While the WNBA requires all team personal to stand in a dignified manner during the playing of OUR national anthem, they are given an out because the league allows them to leave the floor, so as not to be present for the playing. This is a league "supposedly" with an image problem, and yet both teams leave the floor for the playing, while fans stand as a salute to OUR anthem. Lets get on the leagues biggest stage, and make a political statement. Super. Well done ladies

I think even more than a political statement, it's doubling down on a self imposed narrative of being an oppressed group and all that goes with it. God forbid they ever get that massive boulder off of their shoulders and stop blaming others for any shortcomings they may have.

Maybe they should all play in China or Russia. Personally I don't watch them. If the league folds, I wouldn't be sad. I haven't watched the NBA for years also. Sports and politics don't mix.
You think the NBA is the only league that feels that way? And guys like you crack me up. Go move to China or Russia. Sure thing. While our current President continues to actually help the Russians.

They should be present and respectful of the National Anthem. The other Professional Leagues require that. If the WNBA is indeed a Professional League, wouldn't it make sense to do the same? I would say yes. If they choose to not participate, it only cements that idea that the league is an autonomous and "Narrative-Driven" Organization.

Very simply it's a league where the management is truly subservient to the rank and file.

Personally, I just think about all the men and women who are in the stands or watching on TV who have served OUR country so that these players have the right to not support the anthem. And yet in the next breath these players and their league complain about lack of support and recognition.

Ever been to either country? I have done business in both. I have traveled to over 40 countries and was always glad to return home and grateful to be an Amercan. Those that don't like it can get the hell out. They don't know how good they have it.
Is it perfect, no. But it is a damn sight better than anyplace I've been.

Well maybe they feel our President shouldn't be aiding the Russians right now.

I highly doubt what is transpiring globally or economically is even on their radar. Why don't you change your name to the Big Zed and move to Canada where socialized healthcare sucks, long waits for specialized care and the system has been swamped by too many immigrnants. Not to mention unemployment double the US, inflation much worse than the US, and weakening of their dollar. Oh, by the way, I was an expat for five years so I have a good idea what their socialized government is all about. Cheers mate!

Why in Gods name do we need to always bring the POTUS into these discussions. THIS thread has nothing to do with him. Please don't go down the path of the Duke. One of those is more than enough.

Oh sure. Rhyne Howard and Angel both played for team USA in the World Cup this summer and stood for the anthem during the gold medal ceremony. Maybe they're both a couple of phonies and not intelligent, astute political observers.

You started the thread about the good old USA and respecting the flag. That immediately invokes politics which if you’re upset about that but heaven forbid our President aligning with Russia doesn’t bother you I don’t know what to tell you. Is what it is brother.

It had to do with WNBA teams and the leagues OWN rules, which they follow , WHEN they want, and ignore when they don't. I had no intention of it being specifically political. My bad for adding this thread if it has to lead to more taking sides on what the president does, or does not do. I'll try to do better and only comment on things the group as a whole agrees with.

Great, and that's YOUR opinion. Maybe some others who have served have a differing view, or is it only okay to not care? And remember this is a league who bitches constantly about lack of support form the average fan.

Yeah them not being on the court for the anthem is totally the reason why the "average" *cough* white *cough* fan doesn't support them.

Better yet, why don’t people stop playing the anthem every five minutes??? Before every event, often every game…

I go to the CA state hoops championships every year, two sextets of games, two days in a row. Have to stand for the bleeping anthem TWELVE times in two days.

Whatever foibles this country of ours has or has had, under numerous administrations, doesn't detract from the freedoms I enjoy every day. I was proud to serve this country, and I served under two administrations, one Republican, and one Democrat. Made no difference to me then or now. I love my country regardless of who is leading it. I have never protested the National Anthem, and I never will. If you don't like whoever is in office, then vote.

Honestly, I apologize for starting this thread. For thinking as Americans we should still be proud to live here and support the flag. Just another mistake made by someone whose made a great many in 67+ years. I don't care who the POTUS is. Trump, Biden. Obama, whomever. It was never meant to support one side of anyone's political beliefs, but just to say I think these players are doing themselves a disservice and being disrespectful. Obviously they and many others here disagree.
