, and teaching kids not to walk away when things get difficult. But there’s another side to it. If a kid knows quitting football means missing the entire wrestling or basketball season, he might never try football in the first place. Now you've lost an athlete before the season even starts.

I think the key is teaching commitment without closing doors. There should be accountability, but there should also be room for legitimate circumstances. The goal should be to build well rounded athletes, not just keep a roster full.

You're talking about 16 schools that make it to the championship game in football, all the other schools/players aren't missing out the whole season because they played football. Sure they may get a later start, but they should already be in decent shape. Not to mention, most schools that have a decent amount of their players still playing football will reschedule basketball games (assuming they are against decent teams).

As a player on a team, if you quit one sport to come play, I'm already thinking you're going to quit on me. Take care of your commitment and come join afterwards. The door isn't closed.

If you truly wanted to fix it, have a 10 week football season (play 9 with a bye or play 10 and no bye) and a total of only 4 rounds of playoffs. We don't need all these losing teams in the playoffs. Top 16 teams in each classification is still 25% or more as classifications max out at 64 schools but most have 60 or less currently. This allows football to finish up earlier and players to not miss out on winter sports.

NCHSAA would lose a lot of funds going to a 16 team playoff. I could see that in 1A/8A since there are not that many schools. Take the top 16 by record and the others do not make it. Take 32 in the other divisions and that would make the postseason a bit shorter. Kids should stay the course and not quit to go to another sport. If so, they should not be able to start until the season ends of the team they quit. Different with JV teams as they may not have a 10 game schedule and may be done at week 7-8.

I understand the money aspect of it, but at the same time, how much money would they really be losing out on? Half of the first and probably a fourth of the second round games, aren't good anymore. With almost all of the teams making the playoffs, you see a lot of blowouts or teams that have already played each other in the first round.

Based on the handbook,
  • 0-75 miles one way, for the away team gets $270 for food.
  • 76-149 miles, $270 for food and .75 per mile.
  • 150 miles and up, the away team gets $360 for motel costs if they stay.
Officials for playoffs are $110 - $128 per official depending on round, with rounds 1 & 2 having teams of 5 and rounds 3+ having 7 (I believe that is the correct round it increases).

After those expenses are NCHSAA then gets a percentage of net gate sales.
  • 15% for rounds 1 & 2
  • 20% for round 3
  • 25% for round 4
  • 33% for regional games.
I can only image that some of those first round games are losing money for the schools. I could potentially agree on 32 teams per classification, but if you went to 16 teams, you could charge an extra $1 per round (I know, no one wants to pay more, but you would also be going to less games) and increase the percentage (a point or two) per round and NCHSAA would still make plenty of money. With some of these smaller/weaker schools barely funding teams as it is, some of these far 1st and 2nd round games, in which most of these teams don't even belong in, are killing the boosters and will eventually not have support.

If SD and SS both lose tonight, SD will be 3rd as they beat SS head to head. CC has already wrapped up the league title. I think the CC-SD and SS-WSP games will be close. SS and WSP were both ahead with minutes to go against CC and lost it late. SD is a fumble and FG from being 9-0/8-1. Great games to finish the regular season.

Wow, in looking at the playoff schedule, the state shows “South Davidson Middle and High School”. Do you know why “middle school” is included in that?

That was a battle for sure. SD was driving late in the game down 35-28 and threw a pick six to secure the W for CC 42-28. SD and WSP gave them all they wanted for sure. CC QB, RB and WR are very good players. The CC defense may be their downfall in the playoffs as they can be scored on by good offenses. They will have to outscore teams to win later in the playoffs. Best wishes to all the teams in the 1A/2A playoffs. Could be a 3rd round matchup with CC and WSP to go to the region finals. SD with a first round win first, then gets to travel to Robbinsville again for the 2nd year in a row to face the Black Knights and that vaunted offense and defense. Congrats to SD Coach House, staff and players on the schools second straight winning record in school history and top six seed playoff opportunity. Congrats to CC for making school history at 10-0 and winning the conference title. The league has some good teams entering the playoffs so we will see how far they can all make it.

By chance did you with the WSP game they struggled in? Was a very well officiated game.
Not sure which game you are referring to. If the CC game, WSP was driving tied with CC late in the game and threw a pick that ended up a score for CC a few plays later to lose the game. WSP/CC should be a really good game in round 3 if WSP can beat E Columbus.

How did winless North stokes only lose by six pts to South Davidson? Is this conference good or they just don't play anyone good?

Combo of issues including season ending injuries to three key starters, TE/DE, Center and TB/OLB, a very young defense that starts 10 JV age kids and the QB and WR #12 from NS are dang good players. NS spreads it all over place and throws the ball downfield moving the chains. SD is a pound and ground offense that might pass the ball 5-6 times a game on play action and boot. As for the league, it is much better this year with CC, SD, SS and WSP all having winning seasons. The other teams you cannot sit on or they will surprise you, especially CPLA as they are athletic and big.
