This was posted prior and is largely wrong
ND would have missed the playoffs 9 times since 2000 for starters

Not a huge Wetzel fan, but an interesting take on the impact of the larger playoff
Agreed. Don't care for Wetzel, but he makes some interesting observations/points.

This would make much more sense. I've said for some time that the B1G and SEC need to work together, not compete, to make a new sports league, led by football, that is divorced from the NCAA.

The thing about all the "big boys" leaving is that, if they all leave, the schedule would be absolutely brutal. Great for TV, but it would be worse than the NFL. Imagine a 12-game schedule for Penn State including Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Tennessee, USC, UCLA, and Texas. (Don't know what the other 4 teams might be offhand, but that's enough.) Instead, keep the B1G and SEC intact, so you have the Rutgers, Vanderbilts, and similar teams to give a breather.

Now this is logical and also good for the sport IMO
What happens to the B12? Where all PSU's players are from? Also, I would think something will happen w/ FSU and Clemson sooner rather than later, and I would lean toward them joining the B1G.

If you have member schools in Cali and WA/OR, you can have them in SC and FL as well.

I don’t think this will necessarily have a negative impact on the regular season. I assume top 8 ranked teams will have a first round bye. Teams 9-16 will host teams 17-24 in reverse order for round one. The top 8 will host the winners of round one in reverse order for round two. They then will move into an 8 team playoff hosted at bowl sites. The teams in the top eight would only need four wins and host one to win NC. The second 8 would need to win 5 with one at home, the second at a higher rated school and then three bowl games. Teams from the bottom eight would need to win five games with none at home. I would guess that most of the time the NC would come from the top eight, occasionally from the middle eight and rarely from the bottom eight. So where you rank will have a huge impact on your chances of winning the NC.

Those that add value join major conferences...the majority form the second level of the top tier.
I don't think Clemson or FSU have a ton of value to be honest but we'll see. All depends on the end game. Agreed. If you can have a team in Washington then you can in Texas or Florida

They have been doing just that. (One of the reasons they are pushing so hard for the mis-named "Save College Sports Act" bit)

Step 1 is to kill off al the other conferences - which is well on its way to being completed (they will continue to "incorporate" a few other programs into their fold.

Step 2 - Then they start bouncing/reducing payouts to the weak sisters in the existing Big Ten and SEC (a lot of them in the Big Ten, not so many in the SEC)

Step 3 - And then, no matter what labels you attach to it, you have a group (30? 40?) of programs that - in the minds of these powers-that-be - control all the meaningful piles of $$$.

That is the plan anyway. Whether it will work? Shorter term? Probably Longer-term? Highly questionable, especially given the make up of the roster of "powers-that-be".

Be interesting to see what 31-70 do when they are pushed out, and how you maintain a 24 team playoff with 40 teams
It would become 2 tiers...both having 12 teams...add one extra game for ESPN and gives those teams a legit shot at contending unlike now when it's going to be SEC/B10/ND 19 times put of 20

A super league would have to be more than 30 teams if there are 24 playoff spots. 50 to 60 teams maybe?
Create a D2 league for the rest. As with many pro soccer leagues, bottom 3-5 teams in D1 get relegated to D2. Top D2 teams get promoted.

The way we’re playing, we’ll be left out. And that’s just fine. Let PSU focus on other endeavors.

😞
Remember when the BWICAC Insisted that PSU was a top 5-10 program when in reality it was a top 10 -15 program? Now we hope to be top 25? Gotta love excellence at the highest level

They need to scrap this 24 team playoff and go to an NFL system. Pick the top 36 schools and divide into 2 leagues or conferences. Everyone is independent and a stand alone program/franchise. Then you break out into divisions that are geographically based.

How do you pick the top 36? Get beanheads to figure out some algorithm based on average home attendance, football revenue and win losses over the the last 10 years. Then some committee inserts some judgement into it to make sure it makes sense.

Here's a stab:

From the B10
OSU
PSU
Mich
Indiana
Oregon
Nebraska
USC
UCLA
Washington
Wisconsin
Illinois
Minnesota
MSU
Iowa

From the SEC
Bama
Texas
Auburn
Oklahoma
Florida
Tenn
Georgia
Kentucky
Ole Miss
LSU
Texas A&M

From Big 12
Utah
BYU
Texas Tech
Arizona State
Colorado
Houston

From the ACC
Miami
FSU
Clemson
SMU

Independent
ND

What happens to everyone else? They still play but not at the highest level with the top 36 teams.

Two conferences and three divisions of six in each conference.

Obviously there could be debate about the last 4 in and first 4 out kind of thing but these 36 teams are a good pool of programs.

This is probably similar to what will happen only all the SEC and Big Ten teams will be included and it will likely be closer to 48 teams. 4 divisions of 12...top 4 in each division make the playoff. 11 division games and week one is what becomes of the bowls and we have kickoff classics like Texas vs Ohio State or Penn State vs Georgia.

Right, because this season is not an anomaly and this will be the state of PSU football forever going forward.

If only we would have kept Used Car Salesman Jesus and not fired him, then the Mike Tomlin of college football could have gotten us to a first round 24 team playoff exit every year.

I like your list. Add South Carolina and scrap Colorado. Michigan State is on the bubble but who would replace them? Okie State? Vanderbilt and Arkansas, you're out. I don't know what the right number of teams are but 36 seems about right. We only want teams with the resources and willingness to be competitive. No Colorado Rockies type teams bumping along at the bottom year after year. And we're not letting teams in because of tradition or they are in a good media market. Get some wins or you are replaced with one or non-36 teams wanting to give it a go.

And one more thing, all games are played with other teams in this super league. No more padding your record with Ball State type teams.

The solution to these dilemmas is a system of promotion and relegation, similar to European Soccer. Also, to make that work, longer term contracts with players are needed.

Unfortunately ND will never be forced to join a conference with the expansion. They will always get in unless they have 4 losses or more. Heck, they may even get in with 4 since they are MFN ND. 😡

If I was made czar of college football about 5-7 years ago and I made it my mission to completely ruin the sport, I couldn't have done a better job than what has actually happened these last 5-7 years.
I agree but what is done is done and there is no going back. It used to be my favorite spectator sport but now it's down there somewhere. My father is in his 80's and he is to the point where watching sports on TV is one of the few things he can do so I pay attention to Penn State just to talk to him about it.

Don’t see that many teams even breaking even unless someone puts limits and enforcement on pay. The top 10-15 will continue to find ways to spend more
