They miss out on the best kids because they attend private schools and the parents don't want them at a state school. I lived in northern NJ for over 10 years and I couldn't believe how the local people talked down on Rutgers. NJ people typically look at Rutgers as a below average university it's weird.
This.

Trying to tell these jamokes.

They have plenty for NIL. Knox is getting stupid money.

Rutgers is just being nice to Goody. But the natives are getting restless. When they make the play for JB, it's going to be big. Rutgers biggest problem is that the private school parents REFUSE to send their kids to Rutgers. Maybe JB can change that, but that's going to be his biggest hurdle.
They can't field a consistently competitive football team in the Big Ten. That doesn't generate confidence about improving their wrestling team.

Knox that's it? lol... No one else is being paid on the team. Common, College athletics is cutthroat, if they have a chance to improve most colleges do. Especially when the current staff is showing zero promise

Who else on the roster could command any money nitwit? You literally have no idea what you're talking about. About ANYTHING.

Rutgers HAS money. They have money for NIL. Period. Is the wrong coach there? Yup. but that's on the administration, and you clearly have no idea how college athletics outside of Football/Basketball work.

Colleges want to know 2 things. Are your kids graduating, are they staying out of trouble? Look no further than Oklahoma State and Iowa. John was never getting fired, Brands will never be fired and neither will Goodale.

Hell, even Penn State - Cael had to convince the PSU guys he was serious. And that Ira money wasn't coming until Cael was on deck. Winning national championships in an Olympic sport is just not high on the priority list for any AD. They appreciate it, but that's not what will keep them in the job. Look no further than Pat Kraft. He's going to be gone in 2 years if football doesn't turn it around.

Given the state of the program??? What's brands lowest finish ever in the NCCA torny? He puts a top 5 team in the country on the mat every year. And I 100% disagree on the JB statement. If he wanted the Rutgers job, they would let go of the coach and hire him. You don't have to wait till a coach's contract runs out, especially when that coach hasn't produced anything. Rutgers doesn't get the elite kids from their area due to lack of NIL.
This program USED TO BE ELITE. We constantly hear dual/duel meets dont matter. Well a loss to Minnesota last year and having some head scratchers doesn’t help recruiting. If top 5 is all you want Iowa is right where it belongs. If Iowa misses JB because he’s not from Iowa they deserve what they get. Will he be a great coach? Idk did we think Cael or DT would be? What Iowa has not wont get them over the hump.

Without Richisons $ DT isn't in Stillwater. Without Ira and his $ Cael isn't at Penn st . Iowa isn't gonna pay 1 million dollars for a wrestling coach so donors would need to . Tom will make 800k in 28-29. DT will be close to 1.2 then. So donors would need 400-500k year to supplement Burroughs contract
Screw you and your negotiating for salary with a potential coach. You have no idea what it would take so shut your pie hole..

Stop stating for fact what JB would need to come to Iowa. That’s ******* stupid, dude.
Wow! Who pissed in your cheerios this morning? Not sure he said anything that isn't pretty accurate.
We have no idea what it would take to get him to Iowa.

If anyone can change that it would be a multi time Olympic and world champion from New Jersey. These big name coaches are pulling kids from all over the country not bc of what college they coach at but bc of the opportunity to wrestle for them. You think Oklahoma State in Stillwater Oklahoma Is where parents dream to send their kids? Of course not. The university and even location is far less important than the head coach.

Correct. It would literally take JB, and even then, i'm not sure it would happen.

Exactly, you think David Taylor was originally coming to Ames, Iowa for the library?

Not sure what the debate is here... If Rutgers or Iowa talk to JB he is going to go where the resources are in place to be successful on an elite level. Just thinking its based on his salary alone is being naive. It's a part of the equation but certainly not the end all. That was my point in housing and cost of living. Rutgers offering say $200k more in salary alone may not actually be more in the total compensation of everything figured in. Rutgers may be short in facilities, bonuses, housing, NIL and on & on.

But what scares me is if both Iowa & Rutgers are close in all regards- the decider for me if I was JB is NJ is home and sadly NJ/NY is probably a better recruiting to be based out of other than Iowa.

The next Iowa coach needs to be able to get everyone they want from a bordering state. esp IL and still pull nationally

That ain't the problem. It's top ten guys. period. And you need to be able to sell them that they can win FS medals as well.

Rutgers has the money? Did you pick up your finance skill when you were wrestling at Iowa? The athletic department finances their are terrible. Can they afford coaches sure, but since joining the Big Ten they have lost 500 million.

Not what I'm saying at all. JB IS the solution. For both Iowa or Rutgers. DT doesn't have a single NJ private school kid on the roster.
What I'm saying is Jordan is not the surefire solution that David Taylor was. David Taylor was a lock to make Oklahoma State better and top level competitive. Not sure if Jordan fits that bill. You think he is, so more power to you. And by the way, looks like Taylor is doing very good at Okie State without those private school New Jersey kids.

Were there a bunch of people vocal that David Taylor would not turn Oklahoma State around? I seem to remember everybody raving about the hiring from day one. That's why we all have opinions..

I don’t think Beth would never fire Tom. She definitely has the moxy to make a move if she feels a better option is out there, just not sure on her commitment to wrestling yet. She’s different than Barta.

JB is every bit the coaching prospect DT was and there is an argument he’s a better coaching prospect.

Glad you think that, especially if there's any chance he goes to Iowa at some point. I still think Taylor was a no-brainer 100% sure thing. I'm still not sold on Burroughs being the difference maker DT was. Taylor has proven it, JB not yet. If ever..

Serious question.. let’s say they get 4th or 5th and have a handful of AAs like normal. Will tom consider retiring after this season?
Oh no, another team trophy in the current climate of “super teams,” guess I better hang it up.

getting 4th or 5th now is not what it was 10 years ago. These teams are stacked, you need 10 AA to be in the conversation. Not too long ago, that was unheard of… now there are multiple teams with the possibility of 10 AA, multiple champs, etc.

Cornell got 2nd a few years back with like 72 points. Now 72 points is not even top like 8 lol.

its a different time guys…

His contract goes until 2029. He'd be walking away from at least $1.5MM. I can see the university pushing him out and paying him a year's severance or whatever it is before I can see him leaving voluntarily. But what do I know?

Multiple teams? Based on current rankings PSU has about a 12% chance of 10 AA's. The next closest is OSU with >1%. VTech and Ohio State check in at 0.0004%. Its a little early to declare multiple teams.

I didn’t hear that. He mentioned the necessary pay to get him onboard? Sorry to all involved if so…
You’re good brother. This discussion has been all over the place so can’t fault someone for missing parts and pieces. I think JB would be a huge get when/if TNT step down but like others have implied, I don’t think he’s a guarantee. I think DT was the ultimate get with guys like JB, Dake, etc., an exceptional 2nd option…again, when/if TNT call it a day. I’m just ready for the season!! :)

Poor VHS is never going to hear the end WRT wrestling at Iowa. Some of you guys need to let that go. He brings exceptional insight and discussions to this board regardless of that one misstep.
